    Thank you. Bought it. Read it. Using it and loving it. I've decided that Hubris is where murder hobos go when they die. But I can't tell if Hubris is Murder Hobo Heaven or Murder Hobo Hell.

    I absolutely love giving each wizards spellbook its own traits and personality. Having that many spells collected together should definitely warp and change the book thats holding them.

    This seems like a setting that would be at home in the pages of Heavy Metal magazine (or in the movie). I get a distinctly over-the-top pulp science fantasy feel. It sounds like it could be a LOT of fun. Like you’d want to play classic rock type songs as a soundtrack.

    So THAT'S what those dice are for. I found a set a long time ago with a d3, a d5, a d7, a d16, a d24, and a d30. I've found uses for the d3 plenty of times, but I've never used any of the others.

    This looks amazing! Thanks for your wonderful reviews and videos. Love Maze Rats!
    Anyone notice around 09:51, page 244, the D6: Games/Music table lists "Hootenanny"? That's hilarious and is the kind of thing that really makes me want to get this book.

    This looks really interesting. When I first saw it on DTRPG I was rollign my eyes because it was another Setting book of wich we got more than anyone could ever run or remember. But it actually seems to have some really usefull stuff in it.
    If you have not yet checked it out, Transylvanian Adventures for DCC is pretty neat too. its a rules expansion that tries to evoke 60s and 70s Hammer horror movies and has a ton of random tables (it is DCC after all^^). My favourite probably is the Very Bad Things table to determine the effects of being a monster hunter.

      I never understand that point of view: the world is a piece of art in itself; it doesn't need to be useful for anything at all.

    Brilliant I will be getting the hardcopy of this at the end of the month (have some POD codes on the way so I will get things in bulk) Excited for this, will use it for lots of stuff, DCC, MCC, Shadowdark, Mork Borg :-) lots of tables can be used in anything. Mix this with MCC would be fun for sure just kitbash everything ha

    At one point in the video you hinted at an “dragons becoming chaos elements as they are” (or something like that) trope emerging in the literature. I’m super intrigued by that concept too but am having a rough time trying to google it since I’m not even quite sure what I’m asking for lol. If you don’t mind, a quick Appendix N on that shit would be extremely appreciated!! Thanks dude!!!

    I recently received a huge packet of DCC material from their fourth printing kickstarter. I('m trying to convince my friends to try this game. I playtested DCC several years ago. I enjoyed the game Joseph Goodman ran. This setting looks like it would go well with DCC AND MCC.

    Ooh, two comments on your reviews in one day....stalking! I gave me Hubris softcover away to an amigo last week (everyone LOVES this book) and want to replace it....is the DriveThru hardback/softcover better than the Lulu POD in terms of paper and print quality?

    What are the ?funky dice? You can effectively simulate any of them by taking regular dice, subtracting 1 (say, a d8 to get 0-7) & ignoring the 0. Or, alternatively, d8-d8 say.

    I love the look of those location tables as well. I would have likely passed on this before seeing this video. I wish more setting books took this approach instead of having everything pre determined and set in stone.
    Good review, many thanks.

    d6 d10 = d60 Right?

    • @QuestingBeast
      @QuestingBeast  6 років тому +2

      Sure, just count the 6 on the d6 as a 0, and have a result of 00 equal 60.

    I am amazed at how is that despite Paizo having color arts, the art itself is not great. I like the retro feeling of DCC and also I love the epic arts of Conan Monolith Edition components, despite of that game being incomplete inside the box. Conan rulebooks are incomplete and the site to download the new ones is down.

    You know I'm super interested in playing DCC.....but damn if their books are not awesome. I picked up their free RPG day booklet and I totally want to run it using another system. Side note about the weird dice, if someone uses Virtual Tabletops then the funny dice is not an issue at all.

    • @shitmandood
      @shitmandood 7 років тому +1

      True enough. But the DCC RPG book's Funky Dice section has a paragraph on how to use the standard polyhedrals for the Zocchi dice rolls

    I have the DCC rulebook, it just felt really clunky and rule heavy, though I loved all of the random tables. That being said, I'm a huge fan of gonzo, so I'm going to give this one a try.

    • @samchafin4623
      @samchafin4623 4 роки тому +1

      I'm inclined to agree. For instance, I really like the spell casting chart which differentiates the effects depending on the caster's level and roll, but I think that might be really difficult to use at the table, where looking all these things up can slow down play.

  • @JesseLG1213
    @JesseLG1213 7 років тому

    Thanks for this review!! I'm a big fan of gonzo-style fantasy works, even though I haven't yet run any of those settings myself. As a semi-related question: are there any OSR-type games that you're aware of that ditch the race-as-class feature? I've been hacking OSR-type rules into my 5e games because I love the old-school feel and aesthetic, but am just not a fan of race-as-class.

    • @QuestingBeast
      @QuestingBeast  7 років тому +3

      Most of the people I know who run OSR games don't do the race-as-class thing. Whitehack is a great modern OSR game with a very freeform approach to race and class, but if you want something more retrocloney then Swords and Wizardry (both the core and complete versions) have you choosing a race and a class. Many OSR systems like The Black Hack, Maze Rats, or the upcoming Lamentations of the Flame Princess rules don't have rules for non-humans at all. You can just say that you're a demihuman and it doesn't effect your class abilities.

    It says a Sword & Sorcery setting... but I didn't see much in the way of S&S there. A fair bit of weird science-fantasy mixed with standard D&D type fantasy, but not really SS

    I hate funky dice. They're not statistically equivalent on all sides, and they're a sleazy way to force players to pay for dice that are only ever used for one particular tabletop game.

    • @QuestingBeast
      @QuestingBeast  6 років тому +3

      I don't know, if you play a lot of OSR games and like to hack them you'll almost certainly find a use for them.

      Reputable merchants (oxymoron, right?) only sell dice that test for balance using statistics and honest scientific method.

      I homebrewed my own step-die system using all these dice. I use it to run every setting, making conversions as needed. I wouldn't switch back to a standard system for anything.
