If someone were to tell me that Ian Anderson was an immortal who had lived through these eras, I'd believe it, no questions asked. Every song he writes is told like a story teller plucked from Medieval times. Even looking in his eyes while he sings this song, it's like he can see the events in front of him. There's never going to be another Ian Anderson
I'm standing here on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark, at 10pm, watching the dark clouds roll in with lightning behind. Listening to Tull. Like any reasonable Viking! BRING ME MY BROADSWORD!
I bought the Broadsword album a while back. It's honestly great from top to bottom. One of the most underrated albums ever. Just a perfect blend of 80s production and Tull's classic sound. This song in particular is one of my favorite JT songs.
My brother worked security at Meriwether Post Pavilion in September of 1982, I was a kid but he brought me home a tour shirt and a backstage pass which I still have all these years later.
What ever 'it' is Ian Anderson has 'it' by the bucket loads. Always a progressive group I just love the stuff that they do. It is proper music. Big thumbs up for this one.
I see a dark sail on the horizon set under a black cloud that hides the sun. Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding. Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman. Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing. Take women and children and bed them down. Bring me my broadsword and clear understanding. Bring me my cross of gold as a talisman. Bless with a hard heart those who surround me. Bless the women and children who firm our hands. Put our backs to the north wind. Hold fast by the river. Sweet memories to drive us on for the motherland.
This video was published excactly on that day when I had to leave my beloved hometown and friends forever. So it‘s very personal for me to watch. Things turned out quite good for me in the end. But beside this, the whole album is a rock classic and wonderful to listen to, ever after 40 years. Seeing Tull at the summernight open air concert in wiesbaden, germany in september 1982 together with neil young‘s live rust performance will be remembered forever. Peace and love, Ulf
Ian Anderson is easily one of the most talented lyricists, vocalists, and all around performers (did I leave out GENIUS with a flute?), Rock has ever seen. I'm one of those guys that like to hear a man SOUND like he's got a pair, rather than screech like a puss... - you know what I mean.
comlinc9 Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Ian Anderson is a multi-talented genius and is still touring to this day. Just remind me, how long did the Beatles last, exactly? I heard him interviewed on a rock music station last week - what a great guy. Down-to-earth, modest and very funny. I bet that preening self-regarding mediocrity McCartney wishes he could have written songs 1% as good as this. Nice to know that talent like Jethro Tull can still survive in this age of depressing musical stagnation.
Ian Thomas I wouldn't call Paul McCartney "depressing musical stagnation". He has written some great stuff. But no doubt Tull is the greater all round musical talent. If speaking of mediocrity, I would not hesitate to name Bob Dylan who I see as the most over-rated of our era.
+Steven W I think Ian Thomas is referring to modern-day acts such as Jason Beiber & Lady Ga Ga.... might as well include rap as depressing musical stagnation.
"I'm one of those guys that like to hear a man SOUND like he's got a pair, rather than screech like a puss... - you know what I mean." That was a dig against Geddy Lee, wasn't it.
i never hear this album of tull, im hearing the song and is super cool, man, the keyboards are incredible, the guitarrist is xtraordinarie as always, the song and the music is really really cool, i will buy next day when i will be in the record shop, i dont gonna hear it here full, i will wait for buy it original...., thanks for the vid, love it....
That's magic: Das müsste der Auftritt sein, den ich damals im Fernsehen sah 😊 und mich in seinen Bann schlug. Seitdem zähle ich Jethro Tull zu meinen Favoriten.
I think I can hear a Roland VP330 on this, which is an absolutely fantastic instrument. I can certainly hear the Polymoog (the brass sound), as I have one myself. What a great line-up.
Caught Ian and the group in the early 80's promoting Broadsword at the Glens Falls Civic center in upstate NY. Also attended the Springfield MA Bursting Out Tour promo for Songs From The Woods in the late 70's-- heard some early Heavy Horses cuts. Amazing.
This is such an incredible story because Ian makes you not just see the story happening now but the history of the protagonist. He was a soldier once. Maybe in the crusades. He came home to be lord of his small holding. He hoped he'd put the ways of war behind him but alas, not to be. And these are more than just pirates. Normal pirates don't come under a cloud of darkness, thus the need for the cross as well as the sword
A young kid saw me wearing my Jethro tull shirt and said hey I like that but I don't like rock 'n' roll only techno! In a way I feel sorry for these kids who will never know the greatness of Ian Anderson!!!
Perhaps if techno kid watched some early Tull concerts, he'd be so mesmerized with Ian's performance, his mind would have been blown and he'd leave techno behind for Tull.
Jeff Lamb his dumb musical brain will soon realise and catch up in a few years, a lot of young are finding out and realising that the old stuff is better now because of UA-cam and other streaming format.
I love tull you can tell by Ians lyrics that he's not only talented but has a good command of words he should have been a poet, and a damn good one too
Note that Anderson’s mother was English and he’s spent most of his successful life growing up in England. The success of Jethro Tull owed much to the fantastic English musicians Anderson had around him. So less of the daft William Wallace association please.
A much underrrated song by JT and I. A., but nevertheless one of my absolute favourites out of Tull's huge repertoire. An awesome combination of medieval history, suitable lyrics and a electryfying and humming sound with a pounding drum part, as we even had to miss Ian's flute in this song. 👍👍🎸🥁
Drummer on this the late Bruce Rowland said he didn't enjoy the occasion of working with jethro Tull and only did it as a favour for his mate in fairport convention Dave pegg .
I'd love to know what is going through Ian's head with he gesticulates so, 0:10 ,during his concerts ... it is the weirdest series of movements and must represent something in the way he visualized music.
Let me tell you something Ian does not Lip Sync. I was on the tour with them. He can be a lot of things, but not a faker. He is full of energy when he is out on the stage. So, you should restrain your tongue; you can get in trouble for something like that, it is a defaming statement and a Lie, which can get you for that, also.
1982 STAVO PARTENDO PER LE VACANZE, Saputo dell' uscita dell'album non ho potuto fare a mano di comprarlo per metterlo in cassetta( stereo 7 ) per ascortarlo in vacanza.
Saw Jethro Tull in concert that year. By far, one of my favourite bands. I do wish Ian and company would do another album as driven and magical as Broadsword, Song from the wood, Stormwatch.
Arguably, FLYING COLOURS is the best song on this album. a shame I cannot find a live version of it.. One of those albums that I love to play end to end.

Been playing this song quite a bit lately. The images that come to mind when listening to his music are amazing.
It's definitely really cinematic, I feel like I'm there when listening to it. Probably my personal fav from Tull.

Ian Anderson - such a powerful voice. He's truly a performer worth watching.

Jethro Tull were so good that they were able to sound this great even without their guitars being plugged in..

Very good singer. A very good and speacial song.

Amen.
I don't even think it's one of Tull's best albums. It has a couple of decent songs, but I prefer Heavy Horses.
Ian looking sexy and good in these black jeans. His singing is brought to the forefront again in this tune, fabulous .
I remember reading in an old Rolling Stone in the 70s that he hated blue jeans and preferred corduroy pants.
