    When we were first married I bought a corner cupboard from an antique store, almost just like yours, although ours had doors on the bottom. I put an antique red finish on it, similar to yours. It later was painted bright white as our tastes changed. I think one of the girls has it now. I have Brumby rockers on my front porch. We have two left out of five that I inherited from my mother. I have replaced their cane bottoms with oak skates, that I cut from a tree that I cut down. They have cushions in them. I just rebuilt a child’s rocker that was or youngest daughters. One of her girls destroyed it. I put it back together, replaced one of its rungs, filled in all the dents, sanded and painted it bright white, just like my Brumby rockers. It looks almost new.

    Whilst preparing the fare on yon three legged stool, my friend. I would like stewed mutton or venison with carrots, wild onions, garlic, corn and sourdough cornbread, please for which I will pay you most handsomely. These few months at sea from England to these colonies have forced upon me brined beef, dirty water, and tough ship biscuits of which I never care to sup on again!. (LOL) Love the furniture so far.

    I could not find your comment about the “Swamp Fox”, General Francis Marion, but my 5th GGF, Capt. john Tomlinson of SC, served with General Marion during the Revolution. John was a son of William Tomlinson, who you mentioned in another edition of The Woodland Escape. John moved to Georgia after the Revolution and was the progenitor of this First Family of Georgia. The Tomlinson’s were from Osterhouse, England, according to my cousin, Harry Tomlinson, of Thomasville, GA. Osterhouse is between London and York.

    I remember one of my machinist mentors telling me a story about his high school, Woods shop instructor. He was going over the tools and pointing out which tools were to be used for what and through part of the presentation he pulls out a 16 ounce ball peen hammer, and very clearly firmly and succinctly stating that if he ever seen someone drive a nail with a ball peen hammer he was gonna make them pull the nail out with it.😂
    I think about that every time I grab the nearest hammer that is most certainly a ball peen and drive a mail with it. 🤣

    Early Windsors produced in the woods by Bodgers with little more than a pole lathe and a hatchet. All from green wood, quality varied from bodger to bodger and prices paid were low. Quite likely many bodgers made it from England to the frontier.

It would seem that nails would not have been in great supply in 1750 AD and would have been of the primitive wedge shape, pegs and tongue and groove were also used extensively. Time being a factor I’m sure the modern nail is of course very time efficient.

      The top is simply a piece of walnut cut on a 60 degree angle and 3 hand whittled legs. The log it came out of was only about 15” in diameter but, cutting it on the bias gives a top that is 3 feet long.

    I have subscribed and watched many of your videos. I do wonder about the hammer I see you use. It looks like a modern Ball pein, or machinists hammer? Is it a period hammer, or just what was handy? Great content for sure!

      Well Dan, it was just handy and no it is not accurate but, I had a blacksmith friend make me an historically correct claw hammer which will be in future episodes.

    i have a buffet with a hutch that came from a house my great grandfather built. I was wondering if there is a way to tell by the trim what period it was made and where. The home was built in Aldershot which is now Burlington.

    Would a poor settler have used nails so freely; maybe wooden nails or pegs instead? Would a poor settler have used a perfectly useful workbench as a countertop? Wouldn't it make more sense to use it as...a workbench?

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  7 місяців тому

      You are right on both counts. I did use wooden pegs in different part of the construction on door and window frames etc. Surviving 18th century furniture if built crudely, say by a booger would have been pegged but, finer furniture was nailed.
