  • Here we are diving deep into Stephen Sondheim's final musical, "Here We Are," to uncover the rich and evocative music of Act Two. Despite its reputation for having "little to no songs," Act Two is filled with musical references and hidden gems that pay homage to Sondheim's earlier works such as West Side Story, Sunday in the Park with George, and Passion.
Join us as music educator and Broadway Maven co-host Mateo Chavez Lewis demonstrates how the music of Act Two is far more intricate and impactful than it appears. Through detailed analysis and captivating examples, you'll see why the second act deserves more recognition and appreciation.
    In this video, you will:
    • Explore the musical nuances of Act Two of Here We Are
    • Learn how Sondheim cleverly integrates motifs from his previous masterpieces
    • Gain insights into the thematic and musical continuity in Sondheim's work

Wow. Mateo, you're incredible. I saw this on Broadway, and heard Passion, but not Sunday or WSS. You helped me understand a LOT more of what I saw onstage. THANK YOU!!!

I think your “Children and Art” and “Maria” ideas are stretches, BUT bravo on the connection of the two book passages! yes, that’s totally in line with the satire of the rich in “Here We Are.” I’m convinced.

Thank you! It's about time that people start realizing that this show is Sondheim's final goodbye and thank you to his audience. I left the show curious to why no one else could hear this. Soooo many references to his other shows. I think it will ultimately be regarded by many as one of his top works. I eagerly await more scholarly deep dives.

Well, that was amazing! The connections between "I Read" and "Shine" just blow me away. Many people have said that they hear resonances of other Sondheim's work in this one, and I have been so eager to have someone guide me to them. Thank you for this, Mateo!

Thanks so much! Your insights are so fascinating. I hear the melodies but can't always idenitify why they are so familiar! Hope Tommy Rhoades is going well! Any updates?

There’s a lot of saying that these are “identical” melodies. The melody of the opening of “I Read” is very delicate and intricate - there are many more accidentals in “I Read” than in “Shine.” It’s thornier. I’d say it’s more different than similar in actual melodic content. Same about the “Company” reference. Those melodies are much more different.
