Ferrari Testarossa - Test drive and Review of an 80s icon.

  • The Ferrari Testarossa was released in 1984 as the successor to the Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer. While the BB was a hit with consiumers it had some issues that the Testarossa was able to overcome such as the cabin overheating. The Ferrari Testarossa was designed by Pininfarina and produced from 1984 to 1991 until it was replaced by the 512 TR and then the 512 M. In total there were almost 10,000 cars produced, (including the 512 TR and M) making it one of the most mass-produced Ferraris.
    All versions of the Ferrari Testarossa came with rear-mounted 12 cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. The rear mid-engine design (engine between the axles but behind the cabin) kept the center of gravity in the middle of the car, which increased the stability and cornering capabilities of the car, making the driving experience much like that of a high powered go kart. The original Testarossa was reintroduced as the Ferrari 512 TR (TR standing for TestaRossa), at the Los Angeles Auto Show, as a completely new car. in 1994 the Ferrari F512 M was introduced at the 1994 Paris Auto Show. The car dropped the TR initials and added the M which in Italian stood for modificata and was the very last version of the Testarossa. The Testarossa was replaced in 1996 by the front-engined 550 Maranello.

    I bought mine and actually asked NOT to have the “engine out” service done. I was able to get the dealer to knock it down by $15,000, and had my guy, that I trust a lot more, do it for around $8000. So in essence I saved $7000, and had the peace of mind to actually watch my guy do the full engine out service.

    The Testarossa, Countach, and Porsche 911 Turbo pretty much ruled the 80s. Every other kid in my town had a poster of at least one of them alongside their Def Leppard and Kathy Ireland posters. When Miami Vice introduced the white Testarossa after blowing up the McBurnie Daytona replica, I was instantly hooked by its gorgeous and unique lines.

    One forgotten fact: The very early Testarossa (the flying mirror with central nut wheels) is the only one of the US-versions what has come with the original Euro dashboard (miles counter in the middle console; no horizontal bar under the dashboard) and without the annoying seat-belt thing. And they have the most "true" horsepower.

    My mechanic has a nice collection of cars, one of which is an 80's Testarossa (he's also got an 84 Porche 911 twin turbo & an 86 928S). I've ridden in it a couple of times. When I got my C5 Corvette the first thing it reminded me of was the ride of that 80's Testarossa. The C5 has a similar weight distribution due to its transverse mounted trans and the rear end is wider than the front end like the Testarossa which cases gives you amazing cornering capability.

    One of my poster cars as a teenager,along with the Countach.My first Testarossa I ever saw was in a london showroom it was metallic black,it looked great,even now they don't look dated,thank you for pointing out where the door handle was,I remembered watching Clive James struggling to open the door of a hired Testarossa years ago and i often thought how do you open the door.Anyway on a non serious note Dont listen to what people are saying about your jeans,they look great.Keep up with the great videos.

    These runner seatbelts were never used as a convenience. They were a loop hole in regulations! In the late 80s /early 90s, cars had the option of either having these "automatic" seatbelts or airbags. This was the easier solution for most cars at the time I guess.

    The custom fit luggage option was not only for the front but fit behind the seats as well. This car was on my wall and i told myself i would put it in my garage. I have owned and have many cars but for me , my TR just can't be matched for the overall impact on the senses. All the little quirks is what makes the TR. Put some exhaust with updated rims/tires and wow. They dont make them like the 80's / early 90's anymore ( F40, 328, TR, 512TR, Countach, Diablo, throw in the mondial convertible) Right there you have 4 Poster cars of like 2 decades (or more). Saw a smartass comment below, love you're channel and you are doing awesome. I need to come down i live close to Newport/Del mar . Ace video! In relation to the single mirror early version or the monospecchio apparently it was Ferrari who misinterpreted the DOT laws and thought the single mirror was a way of complying! Once they had realised the mistake they went back to a standard 2 mirror set up!

    Doesn't it sound great! The engine layout is in fact identical to the Boxer, both having the flat twelve on top of the gearbox. The TR just moved the radiator(s) to the rear, giving it the big hips, but avoiding having the coolant pipes running under the cabin floor and acting as you say like a Roman hypocaust. FYI, I know it's an American accent thing but the way you are saying Testarossa actually means 'Pink head' in Italian. Roso/rosa, with the 'o' like in rose, nose, pose etc means pink. Rosso/rossa as in possum, boss, cossack etc is the adjective that means red.

    • @buioso
      @buioso 2 роки тому +2

      Italian here
      Testarossa means exactly "Red head". Rosso is red in italian, rossa is declined for feminine as "testa" (head) is a feminine noun.
      Pink is "rosa", and you don't decline it for different nouns. Feminine or masculine is always "rosa", there is no "roso".

    Hey I dont know how I never saw this video until today🤔
    The Testarossa was a car I owned for a very short time. Like many others i loved the style and mystique of this car, loved Miami vice to😎
    It was always a special experience driving it, my only issue with it was that the auxiliary belt snapped and it was a read tight sod to change because the space at the front of the engine is so tight.
    One quirky quirk was the lock button being in front of the driver on the door as opposed to the rear on the door🤔
    But it's a thumbs up from me, as is the video👍

    The side rakes also foil air in to the radiators, as well as add down force since they also ramp up like the rear quarter panels ramp up above the wheels. Which is why they never needed a rear wing spoiler. Though the 1957 Testarossa was beautiful ( Like You only because its awesome you know more about it than i do) Enzo Ferrari told 1957 Jaguar XKSS is the most beautiful car ever made. Tetsaroza! Oh dear. You don’t have to go full Italian or anything, but if you’re going to make a video about a car, please don’t get its name completely wrong. Hard to take anything after that seriously.

    2:15 Having a rear mid-engine car does not give it a low center of gravity. In fact, having the engine on top of the transmission gives it a higher center of gravity. A problem for the Testarossa.

      Having a dry sump, makes it possible to place the engine lower. This also takes away turbulence under the car in high speed. The car is totally flat under :-)

    If you grew up in the 80's that car would be a Ferrari 308 GTS and Testarossa.

    Still having the engine above the gearbox gave it a relatively high centre of gravity. Great video though 👌

    Wait til guys who grew up in the 80s hit their 50s. Then these babies will shoot up in value again. This car’s core market is still too young to afford it - for now.

    It's not when you grew up in the Nineties but Eighties because this car was introduced in 1984. And although the Testarossa was popularized by the series Miami Vice (Enzo gave a white Testarossa to Don Johnson), kids had a poster on the wall of a Lamborghini Countach not the Testarossa.

    • @FerrarisOnline
      @FerrarisOnline  3 роки тому +2

      Well i had the poster. Im 90s kid sooo...
      Also testarossa were produced from 84 to 91 and the 512 tr and m from 92 to 96.

      @@FerrarisOnline Haha, maybe a poster from your dad... Those posters come on for sale and in folding form in to magazines during the introduction of the particular model not ten years later or so. I had a poster from a Ferrari 312 T2, Kenny Roberts (Yamaha motor racing World Champion) and a Countach. The Countach was so much more outrageous than the Testarossa and therefore much more popular with teenage kids.

    The flying mirror car is on the '86s only.

    • @FerrarisOnline
      @FerrarisOnline  2 роки тому +1

      The early Testarossas were fitted with the famous single high mirror, also known as the "flying mirror". The strange location of this mirror was related to a European law regarding the external rear view mirror, which was interpreted by the designer as the need of having 100% rearward visibility. As this simply was an incorrect interpretation of the law, Ferrari later decided (also after many complaints about the single high mirror) to use double low mirrors, first shown on the Geneva show in 1986. The first cars having double low mirrors were s/n 67079 for Euro versions and s/n 67487 for US versions (first US car with Model Year 1987).
      Please note that there are also early Testarossas with double high mirrors or with double low mirrors.
      In both cases, this was NOT original and done by the dealers or by the owners.

    I was non plussed when it came out. I preferred the 512 BB for it's purity of purpose. I experienced a fellow with one about to need the cam belt service. He started it every weekend, Sunday at about 7am. After a few months I decided the car was fantastic. I suggested he sell his Viper, Corvette, and airplane and go ahead and service his Ferrari....I think he sold the TR, sadly.
