Less than $5?!?
Reusable "upcycled" ;) microcontrollers are not very easy to find. At least the ones that are easy to program...unless your into PIC's. I don't know why I find PIC's all the time. I've seen a few ST's as well but I probably have a dozen or more random PIC MCU's laying around on random stuff to scavenge for parts. I've also got Motorola's STC's Freescale, and TI's but without idiot level example code, the hundreds of pages in those datasheets leaves me cross-eyed. It's too much time needed for a one time trial use. It's hard to beat a simple mega328 project, especially since a 328 costs around $1 these days even in low qualities.
