Great job you guys! Thanks for taking us along! Current understanding about the creation of the canyon is that it was once the bottom of the ocean, and the land in that area (for 200+mi) has been pushed upward, and is now a large mountain. 7,000' elevation on the south rim, and 8,000' elevation on the north rim. As the land was rising, it was torn apart, creating the canyon. If you take the bus ride out to Hermits Rest (from the bus stop near the Bright Angel Trail Head) you can look around in the area of the Hermits Rest Trail Head, and see fossils of the sea creatures and plants, that used to be on the bottom of the ocean. The Ranger led tours at Hermits Rest will tell you the same thing, and show you pictures of what the creatures looked like. If you look at the large 3D maps of the land, in the visitor center, and elsewhere, it makes sense that the area is basically the top of a very large (in diameter) mountain, that had enough force put on it, that it sort of tore apart at the top. If you take the drive from the south rim, around to the north rim, you get to see where the "crack" starts, and it totally makes sense.

Thank you for posting this! I winced every time he said the Colorado River formed the canyon.

The camera. Nice work. It's a brutal hike with or without the VCR. 😁

Thanks for sharing! I did this hike last July 2020. Started at 7am. Made it to Colorado River by around 10:00am. Left the river for ascent at around 10:30am and it was over 100F already. Took around 6hrs to hike back to the ridge and the last mile took close to 2hrs. Temperatures were around 105F from 12pm on and some hikers I passed up on the ascent were seriously suffering. Not for the uninitiated. Need to be prepared with lots of water and food/electrolytes and be in relatively good hiking shape.

@@kayleighsparks we would highly recommend some SPF performance clothing, sunscreen, plenty of water, a sawyer water filter and I would start as early as possible. During the summer it can get hot enough to melt your shoes. I would want to get as much done as you can before it gets to hot. There are few water sources. One of them wasn't running when we were there, so check the park website. They post when the water sources are down for maintenance.

My friends and I made the mistake of making that hike in one day as well but with several differences: It was late May (in the sun almost all day), we left at noon, we each had a bottle of water and granola bar with us. It was 30 years ago so the only place to refill on water was Indian Gardens - none of those other structures were there back then (if my memory serves). It was dark and cold by the time we got out and we still have mental scars from that hike. You hit the nail on the head with the description of 'a treadmill on it's steepest incline for 10 miles' - just brutal.
I took my wife and son there earlier this week (we're from Indiana) and we stayed on the rim trail but I could point out Bright Angel and described out difficult that was. We all heard the ranger say 'we pull more people out of here your age' and I believe it now - still can't believe our hubris at age 22...
Thanks for the cool video and bringing back some great, but painful, memories!

I did the same thing 3 years ago at the age of 21. Left around 10am. Got back for the last bus. Thought I was going to die. Imagine you are dead tired, and then you have 10 miles to go. It’s a mental game. 😂

The best advice we got about that hike was off a sign. "Going down is optional, going up is mandatory." Are you doing it in one day or are you camping at the bottom?

Hiking My Feelings one day! We booked a cabin at the top of bright angel so that’ll be our goal coming back up :) we like to “run” down trails, so we’re hoping that’ll shave some time off, and then enjoy it more at the bottom. Just gotta get my mind in the right spot for the return back up! Ha. We hiked down to the 3 mile rest area last year, but that was an unexpected and unplanned adventure lol

We did it early November, which was perfect. Because of the position of the Sun, we were in the shade for most of the hike. The temperatures were good. It was around freezing when we started, but as the Sun comes up and you descend in altitude, it got considerably warmer. I can't imagine doing this in the warmer months.

Early November. Spent most of the hike is the shade due to the Sun's position. 👍
