but then you won't get the cool background story about the revenant and how they went through 3 rounds or so of camera crew because they kept quitting. It was an extremely grueling shoot and no one was happy on set. Since they used natural lighting it made their shoot like 3 times as long as it needed to be and people were miserable. But at least Leo got his Oscar. Actually I guess you didn't need film school since I just told you, but yea lol
Excellent advice as always StudioBinder; it's no wonder that University lecturers use your videos as references for students to learn from, they're always so good. Every video is a gem, thank you, your work here is very much appreciated.
Even though I already know the majority of the principles here, it’s still incredibly interesting and exciting to see it presented in such a flawlessly slick manner. And of course to see many of the lighting breakdowns and BTS from classic and new works. Refulgent video yet again guys.
I admire this channel, I always tell other people who aspires to become a filmmaker to watch this channel. I am so glad you exist and I hope all the best for everyone that comprise the team of studio binder. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts
Hey, everyone! A few months ago I asked for feedback as an aspiring, student filmmaker on this channel and was so excited with the overwhelming support and kind words. This feedback inspired us to create our new 2-minute horror short film which we’ve just posted on our channel, and we’re so happy with the improvement we’ve made thanks to everyone here. Thanks StudioBinder, and thank you everyone!! Stay creative
This not only taught me a fraking lot of new techniques but also reassured me, that doing things differently does not equal doing things wrong. As a solo filmmaker it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking, you're not doing good enough, just because you chose to try a different approach than what another filmmaker says is right. Seeing so many great cinematographers and the different examples you gave in this - I would call it an actual MASTERCLASS - is so refreshing and motivates me to go on and try what I think is the best way to make the respective scene work! THANK YOU!
Lighting really is an unsung hero of the filmmaking process as it really does play a major role as shown in this video. For me, I only appreciated how important lighting was when I saw a film with bad lighting which completely took me out of the immersion 😂
This is easily the best educational series for any filmmaker; beginner to pro. 🙌🙌 I understand and apply most of the principles here already but it is so so good to see it presented in this form.
Loved the dig at season 8's nonexistent lighting. Idk what they are doing over at HBO for game of thrones because I recently saw it in House of the Dragon too but they really need to change something in their lighting process
The cinematography in Star Trek Generations done by John Alonzo is incredible since he transformed the regular TV film sets into something that looked cinematic, just by changing the lighting and types of camera. If you do a side by side comparison of some of the locations, you would almost think that entirely new sets were built for the movie, when in fact they were just lit (and of course filmed) differently. I believe out of all the TNG era movies, this holds up perfectly visually, more than the other pre- JJ Abrams movies.
i very very love with your youtube channel sir. I am a student. really helped me in knowing the principles of making a video work. Thank you sir. I hope your channel will be more successful
Dude, the Best Boy is on the truck. Men&Equipment. That's the Best Boy's job. The Best Boy sure ain't holding a light on a pole. He's on the phone all day. I'm a Best Boy
Can you do a video specifically on the lighting in The Neon Demon? I found the colors there enhanced in a very interesting way adding very unusual hues to even natural exteriors. And the whole cinematography there gave me the feeling of an unnatural cosmic world happening in another dimension maybe. Also the sound was pretty impressive - embelishing the silence and creating an atmosphere of alienation and unearthliness.
Lighting and Audio are imo the most important things. No matter how good your composition/cinematography if your lighting and audio are bad.. your whole film will be bad 😅
The Best way to express the atmosphere of the Movie and the Soul of the characters is the Lighting process. My Favorite Examples are : E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982) / Jurassic Park (1993) / Blade Runner (1982) / Spider-Man (2002) / Spider-Man 2 (2004) / Kill Bill Volume 1 (2003) / The Matrix (1999) / Sicario (2015) / The Silence of the Lambs (1991) / The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005/2008/2012) / Seven (1995). Steven Spielberg Movies. Martin Scorsese Movies. Quentin Tarantino Movies. David Fincher Movies. And many more.
Video idea - the teen dystopian future film era hunger games/divergent/maze runner etc why those movies were so big aka how to do it perfectly and why that genre is non existent these days PLEASE ❤

camera dept besides the DP I don't think he changed as he decided on that type of shoot, his crew kept rotating

Chinese lanterns floating above the set (or white Christmas lights). Not seen directly, but adds a wonderful, subtle fill to avoid harsh shadows.

@@StudioBinder The work that the Direcors of Photography did by making the Lighting identity of those movies.
I like Michael Fimognari's lighting in The Haunting of Hill House.
That was great
