  • Today I patterned the Beretta A400 with both the Patternmaster Code Black Duck & Code Black Goose and the Kicks High Flyer Modified & Full chokes with BOSS 2" 3/4 #5 & BOSS 3" # 3/5 Shot. I shot these combinations at 35 yards and 25 yards which is the range that I normally shoot birds. In my opinion, I think both Full chokes held up to the test and you cant go wrong with either combination but you be the judge.

      Thank you !! I want to see what the gun/pattern does in ALL possible hunting ranges so that I know what I am getting into. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and a lot of people feel the need to tell you exactly what your doing "wrong" in their eyes..... I appreciate you watching and the kind words. hit that subscribe button if you haven't already , i'd appreciate it greatly.

    Measure the height of your rib to the top of the barrel at the back of the gun after the taper of the barrel, then measure the height of the rib near the front bead. The front should be lower which means your line of sight of your aim is pointed downward from the line of sight of your barrel. The further you get out, the higher your shot placement will be…until gravity takes effect at a certain distance. That’s why your 35 was higher than your 25, gravity hadn’t taken effect yet. Your gun is doing exactly what it’s suppose to do. When you decoy ducks, shoot at their feet. It’s designed to shoot at objects without covering up the target with your sight, which is what people in your comments are calling “float”. Most semi-autos use the same euro style aiming. Next time you’re at the gun store, check out the difference in the rib height from front to back of the barrel and you’ll notice most are lower in the front. I’m a big Benelli guy and I think they only have one semi auto with pure line of site where both rib height and barrel are parallel to each other…I think it was the M2. If you’re Photoshop or Illustrator guy, draw a line from centerline of the barrel and a line from the rib and you’ll see where they cross paths. I did that with my SBE 3 in scale to see where it was at 20-70 yards. If you call the manufacture, at least with Benelli, they will describe how the aim works, however, very few avid hunters notice the rib height difference and complain their gun shoots high, which it’s designed to do. Great video and hope this helps with your aim.

    Good video. I feel when you shoot at the yardage you have confidence in, you are more successful in not only taking the birds but calling them in close.

    Great video! I have the same shotgun and have been using aftermarket chokes for steel shells. The one I use the most is the Patternmaster classic duck. Last year I decided to try the Boss Bismuth just like you're using. I patterned them at 40 yards and found that they hit high as well but I also patterned the factory chokes as well. The factory chokes in my A400 patterned very well, not high, more centered and even. The modified was wider and the full was tighter as you would expect. Thanks again for your video and Great hunting!

    Good video
    No reason to apologize for patterning at your chosen yardage.
    I didn’t like some of the holes with either choke and was fascinated by the comments regarding why they were high.
    I shoot goose between 25-35 yards mostly ( ducks too) over water and and am trying new combos with my A400
    Just ordered some Boss #2 and will pattern them .

    My A400 has an extended full and improved mod stock choke. That is what I would try with bismuth. They are tighter than the steel shot chokes you are using. The patternmaster chokes don't use constriction but are wad stripping chokes. Also the lower your front sight the higher your poi on target when you do aim. If you are sighting down the rib that is why you are hitting high. Your stock full will give good results with boss just don't use it for steel. keep the videos coming.

    My SBE2 shot really high too. I contacted Benelli told them what was going on and asked if I could buy the taller front bead that they were using on the Stoeger P3500 pump guns at the time to see if it would help bring my pattern down. They sent it to me for free and it did bring my pattern down quite a bit. Considering that Benelli is owned by Beretta, I bet they'd do the same for you and your gun.

  • @dieselten01

    Put the front bead back on, remove the mid bead (if it has one) and get your face low enough that you dont see any rib. Use the shim kit to add more drop. You said in the vid “I shimmed it up”, you should shim it down - more drop hits lower on target by not letting you see as much rib.

    I would say your patternmaster patterns were high at 35 yards, would love to see the you re-shoot at 45 yards. I bet that you would be right on at 45 yards. gravity and all that physics crap. If you shoot at 25-35 yards, open up the choke a bit and see what happens. Sounds like you are probably going to slay some waterfowl this year, based on your patterning. Try a number 6 bismuth and see what happens too.

    It’s the gun, choke, and shell combo. Everytime you change something on the gun all that does is change how you sit on the gun. When you mess with shot and choke combo the pattern will change most likely. My browning a5 with a kicks high flyer throws the pattern high with migra 2-3 and 2-4. My patternmaster code black goose shoots high also but not as high and it shoots just left. Every gun and choke combo will pattern different with every person. Also a shotgun isn’t really aim and shoot. It’s more of a point and shoot type deal. Your overthinking it on problems with the gun and shims. Get the gun set up so when you throw up to shoot your beads are lined up. Hold gun in the ready position, close your eyes, throw the gun up and open your eyes. If the beads aren’t lined up the gun isn’t set up right for you. Key to shooting is hitting the same spot with your eyes

  • @michaelficarro2591
    @michaelficarro2591 3 роки тому +1

    Don't use those shims that go in front of the wrist to adjust up/down for point of aim/ point of impact, use the length of pull shims. If you're shooting high your LOP is too short, if you're shooting low your LOP is too long......

    My .02 and what I do when patterning I pattern at my max yardage I am comfortable shooting waterfowl. Once you find a pattern you're happy with, that pattern will only get tighter the closer you get i.e. lest chance for flyers and holes in the pattern also saving money on shooting extra shells at cardboard. Again just my opinion. Not saying its right or wrong

    • @g7outdoors497
      @g7outdoors497  3 роки тому +1

      @michael elliot did you ask this question to me before? Based off how you started your question it would appear that you did however I can not find a previous question from you , To answer your question, Yes some fragmentation does occur but i have read that it is normal with the Bismuth loads in general regardless of the choke. if you are looking to avoid fragmentation then sticking to Steel would be the way to go.

    Multiple arguments could be made... but unless you’re shooting a Turkey, you don’t aim a shotgun, you point it and use a lot of instincts. Shooting off a bench and aiming is a good controlled way to test chokes, but it’s probably not indicative of your actual POI. Try just shouldering the shotgun and shoot like you would at a bird.

  • @larryjistel3018
    @larryjistel3018 3 роки тому +1

    Try patterning the Shotgun without the shotcam... Rifles shoot high when the barrel is laying on the resting... You disturb the barrel harmonics... other than that... try shooting instinctive without using the beads...

    • @g7outdoors497
      @g7outdoors497  2 роки тому

      You make a great point but The old saying , "Practice like you Play" comes to mind. If I pattern the shotgun without the Shotkam and then go into a hunting situation with it on the gun, the gun may react different as you have suggested. I am a bit confused as to the mention of "Rifles shoot high from a bench", Not sure where a rifle and a shotgun relate in this situation seeing as one has a rifled barrel and the other does not. I have never sighted in a rifle free hand without a solid rest, rifles are meant too be sighted in for pinpoint accuracy and shotguns for overall pattern.....two different things.. If you noticed in the video the barrel of the shotgun was not resting in the rest and the "harmonics" should not have been effected. Having the rest gives a controlled test environment eliminating the human error of pulling high or low and lets you see what the patter is truly doing. once your comfortable with the patter I completely agree that you should shoot free hand as you would in a hunting situation. Since making the video I have removed the bead and prefer it that way. I appreciate your comments and thanks for the suggestions.

    The reason you shot high is because the barrels are bent upwards. Gun makers claim trap shooters like it this way so they can see the full target. I disagree. The way around this is to put a higher front sight on. I did this with my Maxus and now I can hit where I aim, and it also teaches me to be a better aim, not a guesser.
    Not all guns have bent barrels, but most of them do now days, and some older ones too. However, most O/U's have straight barrels and you can shoot out of the bottom barrel if you are shooting high as it changes the line of sight vs the angle of your head. It's like raising your bead.
    It's too bad the stupid gun makers insist that we accept their bull shit barrel making as ingenious. They need to make barrels for the hunter, in fact one that bends down and not up so you can put your bead on your target, not a foot or more below it. But I guess they want us to be conformists, and not an optimists.

      I could and your right at 25 yards .....Although, I did shoot a Kicks High Flyer modified choke in this test and the difference at 35 yards was not as big as I thought it would be. I don't hunt timber pockets and my shots vary from 25-45 yards , I like to shoot between 25-30 over decoys but that is not always the case. I wanted to see how the full choke options handled at 25 and 35 yards so I could feel comfortable running it in all situations. Just my preference. Thanks for the advise and watching!
