The hardest lyric for me to hear has always been "You don't understand who they thought I was supposed to be". I instantly feel like shame for all the things I've ever done that would have let my parents down. The lyrics to all AIC songs are assumed to be about drugs, love, or the love of drugs. I think the reason they touch so many people is you can see yourself, and your situation, in them, regardless of what it may be. The power of words....

Layne was from Seattle. The guy to the left long blonde hair was another guy wanting to do music but went from band to band met Layne and Layne took him in and that's why you see him and Layne are so close. There was another guitar player that began to Mike but his addiction was messing up the band as they were taking off and him and Layne were STUCK TOGETHER! Layne DID NOT WANT HIM FIRED! But they had to. Layne if you watch the early new guitar guy even interviews he wouldn't have anything to do with him. The drummer is original to. Demri Laynes girlfriend was very ADDICTED! She had bad health issues died several times. HE WAS SPIRALING AND LOST TO HIS ADDICTION 6 YEARS LATER STILL GREIVING HER. On this show, he and the other guitar player to the right shot up on the back before coming out. Layne carried his own mix. That's why he has his eyes closed. He had lost many teeth. If you see him before and hear him here, you can tell it's hollow in his cheeks. Also this almost wasn't done! Layne was sent the recording of the to be published show and WAS LIVID!!!! He called a producer he worked with before after his addiction was BAD this guy could make Layne sound good. The producer is the one that brought the words to Layne when he forgot it in this. But he was yelling that MT. MADE HIM LOOK LIKE A CRACK ADDICT NO IT'S NOT HAPPENING! He had his hair died pink. They didn't know when he came. BUT IT WAS A PLUS BECAUSE THEY TOOK IT BACK AND ALL THE LIGHTING TWEEKING THIS AND THAT THEY SENT THIS BACK TO HIM AND THIS IS WHAT HE AGREED TO. Layne loved music NOT THE FAME OR CONTROL OF HIS ART. After loosing Demri, he didn't want to be in reality. He loved and hurt even more! He was picked on horribly as a child. Jerry was devastated. They were living in a little house with like 15 people trying to make it. Most of the GRUNGE bands are dead many members. He wanted control over his music. THE INDUSTRY CHOKED THEM! THEM PUT OUT WHAT THE MACHINE LET THEM THAT'S WHY HE WAS SO MISERABLE TO. His mom kinda peeved me off saying he knew he had a gift and he wasted it. 😡 To BE THAT ISOLATED AND FOUND 2 WEEKS AFTER YOUR GONE 6'1 88 PDS DECOMPOSING😢 YOU DON'T HAVE A HEART TO NOT HAVE EMPATHY! MENTAL ILLNESS IS A KILLER!
HE HAS GONE DOWN AS ONE OF THE GREATS!

To me, their sound is a mixture of where heavy groove is meshed with blues, dipped in sludge, rubbed with gritty sandpaper, and then vocally intertwined with a dynamic front man that had quite a unique tone range. Topped off with a sprinkling of with the most complimentary of harmonies. What more could a person want? -I think they left no stone unturned.

The vocals and especially the harmonizing is epic on this song(and many others AIC tunes) between Layne and Jerry, they were SO effen good at perfecting these beautiful harmony, and then slightly mixin it up a bit through the song. BTW this venue, MTV Unplugged was/is a national treasure because so many bands from many genres had performances worthy of being nominated and accepted to theUS library of congress to be preserved for ever because it is considered a US history and culture treasure. The great Louie Armstrong I believe has at least 2 songs/performances that are forever etched in history cause they are at the US library of congress.

Depression for this young man appears to be his main issue. Losing his girl was the straw, that broke him, I feel. Everytime I watch him I just say to myself “Awe buddy”.
Anyone who has experienced depression this bad can understand that pain…
    His band suffered, I’m sure…Jerry for sure…
Sympathy and Empathy is what I feel…it makes you wish you could have been there for him!
However, what a hauntingly, beautiful way to express those feelings!

respect to you both frm over the pond in UK. my sister and brother and myself are all heavy metal addicts. People call AIC's a grunge band, but, they are the types who never listened to all their records. They were always a heavy metal band. We all find it still hard to watch their MTV Unplugged performance without the tears returning. Layne had the most powerful voice ever in rock,... and Cantrel penned the most intense emotional records ever created in rock. Quite honestly,... Layne and Jerry, created the same magic together,... on a par with Lennon and McCartney whenever they met up.

The song was written, as was about 80% of Alice In Chains music, by Jerry Cantrell.
He wrote this song about an ex girlfriend.
He’s gone on to admit, although he wanted to be the front man of AIC , Layne Staley’s voice was the one he was looking for to sing his music.
Layne did write and collaborate will Jerry Cantrell but make no mistake, Jerry Cantrell was the driving force behind the band that was Alice In Chains.
Layne and fellow grunge front man and iconic singer songwriter Chris Cornell can fly with the Angels that was their voices. I am in no way saying that Layne’s voice wasn’t incredible. Layne’s voice gave the music the feelings that we all can relate with.
The brightest stars always burn the fastest.
    RIP Layne Staley
    Rip Chris Cornell

Another pitch for, "It Ain't Like That" Stolen comment:
"IT AIN'T LIKE THAT came out of a riff that guitarist Jerry Cantrell cited as a cool mistake. The lyrics could be traced back to the band's disillusionment with Los Angeles. They were wide-eyed kids from Seattle headed to Los Angeles - the city of angels. When they got to Los Angeles, it was not what they expected. The Sunset Strip that had been the haunt of Van Halen, The Doors, Motley Crue, Poison, and Guns N’ Roses was nothing like the club circuit they played in Seattle.
The 1980s music scene that clubs on the Sunset Strip thrived on for a decade was dying out. Compared to the Sunset Strip in 1989-90, the Central Tavern looked like a nightclub in the Ritz Hotel. The lyric: Sign the deal, set in motion / Smaller fish, so huge the ocean had not been a more appropriate description of their situation.
IT AIN'T LIKE THAT (from the Facelift album) and WOULD? (that showed up on the Dirt album) appeared on the Singles soundtrack because Seattle, Washington as big as the town is, musically it's a small town. All the bands that came out of the Seattle scene knew each other and went to see each other play the club circuit. Cameron Crowe is married to Nancy Wilson of the band Heart and he wanted to make a movie about the Seattle music scene and made Singles where a fictional band, Citizen Dick opened for Alice In Chains. They used It Ain't Like That from the Facelift album and Cameron Crowe gave them money to demo songs... AIC took the money, they demoed the 6 acoustic songs that are on SAP EP and two songs Rooster and Would? that ended up on the Dirt album. Cameron Crowe picked through the songs and used Would? out of the bunch. Jerry thought the song was strong enough to be included on the Dirt album and that's how Would? ended up on the Singles soundtrack and the same version ended up on Dirt.
Whenever you see Bad Animals Studios in the liner notes, at the time the album was recorded, Bad Animals Studios was owned by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.
Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.

Haha, he really didn't want to make any mistakes. It was very important to him. As you can see there's a ton of words to get right. It's not the hardest song to belt out but I bet it's extremely hard to cover because it's pretty fast paced and you gotta remember the words and make everything fit right. I mean I've heard people cover AIC songs but they don't attempt this one, I've noticed, even though everyone loves it. I think the song's about their record label telling them how and when to make music for them.

There is another MTV Unplugged song I'd like you guys to look at. One of the best Unplugged songs that I've heard is Kiss "I Still Love You". There are so many that think that Kiss is not very good, once you listen to this song it will change your mind.
