This video takes me right back to my freshman year at Ohio State seeing the Maniacs at the Newport. She still makes my heart skip a beat. What a crush I had on her.
My favorite of the 80s an 90s, and Natalie to go solo successfully.... Mark my words she will be in rock and roll Hall of Fame twice... Next to Stevie nicks and cher
Today this song came on while I was shopping at Trader Joe's. I kinda rocked back and forth, tapped my feet, and sang it to myself, hoping nobody would notice. Little did I know that EVERYBODY was dancing to this song! Even the employee who is polite and professional, but never smiles was dancing around singing "shiver in my bones." It was unreal. I love this song! I was raised on it and its always been a part of my childhood.
This song brought me to me knees the day after Christmas 2011 upon hearing it in a Macy’s shopping with my sister- ironic isn’t it? It triggered an intense melancholy just from the melody. Then I googled the lyrics and it was all over... had to write a novel just to sort out all of the latent grief... it was an unexpected and uncanny thing that makes me wonder to this day how a song randomly played from a store’s sound system could have such a profound affect on a person.
Natalie Merchant was not only beautiful- she had something called class! Somewhere along the years, the music industry lost that. She had elegance, talent, class and charisma.
Natalie’s performance art really amplifies the manic depression theme of this song. When you only listen to the music, you pick up depression in the lyrics juxtaposed with the manic elements such as the beat, her up tempo vocals, and her cadence in the lyrics “Do I need someone here to scold me or do I need someone who'll grab and pull me out of this four poster dull torpor pulling downward”. But live, you get all that with her smiling and dancing. The manic elements really pop.
I first heard her perform on SNL (back when it was still funny and cool). Everytime I hear this song I tear-up...it has that effect on me...thanks Natalie
This is such a great song...what other great story teller other than Natalie could write such a great pop song about someone having a really, REALLY, bad day....love it!
"and by the force of will my lungs are filled, and so I breath" I have never connected to a song as much as this one. I have suffered from depression my whole life. The 1st time I attempted suicide I was 7. Good thing I was too young to know how to it properly.
Natalie is incredible. Saw them on tour behind "In My Tribe" backing up REM, what a fantastic show; of course Stipe joined her for "A Campfire Song." She danced like this during every break. Heard later she and Stipe hung out the whole tour.
There has always, always been something about Natalie’s sound that just gets to me, in the best possible way. I honestly think it’s a combination of exquisite beauty, grace, and vulnerability. She is a gift to all who appreciate her.
Love this song.....I remember playing this cassette when I was driving to my first job interview to be a teacher back in the mid 80's......lol. No, I didn't get the job :-)
Young Natalie was so beautiful. Here she reminds me of Hayley Atwell in the first Captain America movie. A timeless talent and beauty. Bewitching. Just bewitching.
I'm 10k Maniac about this women. What a voice, what a talent!! God bless you sweetie!! you don't have to take your clothes off to sing like an angel. This is a real singer.
I was so in love with her when I was in high school and listened endlessly to 'The Wishing Chair', 'In My Tribe', and 'Blind Man's Zoo'. The Maniacs, along with The Church, shook me out of my Beatles obsession and made it clear that REAL music was still being made.
People in the Northeast us and Canada will just sit and not move.its their culture.People r sheep.Nowadays everybody bops around even when there's no music. just as bad.
I'll never forget the 1st time I heard this. They were on SNL. I was at my best friend's place. A bunch of us were partyin'...and no one was really even paying attention to the TV...until she started singing & doing her little dance. Nobody could take their eyes off the screen. Wish they hadn't broken up. I'm not sure what THAT was about......but I did get to see her "live" maybe 17 or so years ago.
Just saw Natalie interviewed as part of the NYTimes series. I was front row center, a total thrill for me! She dropped a nugget by letting everyone there know that when she tried out for 10,000 Maniacs, someone had put lsd in her water. She said she was so high, she can't believe she chosen by the band!
A song about melancholy but with an upbeat delivery. Genius! NM is perfection. I love the drum, but yes, the entire band is awesome. Guitar is next level.
This is great fun! I love how Natalie brings this optimistic upbeat attitude to a song that is actually very sad. What a dichotomy! She just can't help herself and that's part of the appeal. Oh, and the fact that she's just as cute as a damn button here!
I remember seeing this that night on TV -- though it was recorded earlier in the day.. this was the first time I heard the song and I am still listening to it over and over til this day, amazing.
@vodude your SO right, the mtv unplugged will always stand as one of the best shows she gave us,and it was all caught on vid.love the book readings between some songs.! long live Natalie M. !
It was a blessing for me to once know and hang out with a young woman who had personality and resembled Natalie on this video. Back then this was just a cool song to me, today, these lyrics could well be about me.
Unbelievable. Natalie was only 23 when she wrote this (early 1987) and wrote it entirely on her own ( unlike a lot of her other "Maniacs" songs like "Trouble Me" or "What's the matter here")
You can see the audience just mesmerized with Natalie Merchant. You can just fall in love watching her sing and dance. They really made the leap from ragtag band to rock stars during this time.
I came across this clip because I was searching for the SNL performance you mention. They were unbelievable and the next day I went out and bought my first 10,000 Maniacs album! I don't recall the other song they did that night but it was great as well!
She is sooooo AMAZING! Who has that voice and can write and sing songs in a pop alt rock happy that are so sad when you listen to the lyrics? She’s a treasure! ❤❤❤
@fraserkr I was in the Army in Alaska when my fellow soldiers and I saw them perform this on MTV or VH1. Imagine trying to get out of a sleeping bag in the woods when it is -20 F without windchill, but sometimes you've gotta or your bladder will explode.
I totally missed out on them. I finally saw them for the first time on The Tonight Show or Letterman singing Candy Everybody Wants and thought I was the next Clive Davis. Such talent.
Gentlemen behold one of the great beauties of our, or any time....Sexy, a unique and powerful voice, a brilliant composer, poet and writer....AND she could dance
• This was the band's first charting song; it was written by lead vocalist NATALIE MERCHANT and is simply about being unhappy on a day when the weather is bad and she can't think of a decent reason to get out of bed. The sombre lyrics contrast with the upbeat melody on this track: when Merchant sings words like "A quiver in my voice as I cry, 'What a cold and rainy day,'" the band plays a cheerful tune. • STEVEN GUSTAFSON (bassist): "We liked to play toe-tapping music. Stuff you could dance to with a big beat. Her view of the world was sometimes in stark contrast to that joy we got from playing. It made us unique."

This era of music can't be repeated. Sheer brilliance, talent, and inspiration. I pity today's generation having to follow these acts.
My favorite of the 80s an 90s, and Natalie to go solo successfully.... Mark my words she will be in rock and roll Hall of Fame twice... Next to Stevie nicks and cher
It’s 2021. There’s no talent like this out there now.
Agree, nothing's changed in 2022
@@mcrdl76 Yep
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Horse-shit!!! Name one artist that can compare to Natalie.. Talk your gobbletygook!!! Hah!!
Hasn't been! For like, 30+ yeaes.
Her performance on Saturday Night Live with this song in the 80s is what got me hooked.

Perhaps one of the best songs ever written about depression.
+Holly Gaskin seems to hit all the check-offs.
+Holly Gaskin yeah, but with catchy; upbeat music for that perfect level of dissonance.

I have this on vinal!! Bought it when I was 14 years old. Still have it! My wife can't stand that I love Natalie so much. Hope she doesn't break it.
This is a truly great song and it’s definitely more uplifting than Clonazepam!
Natalie Merchant was not only beautiful- she had something called class! Somewhere along the years, the music industry lost that. She had elegance, talent, class and charisma.
Was ,was,!
She dead?
Natalie my girl! You rock !
@@jentonic8861 She 's 57 now, let herself go (heavy) -still can sing ok but def. cannot dance this way any longer
@@mcrdl76 Disagree. Still looks great
You can tell by her dance moves 😍
@@mcrdl76 Are you serious? She's not 28 any more. We get older.
One of the best and most unique voices I’ve ever heard. I remember when you couldn’t escape her songs no matter what station you were tuned to.
I used to think she was singing in Portugeuse

So uniquely beautiful. An amazing voice. I could listen to her all day. I also love the way she dances. It is unique to herself. I love Natalie.
And i do also Mary Ramsey
This is such a great song...what other great story teller other than Natalie could write such a great pop song about someone having a really, REALLY, bad day....love it!
Her voice, her dancing, and that band - what a combination they were.
I saw this band in concert in 1988. Ms. Merchant and her bandmates were outstanding, hearing them live and in-person. A great memory.
Here we all are years later. We still can’t get enough of this masterpiece of a song. I was a freshman in high school when this came out. Damn.
"and by the force of will my lungs are filled, and so I breath" I have never connected to a song as much as this one. I have suffered from depression my whole life. The 1st time I attempted suicide I was 7. Good thing I was too young to know how to it properly.

Saw the as a headliner at U of Penn in 1988 with Tracy Chapman as opening act. Not a bad deal.
Didn’t change him - apparently
Saw them with squeeze at UA in 1987 at Foster auditorium. Will never forget. I was 18. I fell in love with Natalie
There has always, always been something about Natalie’s sound that just gets to me, in the best possible way. I honestly think it’s a combination of exquisite beauty, grace, and vulnerability. She is a gift to all who appreciate her.
I fell in love with her the first time I heard her sing on the MTV Unplugged concert. I subsequently have purchased all of her work.
Natalie sounds great live and I love the way she dances onstage. Thanks for posting this!
The queen of 80's alternative-college rock, r.e.m. were the kings ...
You know, I'm gonna have to go with Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. YMMY and all
Love this song.....I remember playing this cassette when I was driving to my first job interview to be a teacher back in the mid 80's......lol. No, I didn't get the job :-)
Ahh the memories! This cassette and their music got me through my junior and senior year if high school. I will forever love her.
As seen in this video ... Natalie is a true Free Spirit Bohemian and an artist in the fullest sense of the word ... so excitingly and refreshing ....
her voice is a warm wrap on a rainy day, and you wish you never get warm, so cuddly
This is still my favorite 10,000 Maniacs and/or Natalie Merchant song...love it!

I remember these days like they were yesterday. We were in middle school and in love with her.
Love watching Natalie dance.
Love Natalie Merchant! All I listened to in College! This song brings back soo many good memories!
