    Excellent video Robert! My favorite part is when you are explaining how difficult and potentially catastrophic the epoxy step is - it's fun to worry along with you and satisfying to see it work out! I feel like you've got 2 kinds of content in one video. The first is kind of a "watching cool stuff happen to cool music vibe" experience, and the second is "getting to know Robert the craftsman". I'd love more of a 70/30 split where MOST of the video is you talking about your idea, planning it, and discussing the execution, wins and learnings, and the 30 percent is the more chill "watch cool stuff to music" stuff. You've leveled up man, this is really charming!

      Thanks! I always worry that I'm talking too much. Sometimes when I'm watching videos similar to my own I find myself skipping the talking portion because I just want to see the build. You've given me a bit more confidence in the idea that maybe people WANT to hear the plan, or an explanation of why I'm doing what I'm doing. Thanks Dave!

    Well done! I'm trying to make my GF one with the same type of tile setup you used. Mainly because it seemed easier since I do not have all the wood cutting tools that the other boards require. I did go with black and white so I'm a bit worried now that they might have that thickness difference. But either way love the video and thank you :)

      Cool! I wish you luck. I'm thinking that even if the tiles are of slightly different heights, covering them with resin would make it work. Thanks for watching!

    This chessboard is very beautiful, but the surface is reflective, will the chess players get tired easily?

    What’s the measurement of the frames and what is the black thing you put down ?

    • @OperationLetsDoThis
      @OperationLetsDoThis  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi! The black thing was a square of 1/4" plywood used as a base for the pieces. The frame measurement was big enough to account for the size of 8 tiles in a row, plus the 1/16" inch spacers in between the tiles. Not all tiles are the same size, so if you want to build your own you'll have to do the measurements yourself. In my case, the frame needed to exactly encompass a square of 15 and 3/8" inches. Thanks for watching!

      Do you the spacers were necessary?

    I need to replace a solid blue 2" x 2" ceramic tile on my Civil War chess board. Where can I find the tile? Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's, Walmart, and Hobby Lobby don't carry them. My board is a custom handcrafted board. A painted tile will devalue the board. Google is absolutely worthless for searching.

      I don't think you'd be able to find a perfectly matching tile at a retail store, only the board's manufacturer would have the right one. If it were me and I needed the board fixed (and I couldn't contact the manufacturer), I would try to paint a tile. That's assuming that I could find a matching size tile at one of the stores you mentioned, and also assuming that I could get the paint job dead-on accurate. It's a tough call! Thanks for watching!

    Great work! Tho it does make your chess pieces stick out as cheap and inferior like an average Joe in jeans at the Nobel price dinner banquet.

      I know, right? At first I was going to do a whole thing where I make my own pieces, but that fell through. Thanks for watching!
