I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2005. The first symptom was lightheadedness. Then I saw blood in my urine. The tumor was the size of a golf ball. Had surgery to remove kidney. I still get night sweats from time to time, outside of that I feel fine. My doctor declared me cured in 2007.
@Joseph A I'm curious about your night sweats. Is that a symptom of the cancer or a symptom that the kidneys aren't functioning normally? I'm asking because I've just found out I have something going on with my kidneys and I have horrendous night sweats as well. Lots of other symptoms as well....but light headedness and night sweats were probably my earliest symptoms.
Big fan of your videos. In 2004 I was peeing coca-cola colored urine and was diagnosed with kidney cancer in my right kidney. Immediately scheduled surgery. Turned out to be Transitional Cell Carcinoma. Followed annually with cystoscopy and periodic scans. Almost 18 years later I'm still cancer-free. My recommendation to others--be proactive. Seek early diagnosis and treatment. Do surveillance for the rest of your life.
In 1999 I had a kidney stone. I had an x-ray study done and the doctors didn't like a shadow they were seeing so they ordered a cat scan. The cat scan showed that I had kidney cancer. After having other tests done surgery was scheduled. The surgeon a brilliant man, did a partial nephrectomy on my left kidney. He cut away about 1/3 of my kidney, the large blood supply artery and vein bundle, and a softball size tumor that I never felt any pain from. The pain I was feeling was actually from a stone that was also present. The tumor was about half black in color and that part was dead tissue. The most pain I had post op was from the rib rhat had to be removed so that the surgeon had enough room to work. It took about 8 monrhs before I could lay down on either side. Thankfully I didn't have to go through chemo therapy. I was and have been cancer free since they rolled me out of the operating room in October 1999.
Thank you for this very informative topic. 👏 My husband died from complications of Renal Cancer. He smoked, was over weight & had a long history of Purine kidney stones. Did not take his med...allopurinol regularly & often passed stones or in his case, he urinated the stones as orange sand. Should you have any concerns...please take them seriously. He was only 61. Be well & stay safe.
Found mine at 45 due to a kidney stone. Faced removal of kidney or mass only. Thankfully only had to remove the mass. Now 47 and good check ups so far. Thanks for all your info and advice.
I had an incarcerated hernia that required emergency surgery. While performing diagnostic imaging is when my kidney cancer was found. The biopsy came back positive. Fortunately it was taken care of with outpatient cryogenic surgery.
I was diagnosed aged 47. 8.5 x 8cm tumour. No symptoms apart from my legs swelling up once when I was on an aircraft. Never thought anything of it. Was found by accident
Had open surgery aka the Big Slice in August 2008 on left. They did cryoablation for 3.1 sonometer and was good to go. Yeah, recovery on that stinks. Then found another mass on left kidney four years later and did laparoscopic with Da Vinci robotic assist for different mass which was 1.6 sonometer having grown from 1.2 when first detected several months prior. Still have the kidney thanks to Hackensack Urological Oncology in New Jersey. Simper shout out to Dr Jennifer K Yates (now at UMass Worcester) for being an incredible surgeon and Dr Ravi Munver with the assist and now head of the department.
Thank you for shedding light on this. I was wondering if you might be able to point to some resources where certain conditions such as CKD Stage 3/A1 might be a factor or what to watch out for with that.
My mother was diagnosed aged 53 at the onset of extreme pain brought on by a bedspring. She died age 56 because it was so large and had spread. Her only symptom was the onset of a cough which the doctor wrongly diagnosed as asthma.
Diagnosed in 2015 with renal cell carcinoma had a full nephrectomy the summer of 2016 I had no symptoms at the time it was found when I did a MRI on my back I was sent to get a biopsy and the doctor refuse to do it cuz he said it was a simple cyst you have to be your best advocate for yourself he was wrong and if I would have listened I'd probably be dead by now
I was in a hit-and-run car accident last year and when all of the imaging was completed it was discovered that I had a large growth (benign cist) on top of my left kidney about the size of a handball or a racquetball (bigger than a golf ball and smaller than a tennis ball). I am scheduled for 6-month imaging follow-ups and lab work. I do not know if taking Ibuprofen for over three decades could be a related cause for the renal cist. My doctor informed me that patients as young as infants can have cists on their kidneys during autopsies so there is no rhyme or reason on why some patients have them and others do not.
I have a family member (she's in her mid 60s) with congenital Polycystic Kidney Disease. She had a kidney transplant two years ago. The native diseased kidneys were not removed and have less that 10% function. Ultrasound shows numerous cysts on both native kidneys. Does this person have a high probability of kidney cancer? She has nephrologist visits with labs every six months and annual visits to the transplant center.
@@jkhegarty4317 its not actually a new concern , 6 months ago i had an ultra sound & psa test because things have gradually got worse but came back all normal although flank pain everyday. The concept of pelvic floor issues is seems to resinate. 👍🏼
Hi Dr. Just saw your post. So I have a 4 cm Renal Mass Carcinoma by opinion of my nephrologist & he’s going straight into surgery & NOT A BIOPSY. ITS UP BY THE BLOOD ARTERY & mid section. He will remove the one kidney the other is healthy as I never smoked, ect. Very outdoor Person & walk about 5 miles a day at work as I stand up also. Do you concur with his surgery decision?! I never knew how sensitive kidneys are against chemo, freezing or radio wave therapy ect! 😮 thx u for your opinion!🌺🙏🌺
She mentions in the video that biopsies are usually done in people who are not good surgical candidates because they aren't always accurate and there is a small risk of seeding which means spreading the cancer cells-which you really don't want. I also heard of a patient' getting a complication from the biopsy needle damaging an artery. Since you are fit for surgery it makes sense to have it removed as 80% of solid kidney masses are malignant.
I had a cough, night sweats, then weight loss. Discovered a softball sized tumor in my left kidney. Officially stage 3. Had a nephrectomy. 10 months later I am stage 4 with a metastatic lymph node in my chest and a tumor on my adrenal gland. I was healthy and this has been my only health issue ever. Go figure. Never had pain.
Sorry to hear. If the metastases are limited you can have them surgically removed. Please look into that and get 2nd opinions as patients have been known to survive for decades after removing isolated kidney cancer mets. If not, perhaps immunotherapy may work for you. Best wishes.
@@Tiggytoo thank you for replying! Most doctors I have talked to now (3) feel like surgery is not an option and it may be systemic. In the 10 months between nephrectomy and stage 4 I was on a Keytruda plan. Now I am in a clinical trial.
By biopsy it was discovered that I had a clear cell 4cm kidney cancer in my left kidney not far from the blood supply arteries. The urologist took 7 weeks to tell me of the diagnosis and left the next day for a 2 month vacation. I am waiting to speak to another urologist surgeon to find the best plan on action. He called me to push back my appointment another 3 weeks. I think that 3 months is a long wait time for any kind of cancer? Am I panicking without cause? I found on my own through You Tube that one procedure could be to reduce the size of the tumour and then remove it with computer assisted parascopy. I think that is the procedure that I would prefer. Would you recommend that? How would the size of the tumour be reduced? Thank you for your help.
Incidentally .. Yep. No blood, no urine, no pain, no issues. Oh your liver enzymes are elevated lets to an ultrasound to be safe. Then as they are doing that I am overhearing things like try to get a view of that mass (oops). So they recommend a MRI. And many small cysts, and a 5cm by 5cm by 3 cm pass in the right Kidney. My journey and visit to the urologist begins. We'll see what it becomes. But I've had no loss of any functions no symptoms (or everything patent or flowing well .. so far). A TOTAL surprise but maybe lucky
Because of my medical condition, I get regular blood tests which includes kidney function. But yes...blood in the urine is the main indicator. And where the heck am I going to run into Cadmium? 😄 But yes, if there's any change in your urination, get a CAT scan or MRI. CAT scans are better, but more facilities have MRIs.
Should I be concerned that after a single cat scan the Dr and radiologist said they could see a cyst on my kidney or should I be getting a second opinion?
Kidney cysts are not cancerous ie malignant. Only solid masses on the kidney are potentially cancerous (around 80% of them). People with multiple cysts on their kidneys are at an increased risk of kidney cancer, however the cysts do not become solid tumours. It's just an independent risk factor for kidney cancer.
Had a stone removed from the right kidney 2 months ago. Cancer found in the left kidney. 8cm Stage 2A. Will have my kidney removed at the end of this month. Great way to start 2025… 😣
