You seem to know what your talking about, so here is a question I cannot find much info online about: if one would try to use a netapp expansion device such as this exact one, and feed it connectivity from, for example, freenas via its own dedicated HBA, would this play nice for a cost effective expansion chassis outside of the netapp family of storage systems, or would it refuse to work?

It'll work. Some UA-camrs have done videos about that and they are using it in the exact way you are describing.
