People like you and my dad are remarkable, I have never been able to tell which mark equals which measurements. 😄 I have no problem with inch and half inch, but everything else no. I would just have to do the wall by sight and the "well it's at this many lines from the inch mark" .

This is a great example of attention to detail and a do it now to avoid it haunting you each time you walk the hallway. 👍
I live in a 130 year old home that knows no level or plumb. Even the windows are each a different size. Apparently that crew did everything with a wonky eye.

As a retired drywall finisher I have to warn you, that butt joint right next to the door with your already 1/4 thick of mud is going to create a hump. You would be better off cutting it close to the door and use new sheetrock all the way to the door frame and re-trim over it. I won't harp to much on how that thick mud is going to crack horribly later on down the road.

So... the whole trim looking smaller and having all that mud was really bothering me after I posted this video so this morning after thinking about it I decided to get creative. I grabbed a paint scraper and scraped all that old mud off. Since the wall was moved it actually worked out nice. Not perfect but waaaaay better. Now my trim will not be buried behind the mud. There is always a way! I appreciate the comment and totally get where you are coming from. Honestly this might be my (for lack of a better term) laziest video ever. I think I am just so done with this hallway... I want to start on the kitchen! Soon! Thanks for watching!

very eerily familiar the builder built the stairwell wall to my basement not plumb. I added a door to the bottom that was plumb by extending his wall. The top of the wall to the bottom trim was off by 1/4 inch from top to bottom. I mudded and sanded that wall for a week to get it looking as "perfect" as I could so your eye wouldn't be drawn to it.

Don`t know about your building codes. But here in Germany you would put an 45° angle on the edge of a drywall sheet. Then fill it up with mud, let it dry. Then after the mud dried and collapsed into the seem you would put on the tape and then start doing the finishing mud. Anyway, nice work!

Hey, David. Great question. Typically I would tear all of it up but I got it tested and one of the layers in the kitchen came back as containing asbestos so I am not touching it. Just going to go over it as it is in good shape and the only time you need to remove it is if it is falling apart. Only thing that makes me sad about that is I kind of have to do a floating floor instead of real tile like I wanted to. 😞. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it!

All that work for 1 inch? That depends on the person doing the work, or the home owner who's paying to have the work done. In regards to the person doing the work, I would absolutely do it! I'm also a perfectionist. I learned at an early age whether building new or doing a renovation if you overlook small details here and there, like a slightly out of square wall, or not bothering to fill all the nail holes in your trim work... it adds up. The poor workmanship becomes evident and detracts from the home and the quality of work performed when you do a walkthrough. My house is over 40 years old and due to the house having a foundation issue and settling as well as the work crew doing half ass work back in the 1980's... not a single wall, doorway or floor in my house was true, level or plumb. When remodeling the kitchen I did the same exact thing demonstrated in this video... and I did only picking up a 1/2 inch! Taking pride in a job well done is immensely satisfying.
Hats off to The Fixer for having the work ethic missing in so many of today's contractors and handymen.

Take that chunk out all the way to the door. You're still going to have a messed up wall. Just remove it and use a full sheet. Why? Because you have to float that joint out and you'll have screwed up trim.. Can't remove and mud then replace because the trim will be out of line with the other side and header!

The shorter the section you try to make up the inch difference the more you will see it. Then you reveal the mud build up that makes the bathroom door molding look uneven. THEN we see TONS of extra mud all over that wall. So why on earth, are you not removing enough of the drywall to actually fix the situation? This short section approach does not make tons of sense.
Part of the problem IS the extra mud you slathered on before yet you aren't fixing it?
Also isn't blue chalk for indoor use but red chalk is not as it is more permanent and more likely to bleed through paint?

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair

Because so many buildings in the UK are old stock, you never have square walls in a refurbishment. When using a prominent square tile, we often use a plain or random pattern border in which to lose the difference in size. Otherwise we have to just knock everything down, hahaha.
As you know you will never get perfection in a timber framed house, there's too many joints, junctions and movement. Movement over here tends to be higher than the US, due to the higher water content of our wood, never ever fully dries out 😂.
One really bad job we have ended up just building a new square wall in front of the old one, especially in properties that have a listed interior. You are allowed to cover over with a structure that can be removed and the original wall, etc. returned to its as found condition. The joys of a country where we have temporary houses from WWII, which were built to last ten years are still in use now and probably in another fifty years.
A lack of funding to rebuild is always an issue, we're not as rich as you, lol.
    Good work yet again.

I am sort of a perfectionist. I would want that whole wall removed and fixed and, add some electric outlets to upgrade the electric in that area. My money pit of a house was built in the mid to late 1950s and, the electric is very insufficient for the times plus the original owners screwed with the electric and, hid it on us. Fixing as we find the screw ups. I am all for doing a job right and, not cutting corners.

It’s not the size that matters. It’s how you use it lol.

@@TheFixerHomeRepair well if it does, it's always the perfect excuse to buy a better model. I used to work for Ryobi years ago. Didn't make the tools, but instead made transmission castings. We did have some of the machines that made their tools. They were converted to make small transfer cases for John Deer lawn tractors. Anyways, I love your content and enjoy watching your videos.🍻👍
