  • According to Pythagoras, ‘consonance’ - a pleasant-sounding combination of notes - is produced by special relationships between simple numbers such as 3 and 4. More recently, scholars have tried to find psychological explanations, but these ‘integer ratios’ are still credited with making a chord sound beautiful, and deviation from them is thought to make music ‘dissonant’, unpleasant sounding.
But researchers from the University of Cambridge, Princeton and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, have now discovered two key ways in which Pythagoras was wrong.

One should bear in mind that harmonicity is an objective, mathematical concept (thus we speak about the degree of inharmonicity of a plucked string, or the locked harmonics of a pipe resonator), whereas consonance is a subjective aesthetic concept (leading to piano tuning in which not even the octaves are pure). If this interests you, it's probably worth reading Wendy Carlos' musings about temperament from the 90’s, which influenced the design of the Kurzweil 150FS and my own "frequency domain" synthesiser.
It's also questionable how accurately Pythagoras would actually have been able to tune a stable and pure interval with the technology of the day.

Nothing strange for those of us who use delays, reverbs, overdrives, etc. quite common in the aesthetics of "western" music. This idea of giving life to the sound is what guitar luthiers do when we try to detune the response of the tops, the back, and the air chamber.

Maybe we're wrong , what is universal definition of the harmonies ? Just mathematical rhythm or physical, maybe if the definition mean kaotical for the nature(univer) ?
Are we sure we can't find it?🤔
Thanks Cambridge for the thought-provoking video .

Extremely interesting to any lover of music. Cultural references that depart from western ones solely resulted in this discovery? Brilliant 👏🏾, but somewhat sad it should take so long for such a study like this to provide conclusive evidence of it.
In this case, it’s good that what we hear we can prove.

Thank a lot to make studies about hamonies, frequencies and the human concept of music.... Even more when its conditionned by the western identity.
As the sing of birds, we can observ into nature that's a lot of living organisms use sounds and noises to talk and communication biochemistry most of time.
Music is a human concept to put theses sounds and noises into boxes but its not how the laws of nature tell us how life communicate.
Pythagora and the others western people started to used mathematic and human numbers to make science and art but when we look to the nature, the gold number for example shows us that is not human number in nature, only numbers with decimals.

Don’t speak about things you don’t understand.
