- In short, my 2009 BMW 535i with X-Drive is currently down for some time. N54's have are notorious for catastrophic engine failure happening due to belts being shredded and then getting sucked into the motor by breaking the crank seal. This is part 1 of a few videos that will explain what's happening as I go through the proper repair process to get my BMW back on the road and running reliably once again!

yup my 335i unalived itself with belt snapping due to a coolant a oil leak , which i addressed 1 week before it snapped
Same thing just happened to my 328. Belt broke due to oil leak. Ripped out main oil seal and was apparently sucked into engine...as I quickly got a “low oil pressure” warning light. Figured my oil pickup tube is clogged with belt bits. I’ll be tearing into it soon. Not looking forward to it.
That's unfortunate. Since the low oil pressure light came on, it would be a good idea to cut open the oil filter to see if any metal bits are in it. Also if you can, plastigauge the rod bearings to see if they're still within spec.
Mom drove her 528i 3 miles after hard steering because steering fluid leak slipped belt gone to shreds. Thanks for videos. I have to make extra check. May check back to your info.
really appreciate the information had the same thing happen to my car but I had it towed and now it's time to get in there and find out how much damage I've done
Sorry to hear! It's a crappy situation!
i just bought a car like this and this i would recommend getting out as much material as you can and then let it sit for 3 months the oil will weaken the belt inside and the timing chain will break it up after that change you oil after 400 miles then again at 500 then 600 800 900 just keep doing that until you feel like you oil pump is safe
Alex Govoru cool
So what happened to your car?
I worked in a bmw shop one time this 535i came in looking like a locomotive, oil in the intake and in exhaust.. turbo failed miserably. It was a bitch to replace, the little screws for the coolant and oil lines,oh yeah loved doing those
Took forever, but got it done, felt good cuz the thing worked after and werent no leaks
It is definitely a pain and a half to do! That's my next project with this one. 88,000mi and the turbos have failed. But to be fair, I was pushing them well over their designed rating.
Same thing happened to me but I got lucky and it didn’t breach the seal all the way. There’s one piece of the belt left that’s stuck but won’t budge. Should I give it some more muscle or should it come right out with the seal remover tools?
I'd say if there's any belt that broke the seal, even if it' didn't break all the way, you'll definitely need to replace the seal. The seal removal tool should be able to get it out.
Had same shit on a 2010 535i xdrive I bought with low oil pressure but dropped oil pan and was able to clean it but looks like front seal has small leak......
That's such a pain. You may need to redo the seal. I can't stand how expensive the sealant and primer are either.
yea this happened to me i found some in the crank seal what steps should i take im buying a new pulley system car starts is the only plus side i put a new belt on and p0012 code popped up
Did anyone with this issue ACTUALLY find belt pieces IN the engine and pieces in the drained oil?
Yes. You can see it in Part 3 here: ua-cam.com/video/nInM0nghGJU/v-deo.html
@@FoulNewsthank you for these vids man, my belt just shredded like as I’m typing this I just got home, I’m praying belt didn’t get sucked in but if it did you got me covered it looks like if I don’t sell the car, pray for me please😁🥲
Learned my lesson the hard way now I bought the N54 Crankseal plate from Oxwerkz
Sucky lesson for sure, but the plate can be a life saver! I still check my belt weekly due to paranoia lol
@@FoulNews Its also an expensive lesson
Wow that really sucks. Did you ever fix this car?
Sure did! Now the turbos are shot lol. That'll be a series in the future as well :)
@@FoulNews Was the engine salvageable or did you get a new used engine? How many miles on the turbos?
@@BIMMERZEITT Engine turned out okay. There's some wear on the cams and ledges, bearings looked okay, but slightly worn. It pretty much got aged a bit due to oil starvation, so when it goes finally, it goes. However compression and leakdown are good. Turbos are stock with 86k miles on them, but also they've been on 22psi on e40 for a while, so that has worn them down quite a bit lol.
@@FoulNews haha wow I will dig into some of your other videos then to check out the car. My 335i has 184k and it is stock. Might MHD flash it soon
@@BIMMERZEITT Thanks! I'll have some more cool stuff up as soon as I can for N54. Yeah, I'd say go for it. MHD is awesome, just make sure your maintenance kept on top of and you've done all supporting mods.
Same thing happened to my wife’s e90.. Unfortunately we had a shady mechanic try to fix it and he only made it worst... I now have a reputable guy working on it and should get it back tomorrow. Almost $5000 set back... Yikes.. I just thought about it.. Probably should have junked it but my wife loves the car sooooooooo.. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your next video...
I'm sorry to hear that, that's really unfortunate! That's a lot of money, but hopefully once it's fixed it'll be good for quite a long time. Thank you, I'm still waiting on a shop to have space to let me use their lift, but I'm hoping to have some sort of update this week.
How do you really prevents from happening?
Crank seal belt guard and ensuring maintenance is properly done will prevent it.
don't buy a bmw. lol
Any Update ?? Just had my belt snap 2008 bmw 335i
Sorry to hear. Yeah part 2 and 3 are up on the channel. I have to edit and upload parts 4 and 5 (final part) this weekend!
Also feel free to message me if you have any questions on the process
Question , before taking the crank pulley off , did you see the strings of the belt with the pulley on ?
Not after I yanked what was left of the belt off. It was only after I removed the pulley that I saw some bits of belt through the crank seal.
Foul News It just happened to me , but hopefully when I take the pulley off I don’t see the the seal fucked , After the battery light turned on , I stopped and went directly home about mile drive , all pulleys look healthy so if there’s no belt I’ll slap on a belt and take it to a shop
@@tonyrodriguez1622 ah, sorry to hear. Definitely check the crank seal, it isn't something that you'd want to risk. Good luck, hopefully yours is still in tact!
Tony Rodriguez any update bro happened to me & it died on me & had to get it towed
Sneaker Reviews Took crank pulley off and saw no belt inside crank seal , slapped on a new belt and oil filter housing gasket and car is running like new , if you strands of belt near the pulley most likely it’s been digested
Would I need to remove inlets or dci for just replacing belts and tensioner?
It's possible to replace the belt without removing the front inlet or DCI, but it makes it much harder. To remove the pulleys, you'll need to remove the front intake filter and inlet, which should take you about 5 mins to do if you already have the fan and oil cooler out of the way.
Foul News ahh ok I will probably do that, I’m currently stuck in removing the t45 tensioner pulley bolt, I think I actually stripped it. What should I do?
Tony Trinh If it’s stripped, I’d recommend going to the next size Torx bit and tapping it in with a hammer. I had to do that for my tensioner as well. I think it was a t47 I beat into the slot then I was able to turn it.
Foul News did you have to do that with the radiator off I’m just worried I don’t have enough room to hit it with a hammer.
@@tonytrinh5815 I left the radiator in. I only removed the oil cooler and fan.
535i n55 engines don't have this serpentine belt issues where it gets
sucked into the motor! lol n55 engines fixed lots of n54 issues...
It can be done bro
N54 Lord Yup, not looking forward to the job though. Hoping I’ll be able to start it next week, I’ll film the process too.
Got a 2008 bmw 535xi, wasnt that badd to change the crank pulley. Its just taking off the oil cooler, fan, and oil pan 🤦🏽♂️
BrookieSmooth Yeah to get the crank pulley off wasn’t really that bad at all, but getting that oil pan off is something I’m not looking forward to.
I have the same problem after belt shredded into engine now it won’t start, can you please help me telling me what to do, I’m in Montreal.!
What conditions happen when you go to start it? You'll need to remove the crank pulley to see if the belt got passed the crank seal.
Foul News yes I removed it and the belt passed the crank seal, i see pieces of belt in oil pan and in timing chain, I cleaned around the timing chain but the engine still won’t start
@@MegaPapout Does the motor turn over at all? Can you rotate the crank with a ratchet or breaker bar?
Foul News yes but it like little heavy to turn .!
@@MegaPapout If you can still rotate it, the motor is not seized. How long was it run for after the belt snapped? Did you also pull the oil pan to remove the belt from the oil pickup tube? What other symptoms occur when you try to start it?
Pray for Foul News. 1 Like=1 Prayer
Thank you, that's already helping.
Just happens to me 3 days ago for the 2nd time
Ryan Gonzalez that sucks man! I hope the new Oxwerkzperformance crank seal plate I ordered about two weeks ago comes in this week to prevent it from getting sucked in again!
Damn i liked my BMW now that this has happened, its problematic.
i just bought a car like this and this i would recommend getting out as much material as you can and then let it sit for 3 months the oil will weaken the belt inside and the timing chain will break it up after that change you oil after 400 miles then again at 500 then 600 800 900 just keep doing that until you feel like you oil pump is safe
I removed all the belt pieces in videos after this one. I throughly inspected the timing chain, cams, oil pickup, oil pump, and oil passages. There was no belt material left after I finished, so when doing the job correctly, there's no need to let it sit.
Foul News I bought one that was sitting lol pulled out the drain plug out in a camera fount sons belt material flushed it out and changed my oil like crazy it worked out for me
Dont burn down your garage...lol
It would make for a great thumbnail though 😂
535i n55 engines don't have this serpentine belt issues where it gets
sucked into the motor! lol n55 engines fixed lots of n54 issues...
You're quite wrong about that. All N54, N55 and N52 engines have this same issue.
