This is *very* inspired by the video game Caves of Qud. The names of many of the Cybernetics, psychic glimmer/gleam, and the stat change from CHA to EGO come from that game. I've been wanting a tabletop version of that game for a while now -- this is the closest thing I've seen, and very cool.
I don’t know where to find it exactly but someone does have a caves of qud adaptation to knave. It’s called “Knaves of Qud” I might be able to see if I can find it.
I have maybe half a dozen rulebooks like Vaarn that I will probably never get to play, but just buy because they're like tiny art projects that are fun to read. I love books like this that have interesting presentations to go along with the content.
It gives me an 80s sci-fi fantasy feel, like the Taarna story from the Heavy Metal movie, and the mutants from Vampire Hunter D. The alzabo is straight out of Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series.
It's so funny to me how BotNS is totally obscure in a pop-culture sense, yet creators reference it on a semi-regular basis and pretty much everyone who didn't hate reading it considers ot one of the best works of speculative fiction ever.
I totally thought this was a reference to Might&Magic 1, with that game being set in a medieval fantasy land that's later revealed to be a science-fantasy outer space arcology, called VARN.
5:28 Man, these monsters are great! I especially love the horror of the green guard; A Plastic skinned robot fighting endless Wars, like little green armymen, come to life
I play and run a lot of Numenera, so this theme is appealing. The weather hex is brilliant. I don't think I've ever seen one before. I may have to pick this up, simply for all the tables and inspiration. It really looks great!
This is one of the best ttrpg books I have ever bought. Page after page, table after table, of some really inspiring stuff. Get it before it runs out, cause you KNOW it's gonna run out! Edit: Oh dang, the had already sold out when I posted this! Hope the do another printing, a lot more people deserve this book!
I LOOOVE science fantasy settings and this looks like a gorgeous product; getting real difficult to resist buying yet another OSR book that I don't have time to use 😭 Edit: I gave in and went to Games Omnivorous to buy it and ended up also buying Skullfungus' Isle of Ixx 😅🤣
This is a super cool setting book. Love all the options for players, the easy-generated content (especially the overworld focus), and the evocative art. Super cool that it's a spinoff of Knave, it must be a very satisfying feeling to see that as the creator. What are some other books like this
I still love The Principia Apocrypha under Lithyscaphe. And I really wish there was more Steven Lumpkin. From West Marches to Weird Stories... the Dude Exudes. Mr. Lumpkin, where are you? Please come back again, and again ..
This sounds like a fun world to mess around in. If anything at all, the pure volume of tables will be excellent additions to my solo RPG games. I'm also getting ideas to adapt them to my Five Parsecs from Home and Kill Team campaigns. The more gonzo alien the better!
I’ve been watching this creator for a few weeks, and I’m very impressed with their work! Check out their blog, it has a lot of supplementary material to use alongside this book
@@antiantifa886 Sounds like a lot of great stuff: Dark Sun meets Fallout meets a bit of Nausicaä (the backstory with the Titans). It's so brilliant and inspired!
Because there are bleeding hearts that think using the word "race" is racist. Likely they're the same people who want to eliminate half-orcs and half-elves in D&D for the same reason. 🙄

Glad I stumbled across Vaults of Vaarn last month and ordered it then. It seems everything your review sells out immediately!

Amen to that. I've wanted to translate Qud to tabletop for ages.

Yeah it's weird it wasn't mentioned.
@@TowelBoyCSGO Wow just checked Knaves of Qud out and it looks rad!
I was going to mention that, but you beat me to it. How Qud you?

Thank you for the kind words on the graphic design, Ben.

To anyone who sees this and is interested: Check the entries to the vaarn jam on itchio from summer 2022 for more potential content in this setting.
Just bought this purely based on your review.
Check out Vaarn zine 3 for a few extra classes

Im just getting around to watching the video 4-days after it dropped and the book is SOLD OUT! Great review Ben, I’ll be watching for this.

I bought VoV because of this video it seems super fun. Also I backed Knave 2e, keep up the awesome work.
I remember commenting about this a few days ago! Doubt you covered it because of me but I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves.
Mine arrived last week and I love it, so much flavour and a really high quality product. Can't wait to put it to good use!
Thanks for highlighting this one, it is really cool and full of interesting and quirky tables and options!
Ordered VoV from Exalted Funeral last week when they restocked. Can't wait to get my copy!
Aw, this look awesome!!
I absolutely love stuff like this that organically grew out of a home campaign!!!!
THIS is the content people need to be making!!
Looks dope! The alzabo is straight out of Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun.
I have the first Vaarn zine, had no idea about this special collection, that's so badass
Yeeeeees been waiting for this review love this book and setting !!!
Bought this based off your review. It's amazing, well worth the price.
This looks great. Especially since my home setting is also a “dying earth” type.
This is my favorite setting by far. I love the Cacklemaw tribes.
Love me some awesome alternative settings - This is a great review and showcase.
Oooo. Excited about this giveaway. 🤞

Vaarn looks amazing! Totally cool.
Love the Book of the New Sun inspiration in this (like Troika! had).
There’s a similar rule set called Knaves of Qud. Both vaults of vaarn and knaves of Qud
Statted for Knave? That’s amazing!

Original Gamma World and Metamorphosis Alpha look down the long years with pride

Sounds amazing! Please stop reviewing things I didn't know I needed! Haha 😄 very dying earth, love it.
Very cool looking book!
I feel this would be a great asset if you're going to build out a electrum archive campaign.
Reminds me of Adventure Time mixed with Fallout. Very epic!
Sounds like Gamma World.

Had no idea this was a knave hack and setting. Maybe if I don't win I'll buy a copy!
... I ordered it just yesterday... lucky me 😅😅😅
Knave 2: Knave Harder.
Knave 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Oh please oh please fingers crossed to be the chosen one lol 😂
It looks like it could fit pretty well with mutant crawl classics from Goodman games as well as gamma world
Check out Unearthed Vaarncarna if you enjoy this
Gene Wolfe!
Looks like the author was a fan of Might and Magic 6
I love this channel but it's bad for my wallet and my shelves

Science fantasy ala dying earth is just better fantasy.
