#Mazda has always excelled at building cars that truly stand out from the competition. When the original #Mazda3 was introduced, it showed the world that compact cars didn't have to be boring, you didn't have to buy a luxury brand to get a desirable small car. Over the years, Mazda built a strong reputation for sporty cars and as we move to the 4th generation of this very successful name, the 2019 model looks to be the most premium ever. This is the first Mazda product to introduce their #KODO design 2.0 which elevates the new model even further into the premium space within the segment. While we would like to see the company add a turbo engine option, the long awaited SkyActiv-X engine is apparently still coming, though we're going to have to wait a bit longer for it in America.

Hey guys! We didn’t get a chance to drive the manual transmission because by the time we got back, it was just bad rush hour traffic in downtime Sacramento. We’ll plan to do a full review of it back in DC when Mazda loans us the car at a later date. Hope you all enjoyed the long awaited Mazda3 review!

Most people are more impressed when they see a Lexus, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz logo. If you saw the Mazda 3, without the Mazda badge, you would think this car belongs in the same class as a Lexus IS, Audi A3 etc. The new Mazda 3 has a more upscale look than the previous generation.

Plus, I wonder if the speakers placed at the top of the door panels as opposed to the foot wells was the smartest move SOLELY because the potential for water damage to the speakers (particularly from your feet accidentally throwing snow off on a cold winter's morning ONTO the speaker) would always be there...

Felt much quieter, smoother, more comfortable and just laid out alot cleaner making it feel bigger inside. Hers did feel a little quicker but I assume that's because of the added awd weight. The sound system is also a huge step up and just a much more appealing car. This is a perfect daily commuter and should be at the top of the list for anyone shopping in this segment.

Since then, through 2018, nothing has changed under the hood, so I'm sure the variation was due mostly to EPA regulations.

Excellent review Sofyan, as ever. You and Alex from AlexonAutos have become my ‘go to’ reviewers whenever I want a clear and concise car review, even if I am on the other side of the Pacific in Oz. It still interests me to see how differently the same manufacturer equips essentially the same car for different markets. In Australia, the Mazda3 seems to be spec’d somewhat higher, model for model, than the USA. For example, we get rear HVC vents on all but the base model (so it’s obviously possible) although we don’t get AWD, which considering our lack of snow, is not really an issue. And we still get the option of the 2.0 litre engine on lower spec models (3 of the 6 spec levels). We also get a unique for Australia suspension set up designed for our generally poorer road surfaces, at least in rural areas. It gives Oz Mazda’s a handling edge over Europe and North America, helped by only fitting summer tyres locally.
Once again, a great review. Thank you.

I suspect they will offer a GT and/or Signature trim in the next year or two on the 3 with the turbo 2.5 as an option, next to the X engine if this model follows a similar pattern with 3’s and 6’s of the most recent generations.

Micheal Stillabower true, but then again Ford has decided to stop making ALL of its cars except the mustang. Sadly it’s an SUV world we live in. I think I’d get a GTI or GLI over this, although the AWD is very compelling at this price point. A Golf R if you can even find one is selling at MSRP for 40K +. If they gave this sedan a bigger engine, I think they’d steal a lot of Audi A3 and MBZ A class buyers. The interior is very premium and reminds me of the A3.

I live in upstate NY and the snow here can get pretty gnarly so I have to equip it with studded snows so I don't get killed on my commute. The only complaint I have after 4 years is when the snow gets deep I am pretty much a snowplow with the clearance. I love the fact that they use a real automatic transmission instead of a CVT. The SkyActiv-X 2.0 engine won't be much faster than the 2.5, if at all. It is designed to improve economy and emissions while providing comparable power, hence it is being released first in the European market where fuel is expensive and emissions regs are getting quite tough. You can only hope that Mazda will stick the 2.5T in, which I personally think is well inline with a 'premium' car approach (most premium brands offer high powered engine options, let alone 'sport' variants).
In general the European market, and perhaps Japan, gets the Mazda3 in a more premium and high-tech configuration than the US (e.g. 360 parking camera with trajectory, adaptive headlights), but the US gets more powerful engines, due to market demand.

Test drove the new 2019 hatchback today. I currently have a 2014 GT 2.5L Mazda 3 sedan with the automatic. I was surprised the automatic on my tester was shifting sloppily. My 2014 has a much better transmission. Not sure if they changed it since then but its definitely not as nice as the previous generation.
I am extremely disappointed the heated steering wheel isn't available in the USA anymore. I was really looking forward to finally having that on my new car and now need to decide if I want to get another Mazda 3 since that's not an option. I am also disappointed the navigation and auto dimming mirror isn't included in the top-end trims like my current version.
They killed it on the interior quality and the NVH is improved over the previous generation. I also didn't notice any difference in the way the car handles with the torsion beam. The hatchback does have some serious blindspots and you need to rely more on the safety systems.
Mazda, bring more of the premium features you have available in the Canadian market to the USA. I want a heated steering wheel, auto-dimming and folding side mirrors, auto dimming rearview mirror, backup camera with trajectory, backup parking sensors, and a 360 camera. Oh, and I also want the Skyactiv X engine too. Then you can justify the $30K price tag.

I'm from Europe and currently driving my old Audi A3 TDI with 140hp, but a couple of years ago I've been in New Zealand for a while and daily driving the previous Mazda 3 with the 2.0 165hp engine (non turbo). It was pretty good, the chassis and steering was way better, I just felt the need for more power only once going uphill on a mountain road (Tongariro), but in any other condition, that engine was more than adequate and enough torquey. And you can trust me, I've been driving turbos since 2003...
Here in Italy, the new Mazda 3 is available only as a hatch and with the 2.0 hybrid 122hp gasoline or the 1.8 turbo diesel 116 hp (they're slow but enjoyable thanks to the fabulous chassis). In Europe we usually get a little stiffer suspensions and AT with better software (sporty, faster). That was confirmed by some of our journalists testing both US and EU version of the car. Next month or at least in September we will get the new SkyactiveX 2.0 SCCI with the hybrid module and optional AWD. I went to the dealer and I really like the look, way better than in pictures. The dealer told me that in Europe we are getting the hybrid module because of homologation and marketing: there's this hybrid-electric craze here... millennials just want electric self driving cars...iPhones on wheels.

My wife drives a Mazda and I would buy one for me in a heartbeat if it had 30-40hp more. Such buyers are not cross-shopping the 3 with the corrola/civic/elantra etc. They are people who own GTI's or Focus STIs, or other sporty cars who could be lured with more power. Mazda finally wisened up and put the turbo-4 in the underpowered cx-5 and Mazda 6.
