Are Ice Cream Trucks in Trouble?

  • The ice cream truck is a classic way to beat the summer heat. But with inflation hitting record highs, some ice cream truck owners are struggling to stay afloat. Diesel gas is $7 a gallon in some states, vanilla ice cream is $13 a gallon and the cost of sprinkles doubled to $60 a box. One New York Italian Ices owner says he stopped his ice cream trucks because of rising costs. The North American Ice Cream Association says "The ice cream truck, unfortunately, is becoming a thing of the past.”

Feel bad for these guys, I knew a guy who used to drive an ice cream truck. He was a Vietnam veteran, apparently he saw a lot of really messed up stuff we were doing there and when he got back all he wanted to do was bring joy to people so he bought an ice cream truck and did that all the way up until he died a few years back

As a new york resident, I saw the trucks everywhere. Parked in front of schools, in front of playgrounds, them playing music to get children lining up. I still see them strolling around, however the prices have risen from around 2.49 to 4.15 depending on what you get. Flavors taste very different and the quality has decreased. For instance, the chocolate ice cream was my favorite flavour, however recently just changed to a bitter coco powder taste. Truly heartbreaking, it was part of my childhood.

Getting ice cream from a van was the best thing in the world when I was a kid, but it almost never happened cuz I was always told that it was too overpriced, that we could buy an entire tub of ice cream at the store for almost the same price, etc etc. That being said, I still cherish the few memories I had as a kid sprinting to the truck yelling “ICE CREEEEAM!!!”

I remember we had an ice cream truck come through our apartment complex as a kid, but it was like. Super broke area, so the most expensive thing at that truck was only about $3-4 for the super nice ice cream bars. But they had a dollar menu for the kids whose parents just couldn't afford it.

We even keep money on our front foyer table for when we hear it. Also, I work fast food, and I know we've raised our already high prices. This is just sad, I remember this ice cream truck that would pull up to my grandparents house almost everyday, and whenever we heard it coming my siblings and I along with the kids of the neighborhood would find any sort of change to get a nice treat. The Ice Cream we usually get was $1.50 growing up which was either a vanilla/chocolate cone covered in sprinkles or a SpongeBob popsicle. Now fast forward to 2022, its been more than 7-9 years since I last ordered from that truck and he was charging $4.50 for that exact order which is ridiculous. I bought it anyways and I personally thought something was off, the soft serve just didn't taste as good or even well made as it has when I was younger. It was nice to see that truck again after so long, but it was also sad to see the once popular and nostalgic truck struggling, still holding on in this day and age by doubling up the prices.

When I was a kid, i thought it was a rare treat to get ice cream from the ice cream truck.
When I was older I found out that there was an ice cream truck that would go through our neighbourhood consistently later in the evening, so once I was in bed my parents and the neighbours would usually grab ice cream once the kids were asleep.

I lived for the ice-cream truck back in the day. Holy cow, have not thought about this in a long time. Brings back great memories with my family and my old home.

What's sad is that when fuel prices go down, the price on foods doesn't. This has been going on for decades. Food prices go up, then when fuel prices go down, the savings turn into profit, as opposed to being passed back to the consumer.

This explains why I haven’t seen any in a few years - I used to buy a ton from them every time they came into my neighborhood

I remember it being like 2-3$ per frozen treat with an ice-cream truck, in my town when I was a child.
Really shows how sad of a state we're in if a cone or frozen treat is about six bucks each.

Man when I was a kid, everyday around 5:30 or ice cream truck would come. Even though my mother would tell me no everytime, I still love it when I heard the Jack in the box song.
Now where my family lives, we. Used to have an Ice Cream truck come by. I would always give them money to buy stuff. But we haven't seen the ice cream in a long time.

So sad we're gonna be telling our kids about ice cream trucks like a distant memory
