FIVE Things You Should Have Before Bringing Your DACHSHUND PUPPY Home

  • In this video I cover five top things to think about before bringing your puppy home. I have found most things on Amazon here but the two extra dog coat companies are also listed below:
    Just to note - with regards the bones - go for the larger knuckle type bones not the thinner rib bones as these may splinter I believe - always review items yourself before purchasing for your dog, I am not a vet or dog trainer.
    Equafleece - www.equafleece.co.uk/products...
    Woodlands - www.woodlandsdogcoats.co.uk/
    Amazon Links - ua-cam.com/users/redirect?even...
    Our History
    We were only getting one puppy, Gracie but then fell in love with Sapphire, Saffy for short and couldn't let her go. Mum is a black and tan and Dad is a chocolate dapple. Gracie is a silver dapple and Saffy is a silver dapple with white. We are fully aware of double dapple issues but she was not bred from two dapples and is very healthy so far. We would not breed from her either.
    I will be doing twice weekly videos on their progress and training and any new and fun things they get up to. Subscribe to support the channel and thanks for watching!

    My dachshund is 17 years old now and still going strong with no IVDD!!! I know i am unbelievably lucky, and I've found myself going through all of these tips through years of trial and error.
    I'm glad you are using this guide to prepare others while they still have their puppies! As long as you protect their backs (and keep their noses out of trouble) they will be in your life for a very, very long time!

      It's a very worrying thing IVDD, I'm going to talk a bit more but it's only based on my research, lovely to hear about your little one and 17 is a fantastic age ❤️ x

      My doxie girl lived two months past her 17th birthday, and like yours she had no trouble with IVDD. She was very healthy I only fed her homemade dog food, the recipe was one put together by a vet with supplements. She died of old age, she had a very happy life with lots of love, and snuggles. I miss her so very much she was my heart.❤

      I've had 3 doxies and none have had a problem with IVDD. I think it may be more of a genetic problem. But that doesn't mean not to take steps to protect their backs. Rosie was 18.5 when I lost her, Cinnamon is 16 this month and Jasmine is 12ish. Cinnamon is pretty blind due to cataracts but she still navigates OK.

    I agree with all of this… We haven’t had too many serious issues with our 16 week old black & tan brothers chewing, they do get into things they shouldn’t sometimes but we quickly divert their attention to their chews and toys, we also use bitter apple to keep them from chewing what they shouldn’t and it works well.
    Speaking of them burrowing, we got ours tons of blankets and also carpeted cat scratchers that they can get inside of that they love playing in. It’s like they’re getting into a hole.
    They also get up in the morning around 7am to go out to potty and go back to sleep for a couple hours also. We also are using collars that so far they’ve done great with.
    We’ve used the Gentle Leads on our big dogs for pulling and they’ve been a game changer, but we never had to use them on our Doxie’s. None of them have ever pulled, in fact they usually want to be carried for their walk, lol.
    We’re curious about feeding raw, we’ve never done that but want to with our new boys. I’ll be checking out what videos you have about feeding raw.

      Had docsons all my life, they are truly the best breed of dog. Just be mindful of their backs, be patient but persistent with the boundaries, and be ready to have a little heater always by you or on you! :) And maybe consider getting two rather then one. They have bad separation anxiety and tend to be lonely by themselves which prompts them to act out. It really does help them to have a friend

    They may be strong chewers but their teeth are not necessarily that strong. I used to give mine bones to chew until Rosie got a slab fracture. She had to have the tooth pulled and the vet cautioned against giving them bones. Just something to be aware of. And yes there are small blankets everywhere. They have steps by the couch and a ramp by the bed. Also doxies have a tendency to become overweight so one needs to guard against that. But they are a joy to have in the house.

    • @scarlettzo
      @scarlettzo 5 місяців тому

      I have had the same experience with my adorable Dachl, Siggi, now 5 years old. I used to give him bones to chew. Three months ago when he was being inspected for return travel from Europe to the US the vet discovered that BOTH his upper back teeth were fractured, one a few months previously and the other right at the time of inspection. Both teeth had to be pulled. He is fine now, but it hurts me to know that Siggi must have had toothache. And, unbelievably, he never gave a sign that he was in pain. I just shudder to think of it. In our case I think one thing that might have done the damage was a piece of a deer antler, a real one bought in a pet shop, which I remember as being heavy and as hard as concrete. I clean his teeth with an enzyme toothpaste. My only problem with that is that we have a little battle to get the toothpaste on his teeth before he licks it all off to eat it!!!

    • @bethsojourner6798
      @bethsojourner6798 5 місяців тому

      @@scarlettzo My Rosie didn't act like she was in pain either. The vet found it during a cleaning appointment and pulled the tooth. She was fine afterwards. Rosie lived to 18.5. Now her younger sister, Cinnamon 16, is starting to go down hill. She was not doing well the last 2 days but today she seems better. I need to call the vet to help determine the best course of action. Hope you and Siggi are doing well. 😊😊

    Another thing about dachshunds is their oral hygiene is really important. They have a tendency to build up tartar very easily. He LOVES playing with towels and blankets.
      His instincts leave me in awe. He can pick a creep out of a crowd in a heartbeat.
      The coats and sweaters need to cover their bellies, too. A lot of pavement grime gets tossed yp by their massive feet. Bud is a 17 pound standard longhaired.
      Harness is vital. They can take off like a rocket at anything that runs. You can also use a sturdy harness to lift them out of trouble with the leash if you need to. I was NOT going to bend down to pick him up and put my face right at mouth level of an angry German Shepherd so I hoisted him straight into my arms and gave the doofus of a shepherd owner a lesson on being a courteous and responsible dog owner. The dog was magnificent. It was a toy, a possession to him, not a companion with it's own wants and feelings. He had no clue how to handle the biggest, best looking German Shepherd I'd seen in nearly 60 years of loving dogs. When I say magnificent I really mean it. Just a pup, too, with no discipline or manners. Massive, gorgeous dog and he was gonna ruin it. Infuriated me and broke my heart at the same time. Poor dog. My golly, that man made me mad! He had no manners, either.

I have one that I allow to go down the stairs because he's very excited and wiggly when I carry him down, fortunately he doesn't know how to go up lol so I carry him up the stairs.

    • @gracieandsapphire
      @gracieandsapphire  7 місяців тому

      In all honesty I would go for a collar whilst they are pups, my two managed to slip backwards out of the little harnesses. Once they are bigger then invest in a tri point one which they can't pull off and always check between the front legs as it rubbed one of my dogs there. Harnesses are definitely good for dogs if they don't pull but ours have now settled into their collars, hope it goes well xx

    Had to put my last weenie down a few years ago:( hardest thing ive ever had to do.. Now i have a boy, 2yrs old hes a red piebald dapple #5 and i love him to death. He also loves me to death. A few things i do are:
    My bed is off the frame and on the floor to make it easier for him to come n go.
    A harness is better for walks too cuz hes stubborn at times and collars choke.
    I dont dress him in cold because our walks are short and it doesn't get that cold here in Roseville California anyway. Lastly he loves tennis balls. My last boy loved rocks. My last female loved nothing but food.:)))
