Very helpful, would really like to see a few examples of such a deload week.

Good stuff to think about and factor in. I would also think the difficulty of a training block could play in as well. I'm still trying to figure out what is ideal for myself as my last block I was already not able to maintain volume in the 2nd week and this block I'm having the same issue in the 3rd week, either from too much volume and/or intensity (most likely too much upper body accessories previous block and too much weight/intensity for deadlift this block.)

    Hey Mike,
What if it's only the squat and deadlift performance that decreases, but benching and pressing performance is not increasing? Could this have to do with my experience level/strength in the movements? I'm following your generalized intermediate program and find that my bench pressing performance has been steadily increasing, but I hit brick walls sometimes with squat and deadlift due to fatigue. In this case, would it be worth deloading those specific movements, while maintaining other pressing movements?

The answer to this is actually more in the juggling of training variables more than deloading. I'm working on a good way to articulate this for the future.

I believe no one wants to be the last person on Earth that still barbell squats..Everyone now is starting to get it as well as myself..They are searching for devices to squat where the majority of weight is near or completely below the hips..They want excellent spinal health !! The Pit Shark Device, congruent leg presses like the Nitro Leg Press, Hip Belt Squats or sometimes referred as Belt Squats, Hip and Harness Lift, The Frank Zane Leg Blaster, the V Squat Device, the many newer Hack Squats where you can slide the circular plates for loading on each side that are farther down below hip level, even if there is a smaller bar to load a very tiny amount on some above hip level..The Super Squat if typed in UA-cam to see Chris Jones perform and I don't see the circular plates loading high at all --at least it appears at hip level..

The first year of a heavy squatter, it isn't bad..I see this all the time in a young lifter..They go from 135 pounds up to 275 lbs after a year & then it really plateaus out to little gains but just more & more pain to the lower back.& the more weight added, the more damaged to the spine because of where its placed..Above the hip..No weight below the hips..A screw ball misplacement at that..Where in history for millions of years before a barbell back squat & squat rack was created where like a caveman had a huge cyborg like Earthworm put on his upper neck from a caveman behind & then was asked to squat with it..None..If you lift an object & put on a wagon, your knees & legs are fully straightened out..All squatting is weight below or near the hips or the majority of weight

A person one time ask me why do you say the barbell back squat has a lower horse power of kinetic force than a horizontal leg press or a hip belt lift or even the Pit Shark Device where the weight or majority of the weight is below the hips....Simple..Pick up a heavy bag of peat moss from the ground and get it up to your shoulders wrapped front and back..Can you lift a heavier bag than if you lifted it from the ground to your knees or even up to your hips..This may be a poor analogy but its why a young squatter plateaus out after a year training on average & the more weight of the barbell back squat, you just plateau out & the more weight it just damages the spine..Just like you would plateau very quick if you lifted peat moss from the ground up onto your shoulders..It would plateau out quicker..

Have to comment on the ignorant post Zambia95. Garrett is a good guy and a beast Mike Tucherer is as well. I don't see either man appreciating this childish schoolyard comment. You didn't really create controversy or even make a valid point. Time to grow up.

Steve that was uncalled for. Give me a time and a place and I will be there and you can show me how to grow up.
