In order for this process of bee democracy to work, each bee has to be willing to objectively decide on the desirability of a site, regardless of whether or not this is a site which she herself found. If humans were to try to repeat this process, humans would have difficulty exhibiting such impartiality. Unfortunately, human nature is such that we tend to prefer the option which we ourselves found, regardless of whether or not it is the best one.

Humans egos are very strong. That is why nearly every human culture has practiced a coming of age ceremony that includes some sort of mind-altering state that induces ego-death. It is a necessary part of human development in order for us to be able to impartially and effectively engage with the world. This is why it's a shame that drug use is so stigmatized.

      Moral:
Do your own research on the issues.
Don't pay much attention to the personalities: just the message and evidence.
Know what a good hive/policy looks like before the process even gets started.
Once you make up your mind, spread the message! (and tell others to do their research)

If you encounter a bee swarm (the clump of bees trying to find a home), please find a beekeeper. And watch as they react with “oh, FREE BEES”.
Basically, since they’re already trying to find a home, it’s really easy to catch them. You just have to make sure that the box you’re presenting is the best quality home they can find. A beekeeper might speed that up by finding and taking the queen and sticking her in the box, since she’ll call everyone else over.

Don't know if this is more appropriate for SciShow or SciShow space, but it would be great to see you do an episode on research related to bees in space. Considering all the focus in recent years on sending people on longer and longer space missions, I would think they'd would be critical in future colonial food supplies assuming they could survive and procreate in those environments.

What I find interesting about bees is how cohesive they are. I mean for 99% of them to agree on the same hive location they must all be similarly built in terms of their ability to judge something so objectively. Something we humans clearly lack with our widely varying experiences and opinions. I guess it helps that they all perform the same role in society so it's not too difficult for them to judge what the best place to build a hive is and come to an agreement.

Non-bee related question: How did farmers protect their crops from pests before the invention of pesticides?

Diversity. Some plants attract pests, leaving other plants alone. Other plants repel pests. Try having only one cabbage in a concrete balcony, pests and birds will very likely destroy your cabbage very quickly. But if you have 100 species of plants, even if they're all edible, in your balcony, birds won't come even close to it, and insects will eat just a little of your cabbage. I have done this for some time, works perfectly.

I was watching Shark Tank and there was an inventor who made a home bee-hive system. The system had combs that where made of plastic and split in half. You would buy the bees and once they filled up the combs with wax and honey, you would press a button, the wax would split in half, and honey would come pouring out. I want that in my backyard.

Noting from another SciShow episode on different kinds of eyes in nature, that bees can see a wider spectrum of light than we humans can, and that spectrum of colour includes ultra violet - and, this I think is so cool cos I had NO idea: many flowers actually grow ultra-violet patterns on their petals to help direct a bee to the pollen - could CCD be somehow related to the increased use of energy-conserving Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) and white-LED lights? I'm assuming these types of light emissions include hectic ultra-violet signatures that maybe are completely messing with bees' ability to navigate? Like, just as the sun is going down in the late afternoon and bees start heading home, all these crazy lights come on and disorient the bees such that they never make it home for the night, or at all?
