Loading 20mm Tungsten Ammo into Phalanx CIWS' Magazine Drum

  • U.S. Navy sailors reload 20mm tungsten ammunition(offloading the dummy rounds at left and loading the tungsten ones(red sabots) at right) into the magazine drum of a Phalanx Closed-in Weapons System (Phalanx CIWS) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
    Phalanx CIWS is a close-in weapon system for defense against incoming threats such as small boats, surface torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and helicopters.
    Phalanx CIWS mounts fire at a rate of 3,000 rounds per minute and have the magazine drum capacity of 1,550 rounds. The velocity of the rounds fired is about 3,600 feet per second or 1,100 m/s.
