I was in 9th grade when this sang was released. I used to pull the covers over my head and listen to my transistor radio low so mom couldn't hear. When this song came on, as young as I was, it dug deep in my soul and has stayed there for more than 50 years. It's still in the playlists I made for myself and when it shuffles up I'm instantly transported back to my young self. Timeless song.

One of the most beautiful pop-R&B songs ever. Sexy, romantic, melancholy, all rolled into one. I especially love when BB hits those low, rumbly notes. He poured his heart and soul into it.

I first heard this from Hank Williams Jr., and loved it as a teenager. I later found Brook singing it, and was blown away. I just introduced it to my wife last year, and she downloaded every version she could find - Aaron Neville, Rod Stewart, David Ruffin, etc. There's even a cool instrumental version from Los Straightjackets. Love this song. So simple and rich.

I recall hearing the song on the radio back when it came out. It just showed up on a setlist for a gig I'm playing weekend so I'm giving it a more thorough listen. His voice is just wonderful. Such a wonderful singer. Great song written by Tony Joe White (who also wrote "Polk Salad Annie.") I fell in love with Brook when I was 10 via his first hit, "It's Just a Matter of Time," (went to #3 pop and #1 R&B, 1959) which he co-wrote with Belford Hendricks and Clyde Otis. Brook also wrote "A Lover's Question" for Clyde McPhatter. Brook had many hits, but Rainy was his last hit (#4 pop, #1 R&B, 1970). Sadly he died at age 56 in 1988. RIP.

What a remarkably beautiful song this is. I feel warm and fuzzy when I hear the late Brook Benton sing this since he first recorded it.

Timelessly warm ... timelessly genteel ... timelessly gentle ... timelessly gentlemanly ... so very timelessly elegant
Dear baritoned-Brook-of-Benton ...to say that you flowingly 'melt' your listener-and-viewer is, oh, an understatement
Depth and sonic and visual beauty
Among other things, do define thee
    OH SO VERY, VERY T-I-M-E-L-E-S-S-L-Y ... ... ... ... !!! !!! !!! ... ...
    Dear publisher A. Presotopi
    A brilliant choice ... ... truly.

In 1967, I was in Georgia. I was training in the U.S. Army, getting ready to deploy to South Vietnam in January 1968. I fondly remember the rainy cold nights in Georgia.
