I was in 9th grade when this sang was released. I used to pull the covers over my head and listen to my transistor radio low so mom couldn't hear. When this song came on, as young as I was, it dug deep in my soul and has stayed there for more than 50 years. It's still in the playlists I made for myself and when it shuffles up I'm instantly transported back to my young self. Timeless song.
Essa música realmente é linda demais, povo norte americano principalmente na decada de 60,70 cantava demais ainda mais esse povo maravilhoso negro que tem uma voz maravilhosa e viva a boa musica
i was stationed at Fort Gordon Georgia laying in my bunk with my transistor radio listening to this song and missing my family and then girlfriend back home, soon after was sent to vietnam
Wonderful Brook Benton song. In December 1970, Mine Division 112, Nha Be Vietnam. I listened to this song and just cried. Homesick and wanted to be home. Thank the Good Lord I'm safe and back home. Love Brook Benton's soothing voice. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you for your service to this country! I thank God that you are safe and back home too. I hope you've had a Blessed and happy life since your Vietnam days. Be Blessed.
One of the most beautiful pop-R&B songs ever. Sexy, romantic, melancholy, all rolled into one. I especially love when BB hits those low, rumbly notes. He poured his heart and soul into it.
I first heard this from Hank Williams Jr., and loved it as a teenager. I later found Brook singing it, and was blown away. I just introduced it to my wife last year, and she downloaded every version she could find - Aaron Neville, Rod Stewart, David Ruffin, etc. There's even a cool instrumental version from Los Straightjackets. Love this song. So simple and rich.
Just passed the 75 mile marker heard this at Atlanta Airport coming home from Nam rain pouring down fogged in and lonely as he'll I'll never forget this song love it still today
Love his amazing voice. What a Natural he was. Thinking of the many people for one reason or another who have never heard him. For me, a child of the 50’s, it still brings warm feelings & beautiful memories. Brook, you were in a class of your own, gone too soon.🌺
I recall hearing the song on the radio back when it came out. It just showed up on a setlist for a gig I'm playing weekend so I'm giving it a more thorough listen. His voice is just wonderful. I'm glad is talent did pass me by. While playing through the song I brought up is wikipedia page to read more about his life. He seemed like he was a good man in addition to his talents as a performer and song writer.
This gentleman knows how to tell a story of his struggles in life, while at the same time singing it so graciously! Beautiful song, Mr. Benton! A great singer, indeed!
When I was a little girl, I remembered this song playing on the radio, and my Mama telling me that this was her favorite song. It’s still my all-time favorite even though I am much older now and my Mama has been gone for many years. When I hear it, it brings back great memories of her. His voice is so soothing.
This man was the hallmark of great vocal range and abilities. This song -- his song -- should be sent out into space so that any alien life form who may be out there can experience a great American voice.
+The Darci 13 The original version by Tony Joe White was quite different. After Benton put his song out White switched to that style and said that sometimes it takes another artist to show the writer just how the song is supposed to be sung.
I cannot help but fully agree with The Darci. Just another number that the universe just seemed to need the Brook-ness to breathe life into ... for whatever reason.
@@TheOriginalRick Yeah, but when Brook sang it, Tony Joe White, to his credit, worked on his own version and upped it a notch or two...ua-cam.com/video/MunWJu1f1-8/v-deo.html
Having spent some formative years growing up on the outskirts of Atlanta---troubled and hard times---violent times with the war in Vietnam and at home---it seemed like it was raining all over this man's world and NOBODY captured those moments like Brook Benton---Masterful singer for those (and these) times!
I agree. I mean how can you not be. With a voice like that. And another, like so many of those great singers from that era, he had a presence about him.
Beautiful song sung by a master vocalist. His smooth deep voice is full of raw emotion!! Just the best!! Thank you Brook, gone from the world but his wonderful music will live forever!!
Such a wonderful singer. Great song written by Tony Joe White (who also wrote "Polk Salad Annie.") I fell in love with Brook when I was 10 via his first hit, "It's Just a Matter of Time," (went to #3 pop and #1 R&B, 1959) which he co-wrote with Belford Hendricks and Clyde Otis. Brook also wrote "A Lover's Question" for Clyde McPhatter. Brook had many hits, but Rainy was his last hit (#4 pop, #1 R&B, 1970). Sadly he died at age 56 in 1988. RIP.
Brook Benton became my favourite with Endlessly in '58. When he recorded this Tony Joe White classic, it was perfection. I saw Brook at the Croydon Fairfield Hall, about the time of Mr Bartender, and his voice blew the sound system out ! Such a powerful voice.
This song is so sad and the music fits it. I most definitely associate it with the fall of 1969, one of the worst times in my life. What a great performance by Brook Benton.
Just brought the CD and I play it all the time (even if it's not raining), but when it is and I'm driving, I just roll with it...very special talent, Brook Benton, who would of thought of this song, love it...stirs my soul every time I hear it.....feel like it's raining all over the world....yeah....it's life and we play the game.....
One of a number of truly classic artists that I grew up listening to via my dad's cassette player in the car - Brook Benton, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole - still love all of 'em!
My fav.song on a rainy night alone. I love when he says; " Moan" of the train. They go so slow out @the farm it takes couple hrs for train to go by in the 🌧️ rain Always made me feel safe❤🎉🎉🎉
My girlfriend (Elizabeth) played this song for me on the telephone in Gelnhausen, Germany (Coleman Kaserne), in the late 60's ,,, I still remember her doing this for me :)
A great time on this earth back then people didn't have much but they had love in their hearts for people the memories cut so deep missing all the great people from this time 😢
The late, great Mr. Brook Benton did not have to dance or move on stage. His unique baritone voice was enough to keep the listener mesmerized! My only regret is that I didn't see him perform LIVE!
Back in 1995 i won a Karaoke Contest singing this song. Im no Brook Benton-But i enjoy singing his songs , Fools Rush In is another Favourite of mine..His duet with Diana Washington are just awesome..

A true underrated soul artist and I miss him too @Terrance Knox.
He is incredible! He sings my favourite Christmas song This Time of the Year - simply the best!
Love him and Dinah Washington together!

Welcome home soldier, glad you made it back
This man's voice was amazing. No one could sing this song like him. I love when he hits his low notes. He was the best. I could listen over and over.
I do listen over and over. This is in my repertoire.
Great voice, great style.
Love this BEAUTIFUL MELODY
Absolutely! His voice touches one us right down to our souls.
Brooke had great dynamic range.
a hauntingly laid back yet deeply soulful performance ... brilliant
I couldnt have worded it better bro!..👌🏾👌🏾
I concur😅😊
It's kind of funny I'm a grown man in my sixties I'm just listening to this beautiful song by Mr Benton makes me cry
Me too 😢
same here. grown man in my fifties. 👍
The nostalgia does it to me. I can remember everything that was going on when I hear this.
Same. What a soulful song

This song is definitely a mood in2022? Who's listening on this rainy night 🌉
Oh, my dear, it's more relevant now than ever.
Just play it over and over again for the next 12 years or so.
No one else compares. Now, in 2017, there's a lot of talent, but, sadly, they lack soul. Brook's talent cannot be learned, it's a gift from God.
And you can't touch this.
Amen unto the A-of-Low.
British R&B singers are the current soulful singers.
I agree with you. There is nothing to compare to the gone legends of our times.May their souls rest in eternal peace. 🙏🙏🙏
Brook Benton, what a beautiful, quality voice !! Just beautiful, quality, baritone, bass voice.
I could listen to this the rest of my life! Lord I hope you let him sing in heaven!
Are you kidding Rob? He's probably leading some of the angel choirs up in Heaven.
Dear GOD, we stand in agreement with the petitions of dear Rob Lawson. WE SECOND THAT VERY PRAYER REQUEST!!!

I agree this man had that rare, deep, calming talent.
So very tru also hits many memories for me tru it does for me to muc

What a voice. Brook Benton was amazing in this live performance. He had this audience an a trans with his voice. Wow.
It's an honour to see this wonderful live version from 1971, thank you! :)
This gentleman knows how to tell a story of his struggles in life, while at the same time singing it so graciously! Beautiful song, Mr. Benton! A great singer, indeed!
Great cover
Tony Joe White wrote it
He was the first to record the song , it's not a cover
Marvellous Brook Benton ! This song is magical in his voice and interpretation !
I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Brook Benton when I worked in the music industry. He was kind, sweet, humble, and wonderful...
Mannn I would have loved to see him gigging live
What a talent. His low voice is stunning.
I wore this record out when my parents weren’t home and the house was empty. I was seven years old. I listen to this song still at least once a week.
This is one of those songs that you play when you're home or somewhere alone, and you just need cry and pour your soul out for a few minutes.
omg I feel the exact same way
Truth.
Thought I was the only person to think that way. Makes me tear up every time 😔
When I was a little girl, I remembered this song playing on the radio, and my Mama telling me that this was her favorite song. It’s still my all-time favorite even though I am much older now and my Mama has been gone for many years. When I hear it, it brings back great memories of her. His voice is so soothing.
This is a flawless live performance... Jeesh!
+Emil Dee agreed!
Stunning performance. So much character, feeling and style.
Man do I miss the soul singers from the 60s and 70s. They were simply some of the most talented singers back then.
This man was the hallmark of great vocal range and abilities. This song -- his song -- should be sent out into space so that any alien life form who may be out there can experience a great American voice.
No one ever does this song as well as he did...... love this song and him singing it......

Watch as Brook sings this awesomely wonderful song, the audience is mesmerized.
We observed that too, dear DDKaraokeOutlaw ... Brook just happens to be eternally 'mesmerising'.
I agree. I mean how can you not be. With a voice like that. And another, like so many of those great singers from that era, he had a presence about him.
What a singer. So loved and missed!
Indeed, dear Charlotte-of-Swinciki ... a singer who is adorably non-replaceable.
I forget how much I love this song and Brook Benton singing it.
My Grandma always asked me to play this when I was a teenager. I am 65 now, and I still remember.
OMG Listen to that voice.....I have always LOVED the way he sang this song.....R.I.P......You were loved by your fans
Was 6 years old in December 1970, but my parents taught me about great music at a very young age, and I'm really glad they did🫶🙏✌️
It really is raining all over the world & flooding!
Beautiful song sung by a master vocalist. His smooth deep voice is full of raw emotion!! Just the best!! Thank you Brook, gone from the world but his wonderful music will live forever!!
Whoa! So sadly underrated and missed.
