    My Rad City 4 Step-through is the best money I have ever spent. I have 500 miles on it and it is a blast to ride. I upgraded to the premium headlight, small basket, and rearview mirror. It is also a great value. I was planning to buy another brand, but could not get past the $5,000 price tag. Thanks RAD!

    Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel.
    Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation.

      I agree. We have bike lanes here in Vegas but you still here of bikers being taken out by vehicles. I still ride next to the sidewalk as much as I can when i ride even when there are bike lanes. . I just don’t feel safe being out there to close to traffic with our bike lanes being painted way out away from the sidewalks.

    Bought mine and it came around 2 weeks ago, I finally finished assembly 2 days ago. Did all by myself without ever assembling a bike before. Will be riding it in Boston through this winter and can wait for it to make my life much better than my old city super thin and no gear shifter bike. Since I'm a first time ebike owner, some "downsides" that are mentioned on the video, or not exactly downsides but just not happy updates for some people, tend to be meaningless for me since I don't have the previous ebike experience to compare and also because it depends on a person's needs and wants, and if you're completely clueless like me to bike knowledge and specs some stuff you'll definitely never notice if it is a bad thing or not. I've been hearing a lot about the USB update and some complains about it, but I can't help to think that with so many power banks out there, portable and powerful, why would anyone care to have USB on their ebike? Won't that draw energy from your bike which should be reserved for the ride?? Won't that be just more gadgets to worry about when you have to lock and leave your bike somewhere?

    I wonder if they'll ever put out a version with a torque sensor. My first and only ebike uses one and it was all I'd known until I rode a lectric and jeez, I didn't like the pedaling with no effort ride. The pedals basically become a throttle button without a torque sensor.

    • @aviflax
      @aviflax 3 роки тому +1

      Same. My first ebike had a Bosch mid-drive system with a torque sensor. It was fantastic. I switched earlier this year to a RadWagon 4, which is great, but it only has a cadence sensor. I feel like I get way less exercise riding this one, even though it’s heavier and the motor cuts out at 20 mph. My next ebike will definitely have a torque sensor.

    • @CaseyDarwin
      @CaseyDarwin 3 роки тому +1

      @@aviflax That's a good way to put it. When I first started riding some people I talked to about it made comments about how ebikes are cheating and I knew I was getting a nice workout. But after riding a cadence only bike I kind of understand that perspective.

    • @PumpUptheJam81
      @PumpUptheJam81 3 роки тому +1

      You are absolutely right. I am basically “forced” to ride my mission in level 1 so I have some sort of effort involved. The remaining levels are absurd on flat ground as you basically freewheel the pedals, may as well use the throttle. For the reason my next bike will have torque sensor/mid drive.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 3 роки тому

      @@CaseyDarwin you can typically still adjust the level of support, even with cadence sensors.
      Also the bike has the biggest range of you pedal as much as you can - if you just turn the pedals with no effort the range decreases, not bad for commuting but maybe a problem on a longer tour.
      My bike has also a cadence sensor-however since it's a EU legal bike the continuous power is only 250 W, and you have to pedal more, the bike won't ride up a hill just with the motor power alone.

    • @CaseyDarwin
      @CaseyDarwin 3 роки тому +3

      @@simonm1447 I understand you can adjust the assist level on bikes with only a cadence sensor. But unless you've ridden a bike with a torque sensor it's kind of hard to explain the difference in power delivery. The best way I can think is to say that torque sensor systems amplify your effort and just make it feel like you have way more muscle than you do, whereas cadence systems pretty much bypass your muscles/effort.

I do have a question thought. how much torque does the new motor have now ? is it comparable to the climbing of a Rover? I dont exactly need the best hill climbing machine were I live but if i come across a hill id like to be able to power through it.

    I’m interested, but knowing that it was at $1,599, then jumped to $1,799, and went up again to $1,999, leaves a dull thud towards my desire to purchase. I know that inflation and parts suppliers have become raised cost, but the expensive processes of initial design was already completed years ago... This pushes me back to consider the Ride1Up 700 series for over $300 less with a 28mph PAS. Or other bikes in this competitive niche.
    Looks like a very nice bike though, but would hope for a little more savings.

  • @FrugalInventor

    Call me old fashioned but I still like the RadCity 4 better especially that it's now $300 cheaper ($200 plus another $100 off currently) than the 5. Specifically, I'd rather have the quietness and regen braking of the direct drive motor vs the extra torque of the geared hub motor. Both appear to be great e-bikes though ... I guess it's just personal preference.

    A 1800€/$ city/commuter bike, with the cheapest Mickey-Mouse-shifter in the front, a cheap Altus in the back and the best, the cheapest 7 speed cassette they can find on the market. The rear fender is jumping like a cheap afterthought. This thing isn't any better than a 1599€/$ Himiway City. Without the Motor, this thing would be in the range of the cheap bikes of around 400$/€.
    If Rad would make the Rad City a really good bike I would understand the higher price, but all the components are low end parts. What would be nice for a commuter? At least a complete 10x Deore groupset, Shimano MT200 brakes, absolutely sturdy, rattle free fenders and a head light with at least 100Lux, not that shabby 60Lux something. And the most important, some Schwalbe Marathons which almost never get a flat. I wouldn't say that it must be a Deore in all circumstances , but this bike is expensive for what it is, so the price should match the components. Even a 8 or 9 speed Acera would be ok, but a 7 speed Altus? Thats for people who want to use it as a scooter instead of a real bike.
    I don't know how it is in the US, but here in Europe you get a ton of bikes that are far better than this Rad at this high price.

    • @Benjamin_Jehne
      @Benjamin_Jehne 3 роки тому +3

      @@danimayb The Shimano Acera and Alivio are also compatible for 7 speed. So that couldn't be the point ;) . Alivio would've been also nice. The derailure is 33$ compared to the 24$ for the Altus. It isn't really a matter of price. A way nicer trigger shifter is just 15$ instead of the 13$ for this Tourney peace of sh*t.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 3 роки тому +2

      I use Marathons and MT 200s on my commuter (A European NCM Hamburg), however I prefer 8 or 9 speed systems, since the chain is wider and has typically a longer lifespan.
      I upgraded mine from a Tourney derailleur to a Deore 592, it's a great full aluminum derailleur, for less than 40 €.
      On other 9 speed bikes I ride this derailleur in combination with Acera shifters, this combination shifts really good.

      Yes, it's good for Uber eats and the insulated delivery bags with the large platform are designed to fit this bike. The fact that it's a hard-tail is a drawback for food deliveries. I am left handed. So this means that i would be using my front brake first. That would be a big problem. The lady on the phone told me that there was no problem because there was just one brake lever and it was on the left. Ok. So i ordered the bike. All happy i was going to get the bike i wanted. One day after I was looking at a video of this bike. There are 2 brake levers. Called them back to let them know I had to get the brake levers changed sides. She did not understand what I was talking about. I explain to her that I was left handed. So this is the hand i will be using to brake first. If you are left handed you would no what would happen. She put me on hold. When she got back to me she said it can't be done. If I change it myself then they will cancel my warranty. I told her to call the company where they make them so they can do the change there. She said it can't be done. So the bike that I wanted could not be done. So i had to cancel it. It is so funny they can put a man on the moon but can't reverse brake levers on a bike.

    I bought this bike and they shipped me a new bike with a bad controller! I googled it and I see lots of online reviews showing the same problem! I think you should consider this in your review and warn your fans! I'm willing to provide all the details and the communication between me and Rad Power Bikes. Please let me know if you need me to email you all the details. Again (It's not just me)

      Same exact issue here! Pedal assist and throttle failed but bike turns on. Said it was a controller issue. They don't know when I will ever receive the replacement parts. They can't give me an estimate. Everything is out of stock and they have supply issues. Could take months ! Many people have been waiting even a half a year.

      @@tommwarneke396 hey yes so the issue was the controller burned out they sent me a replacement controller it works fine. However not long after that, maybe like two weeks, my battery stopped working. A fuse in my battery blew I bought a pack of fuses for 5 dollars and opened the battery fix it myself; everything working fine.

    You electric bike dealers are all alike You've all got the hottest thing since buttered toast EXCEPT you've left out the most important component THE TIRES Bike Tires SUCK
    Nobody likes being stuck pushing their ride home because the tires can go flat at a moments notice The dealer that can come up with a puncture proof tire is gonna put the rest out of Business.

    Seven speed, limited to 20 MPH, no option for a larger battery, NO thanks

      What kind of speed/battery are you looking for? I know a company that makes e-bikes that can go 45MPH with huge batteries that can take you 60-80 miles. Hi Power Cycles makes full e-bikes. If you got a steel frame bike already, they also sell conversion kits for a much cheaper price.
