Norfolk Southern Train Runs Over my GoPro

Coal Train runs right over top of it and at the end of the train the air
hose hanging down knocks my GoPro over.

Your trains are running silky smooth. Hats off to the maintainers of this line.
That is NS track and they keep it in pretty good shape. Lot's of
coal trains and a few sand trains run over this track and it makes
a lot of money for NS, so they keep the track kept up pretty good.

@@ccrx6700 What I noticed was how few flat-spotted wheels were on this train, which sure makes for a smooth-running train. The crews that handle this train regularly should be commended for good train handling practices. It seems like flats-potted wheels are an epidemic anymore.

I tried and tried to capture the exact moment when the air hose
hit it David, I was able to do it on the cell phone footage but it
was too blurry to show. GoPro taking a beating lately, sparks

Remember in the days of old in the yards they would have
a small shack dug out under a train with a bright light and
guys would inspect the cars from underneath. No one does

Man, on full screen it seems like I was actually laying down under the train and figuring out would I be able to roll out from under it before the air hose came, because i knew that is what we were waiting for. Went to an FRA class many years ago in Reno nevada. They showed a video of a camera under a train focusing on the spikes. The ties were low, and every time a car passed over the ties would pump. you could see the spikes start working up and out.

Down here in Central Florida, I follow several b-i-g (100-plus cars) CSX coal unit trains...northbound symbols R637 and CO040 to Orlando Utilities Commission (OUCX hoppers), and southbound empties, symbol EO040, with TILX-RDL hoppers. Don't think I would "dare" put my camera in between the rails, though🙃!!!
I was a bit leery the first time I did it too EBF, did some experimenting with our train first at a slow speed and worked
my courage up. That magnet holds the camera pretty good
onto the rails. We rarely see RDL cars here, I got one video of
a train with 2 RDL cars in it but haven't shown it yet. Our mine
last year actually looked into getting some RDL cars but they
decided not to. Really appreciate your taking the time to do some rail fanning with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

there are some great videos on UA-cam with the camera underneath trains and attached to the train so you can see the wheels up close and great sound effects.

Nice ,different look at the bottom on a movingly trains and I pused it on some r the wheel shot’s,and there is air under half of the wheel ,and onlt the inside 1/4 is in contact it’s the rail, wow, thanks BigAl California.

that was neat seeing the underside of the train, too bad about the low hose! bam! knocked over, hope it was
not damaged at all. a quick check for full or empty is look at the springs! if you can not see space between the
coils of the spring it is full , if there is space you can see light, empty. nice video great job Dave great catch.

The glad hand was coupled to the FRED. A lot of FREDS now
also record end of train brake pipe pressure so the brake pipe
hose is connected to the FRED. Fed requirement is that at every
crew change a brake pipe continuity test be performed before
moving the train. That measures the brake pipe pressure at the
end of the train. FRED sends that air pressure info to the loco cab.

How awsome was that. Loved the view and then seeing the air hose coming and kaboom. And to see it was still recording the sky. GoPro needs to sponsor you and provide cameras. You had the one get hit by the sparks. And know a knock down. Love the creativity where you put your GoPro. Loved it when you attached to the bucket when loading gravel too. Keep the videos coming. Seeing the locomotive heading towards the camera we also cool.

As the wheels go by the gopro it almost looks like the wheels were leaving the rails and going into the air...optical illusion. Too cool !

That's the first non double NS train on that line after I really got into the hobby! Great video and shots.
The train right before this one was loaded and it was a double
Steel City Railfan. NS has been doing a lot of putting 2 trains
together lately. I will have a video out on that loaded train
at some point in the future. Lucked out that day 2 trains within

Many years ago while still Conrail I would see a coal train heading east loaded and returning empty with a couple Reading Railroad hoppers in the train.
I've never seen a Reading car before in person John, how cool
would that be to get to see one. My 1960's Lionel train came

Kind of keeps me from getting cocky about moving 12 cars on our little siding with the Trackmobile! As you said , they’re moving some coal!
Those track mobiles are pretty cool and amazingly powerful
for their size Roger. We rented one many years ago and I got
to run it a good bit hauling ballast, top speed main line was

Roughly 60 years ago a man I considered a mentor did that with a movie camera to capture one of the last runs of steam. He had it rigged up on the ties with a string running under the rail so he could start it going at the right time. He ended up with exactly the same problem. He too forgot the last air hose.

You may have the right idea. To film the underside. You may be able to catch. Some bad bearings. Heat sink to catch over heated bearing or wore out bearings. I did not count the cars. Or hear the over all footage length.. at twenty miles an hour. It look so fast. Thanks for video. Time just passes by. Relaxes the mind.

Nice video Dave - many thanks. The view of the train from underneath looking up is kind of terrifying given all the weight and speed. It’s a good reminder to be very careful when you are near the tracks.

Next time set between the check rails. No hanging details will hit the check rails or damage would occure to equipment at every bridge, crossing and switch. A good idea for the shot but needs the right light to capture detail.

Terrifying video. One of my few phobias is moving trains and the damage they can do.
If someone watched that they would be sure and get out of the
