    Episode Notes:
    1. Price can range incredibly depending on where you get your games and their condition. The prices in the video are of course, generalized.
    2. There are many games that are close in price to these, but I needed to keep the counts to 10 per region to keep the runtime manageable.
    3. I know the Japanese and North American markets much better than I know the PAL territories. Most of my PAL knowledge came much later and without the experience of being there to see it firsthand.
    4. There are also some really expensive peripherals for the platform.
    5. There was a rare Japanese Aiwa boombox radio that had a built in Sega Mega Drive and Mega CD that can cost $1000's today. The Tera Drive, a computer/Mega Drive hybrid, is also $1000's.
    6. If you find Ebay to be a pain, look at places like Facebook and join collectors groups. There you can make deals and trade for the games you need. Sometimes with much better results.
    7. Don't assume your game is legit just because it has a Sega PCB. Cheap Chinese knockoffs are obvious. The assholes truly trying to trick you, not so much.

When I first got back into retro gaming on real hardware around 2018, I balked at the idea of paying $200 for a 21" Sony Trinitron WEGA CRT with component input, and almost didn't do it. Boy how times have changed. I've gotten more value out of that CRT than anything else in my game room, and sadly seeing a $200 or more asking price on just a single retro game alone has become far, far too common. Sadly I don't own a single game mentioned in the video, and likely never will in the future.
That being said there are still quality Genesis games for dirt cheap out there, even in our hyperinflated 2022 market. The Sega 6-Pak is a fantastic value, Busters Hidden Treasure and Animaniacs are sorely overlooked, and The Lion King is great as well.

So I’m definitely going to find a good spot for it and figure out why it’s not powering on. Definitely worth keeping with the way it sounds! I have noticed since 2017 prices for original print runs of Mega Drive/Genesis games have gone up. The most expensive game I ever bought with my own money was ''Sonic Triple Trouble'' on the Master System, it set me back $200 dollars as there was no cheap repro from China to go with. It's no wonder why most Mega Drive/Genesis fanatics these days are opting to get EverDrives and or cheap repros from China that cost only a mere few dollars for the exact same game. Those prices are disgusting plain and simple and I would never pay those prices when you can get those games for almost nothing if you know where to look. The way I do it is I purchase a cheap repro from China loose without a case and pay another $15.00 dollars to a mate of mine who owns a small business making up original custom cases for games and pay him to make a custom case for that particular game I bought. The end result gives the game a shiny new feel with the case like it's brand new (well it literally is) and even with the case it costs no where near those insane prices mentioned in the video.
Why pay $300 or more on just one game when you can get a Mega SD or a Pro for the same price and own the entire collection? I've seen Panarama Cotton go for $2000 AU dollars on ebay and i've also seen it go for $14.50 AU dollars from ebay in the form of a brand new reproduction cartridge from China and that's with the English patch. M.U.S.H.A. sells for $3000 dollars on ebay while a repro cost only $20 bucks, screw original Sega pcb boards, think with your heads guys and not your obsessions with owning every single game.

I haven't looked up Genesis prices since before the pandemic. After that I got distracted by Gamecube and PS3 price increases. I'm in shock at these prices. These are Sega Saturn prices! Or for all I know what Sega Saturn prices were last I knew.
Certainly makes me feel old. I remember late 90s/early 00s going to flea markets and seeing Genesis games (granted most were cart only) for a quarter or five for a dollar. I hadn't re-bought the genesis yet at that time, but I wish I had or at least still had my original, so I would have had a reason to buy in bulk back then.

@@matthewnikitas8905 Being a year after I wrote that, for the moment as I'm writing this, I've noticed prices of games across the board have gone down. Not dramatically but definitely a notable difference and slowly it's been continuing.
I also saw between then and now that those ridiculous auction house companies that were artificially inflating gaming prices (like that B.S. of Super Mario selling for a million) have been losing money like crazy. Some as much as a 90 percent loss. I think that nonsense is at an end and the gaming market is healing itself as a result. Just my hypothesis but it can't just be a coincidence those two things have been happening at the same time.

    • @matthewnikitas8905
      @matthewnikitas8905 8 місяців тому +2

@@chaospoet That was a big part of the inflationary prices was the fact you had these sealed games “grading” services arbitrarily giving these things a certain value that wasn’t really reflective of real life, and many people would in turn think their things were worth that amount when that wasn’t necessarily the case. Re sellers also didn’t help the situation at all and definitely contributed to inflationary prices. As a collector I’m just glad to see the market start to stabilize itself a little bit.

Most collectors also use ROMs when they want to play retro games, just for the sake of better accessibility and ease with modern TVs; but to them it's not the same has having something physical to show off and display, so they aim to have the best of both worlds.

I lucked into Musha, Monster World IV & Gaiares all complete for under $150 each, buying straight from Japanese sites. But games I thought were absurdly priced last year at $350, I now look back on and wish I'd grabbed before they hit $500, $600. Vampire Killer, Alien Soldier, Gley Lancer, I'd love to get these but not sure I'll ever be able to. I'd still definitely encourage anyone on the fence to get into it, though. Even in the North American market, there's a lot of really good Genesis games that can still be had under $50, and some really great ones that haven't hit $100 yet. Thankfully I started my collection over 20yrs ago, and in that time I've picked up many games very cheap that now sell for a small fortune.
