    I've found this type of massage helps a great deal when it comes to TMJ. I've suffered with this condition for eight years. The pain goes beyond the jaw and affects your neck and shoulders as well (everything is connected), so when I would receive this kind of massage the physical therapist would also massage the back of my neck and get me straightening my back and lifting weights.

      Absolutely, I'm a big fan of massaging, stretching, and strengthening everything in the general vicinity of pain/dysfunction.

    Thank you for this video and sharing the knowledge! I am a brand new LMT...literally start my 1st massage job on Monday! I personally have suffered from severe TMD, disc clicking, and flares of trigeminal neuralgia. I want to specialize in TMJ modalities to hopefully help others so they don't have to suffer as I have. Thank you again for this knowledge!

    I had anterior displacemen ot TMJ for 2 yrs. After appointments w/dentists, MD's, chiropractors, massage therapists, NO relief! Finally a PA suggested PT. After 1 visit with the Therapist, I finally had a bit of relief. 3 months of therapy and I am almost pain free. Bite is still a bit off. Thank you for this video.

    SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! I need this massage in my life like oxygen. My jaw is starting to seize up and I have to nearly dislocate my jaw to open it again! But lovely video! Very informative. Have you heard of ASMR at all? You are perfect at it even if you dont realise it! xx

      +WhisperAudios ASMR Hi! You might like this jaw self-massage video from my other channel. It's a little less time-intensive than the one I link to in the description, and a lot of people have had positive results. It's also super old and embarrassing: ua-cam.com/video/mrXpuEsHHiA/v-deo.html
      I've heard of ASMR, but I'm going to go to Bob Ross route: I'll teach, and if people find it relaxing, that's a neat bonus :) Thank you for the kind words, let me know if the self-massage helps!

      +Massage Sloth It will be worth just including the ASMR tags to get your videos out there. Getting the views from the ASMR community will be well worth it, with your calm voice and ability to teach, you can easily have a great career in youtube in your future. This is by far one of the most relaxing videos I have watched in a while. I wish I could find treatment like this in my city, my jaw is killing me. Good luck, thank you

    I've just watched this and your self massage video and had instant relief during a work trip to the US - I've had my jaw clenched since Sunday (and for three years prior!). The strangest feeling where I feel nauseous and relieved at the same time. Thank you so much for something different that actually works.

    I like what you are saying because everything I have learned so far about TMJ treatments has been about specific work, glove work, and TRP's etc. The problem is I have always felt like this has made things worse and as a new therapist I felt like it was all my fault, but because I wanted to help the client I just started saying that TMJ work is more effective when done gently to relieve the stress built up in these muscles. I thought it probably wasn't a good idea to make stuff up, but it was the only way I felt things change and relax. It's nice to know that my felt sense of what was more necessary is also felt by someone else.

      It's still got good info, but when I eventually remake it, I'll probably have less emphasis on trigger point work. The longer I work, the less need I see to hold painful points instead of just slowly ironing over them. Something I'm willing to be wrong about!

    Had this done at my physical therapy for my jaw last year and it felt so good, let me have relief for several hours after each visit which made it easier for me to sleep. The point was to have me get better filler but I have much more intense jaw joint issues I've found so my jaw is still bad but man the PT could really help my muscles calm. Wish I could do it once or more a week.

      Hi Amelia! I've got a video more targeted at self-massage for this area here: ua-cam.com/video/DZ-IfNIPFXM/v-deo.html And yes, I do think that jaw/temple stuff could contribute to eye pain. That said, when I hear about ocular pain, my main suspect is the trapezius and the base of the skull. My recommendations for making those areas happier would be stretching the pecs, and doing neck retractions, both of which I recommend googling. That said, if you'd like a better resource than Google, consider seeing a physical therapist who specializes in the neck and head! If all this self-treatment doesn't do the trick, then please do see a doctor and/or PT for further evaluation and treatment. Best of luck!

    I have a constant tightness feeling in all the muscles of the throat, jaw and neck on the left side only. When I open my jaw wide I can feel the tightness of the medial pterygoid while the right side is fine. I don't have any pain, headaches, clicking or grinding. Its just this contant tightness feeling and its been like this for a few years now. What caused this in the first place. I asked a couple of doctors who had no idea or didn't care. An internist told me that maybe because I have arthritis in my cervical spine near the nerves that could be causing it but that was a guess. Could I have your thoughts. Would this help reduce all the tight muscles. Every single muscle on the left side of my throat, jaw and neck seems to be tight.

    Quick question/concern!! I have chronic headaches and neck pain. I went to a massage therapist once and it helped me a lot. I get less headaches than I did a few years ago (from a lot of stress my doctor said). I have Chronic Motor Tics so I have an issue with picking up repetitive habits. Recently I am addicted to biting the insides of my cheeks. I noticed that my headaches and neck pain started up again. I'm trying to quit biting my inner cheeks because I know the cons it can cause me- but it's hard because right now it's the only thing to help my stress from college, and to me it feels great. I'm trying to find healthier habits and stop this habit. Should I see a massage therapist to get a TMJ Jaw massage or quit biting my inner cheeks and see if it gets better, etc? Thanks!

      I have ocd (harm ocd) along with picking disorder (not severe) have you considered seeing a therapist/psychiatrist?
      I say this because you'd be surprised how our mental issues connect/impact to our physical body.
      There are certain psychiatric medications that can help relieve your "tics"
      Btw I know you may not see this message but if you do good luck.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  8 років тому +14

      +Majj Majj Hello! Many people get relief from joint manipulations, and there is some limited evidence for its efficacy for some applications. That said, there tend to be many curious claims in chiropractic circles that are unsupported by research (which, I should note, can be said about claims in massage circles). Not a very satisfying answer, I imagine, but let me sum it up this way: I'd much prefer my clients who have chronic pain to go see a physical therapist for a stretching and strengthening regimen. Thanks for the question!

    I’ve had this stressed “tight tone” since Invisalign braces 2015 caused by stress and clenching at night, but no joint pain. I’m 2 weeks into mindful daily “jaw hang” but can feel this tight tone daily. Any home remedy? How long will it take to beat this? So grateful for you.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  6 років тому +2

      I've got an old and somewhat embarrassing video on self-massage for TMJ issues: ua-cam.com/video/mrXpuEsHHiA/v-deo.html I like the idea of that mindful jaw hang; getting to the point where I could easily allow there to be some space between my teeth was a big help for me.When my pain was at its worst, one or two slow self-massage sessions per day, as well as a cold or hot pack (whichever you respond best to) once or twice a day was what made the difference. Just realize that any change in resting tone takes quite a while to really take hold, so just do what your jaw responds to, and give it plenty of time (weeks or months) to change. Best of luck!

    Thank you for going slowly so I could follow along (I have to do the massage myself). But, I have bruxism. My right jaw is super tight and very sore. I can get headaches at the temples. But, I also have shoulder, back of head and neck stiffness. I also feel it hard to swallow on the right side where I have the most myofascial pain. Why is it also hard to swallow? Thanks!!

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  7 років тому +1

      Hello! It's possible that daily work with your jaw could help with these other problems, but the swallowing difficulties could have another cause, one best diagnosed by a doctor. Medical imaging might be useful, and they may be able to refer you to a physical or occupational therapist who deals with problems of the head and neck. Even if it is all muscular, a prescribed regimen of exercise and stretching could deal with that widespread pain. Best of luck!

      Massage Sloth Thank you so much!! When I get tight muscle spasms around the jaw, shoulders, and neck, that is when swallowing on the right side (the affected side) becomes tight also. I do have slowly progressive dystonia that started in my legs and moved gradually upward to the arms and torso. My neurologist is not totally sure it is dystonia, but it could be. Mostly myofascial spasms that are tight and painful. This video really helps!! Thank you again!!!

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  5 років тому +1

      I use this as my first line treatment for all jaw-related problems because it has such broad action across the relevant fascia. If this wasn't effective or only resulted in limited resolution, that's when I'd start considering intraoral work (which is something I need to leave to in-person trainers). So yes, I'd start here.

      Hi Amy, I haven't worked with any children with torticollis, but, as a certified know-it-all, I do have some advice. The first is to try different positioning. This might mean a thin pillow under the head as you work while the client is supine, with the head turned toward the contralateral side (i.e. if the right SCM is painfully contracted, see if turning to the left allows it to relax). You may also have success with side-lying. If using a thin pillow that allows the head to droop relative to the shoulders, place the affected side down (if the right SCM is contracted, have her lay on her right side). If you've got a big puffy pillow that raises the head, do the opposite. If doing side-lying, I recommend the option with the thin pillow that allows her head to droop toward the affected side-the weight of the head and the lateral flexion toward the hypertonic muscle might be enough to get it to calm down. In all cases, make sure that the positioning is comfortable at first, and again after a few minutes have passed.
      I would also try some calls to action through the course of the massage, having her do some gentle isometric contractions of the affected muscle's antagonists (look into "reciprocal inhibition"). The following examples are for a client with an affected right SCM: Once you have her positioned comfortably and have finished a little warm-up of the shoulders, place your hands along the sides of her skull and ask her to gently (!) try to rotate her head to the right while you resist. Keep her head static, and ask her to use less force if it feels like more than a few pounds of pressure. Ask her to release the pressure and continue the massage. After a few moments, place a hand on the left side of her skull and ask her to gently try to tilt her head toward her left shoulder as you resist. Count of 5, release. Finally, place your hands along the posterior portion of her skull and ask her to press her head back, hold for 5, then release. These can all be done with the client in supine or side-lying. You may want to repeat one or more of these while making contact with the affected SCM to see if its tone reduces.
      As for the massage itself, as always I recommend working broadly, and starting where the pain isn't. I'd start with broad, feel-good work with both shoulders, slow myofascial work with the face, and then work my way toward the neck. Make sure to work with the SCM on both sides, and to contact levator scapulae on both sides. You might find that it's involved as well. If one of them is rock hard, you might want to work on it while the head is tilted toward it.
      Finally, don't worry if little progress seems to have been made in any one session. I'm hoping that this client also has a physical or occupation therapist (or at least has PT exercises she can still be doing), and that the client and her parent/guardian know that change can take time. Even if the massage regimen doesn't result in a change to muscle tone any time soon, it may help with pain and overall comfort. Let me know if you have any questions, and best of luck!

    does breathing through your nose and focusing on not clicking jaws work? You want to focus on silent jaws not clicking joints?

    • @MassageSloth

      It's more like "I want my jaw to be slightly slack rather than super tight." Rather than thinking about mouth versus nose breathing, the ultimate goal is for you to dynamically switch as needed as you allow your lower teeth to hang out a few millimeters from your upper teeth. This is something that's difficult to comprehend when your jaw is super tight (believe me, I know). If you'd like a self-massage version of this video where I talk a bit more about this experience, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/DZ-IfNIPFXM/v-deo.html

    can tmj cause neck and shoulder pain ....I don't notice jaw pain but latest osteopath says it is very tight

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  Рік тому

      There is a lot of "cross-referencing," so to speak, between the jaw and the neck. Someone who keeps their jaw tight, or even grinds their teeth, is probably more prone to neck tension and pain, and vice versa. But is TMJ stuff the *cause* of your neck and shoulder pain? While I think it might be a useful piece of the puzzle, I'm much more likely to blame the local posture and activities than something farther away. If you were my client, I would recommend that you see a physical therapist for further evaluation, and to receive a customized regimen of stretching and strengthening for your neck and shoulders. If your pain persists or worsens, keep following up with your DO, or seek a second opinion. (And yes I do think that massage can be a useful adjunct to this, but it wouldn't be a replacement for physical therapy, etc)

    Hi Ian, when you say that employing these techniques can reduce the tone in the muscles of mastication, do you mean that these techniques can eventually reduce the size of your masseter muscle? I used to have a very slim jawline, but recently I've found that the lower half of my face has gotten wider due to the growth of my masseter muscle. I am guessing that this may have been caused by both tensing/clenching my jaw during times of stress. I've also been experiencing neck pain/tension when I look down (touching my chin to my decollete area). Can this neck tension cause tension in the jaw and eventually lead to hypertrophy of the masseter?

      G Deatherage have you tried any deep breathing meditation? I had severe vertigo for almost a year and the main cause was high levels of the hormone Cortisol, caused by high levels of stress over a long period of time. Deep breathing has shown to reduce the levels of cortisol, allow the lungs and diaphragm to expand fully, creating more oxygen for your blood as well as opening up the ribs and chest. I recommend starting with 5-10 min of deep breathing every day. You should see results in a week (my symptoms were completely gone in 2 weeks). I would also recommend stretches to open the chest and sides, as well as the techniques found in this video. ~Tovah Chickee RMT

      When I'm working with TMJ dysfunction, I'll usually spend about 10-20 minutes on the jaw, neck, and shoulders while the client is supine. The rest of the time can be divided however you see fit.

    • @MassageSloth

      Over time, these overworked muscles can develop some serious sensitivity. The best solution is to use less pressure, sometimes way less! In fact, if the area is sensitive enough, it might feel like you're barely touching the skin. Go slowly, meet the client at their comfort level, and think of how this will affect them over the course of months, not in a single session. Over time the sensitivity will decrease, as will the muscle tone. If this is massage you're doing on yourself and your pain persists or worsens, I do recommend that you see a doctor for a proper evaluation. Best of luck!
