One of my ancestors, my great-great-grandfather (I'm a Belgian, living in Belgium) was one of the people who had a part in creating the breed in the region around Mechelen (Malines in French, hence Malinois, and the Dutch name for the breed is Mechelse Herder ('Shepherd of Mechelen')).
My grandaunt has the artwork he'd had made of his original Malinois progenitor/ancestor at her home still. Apparently that progenitor was super well trained and he went to pick up my great-grandmother from primary school each day and walked her home, so without the owners! Doing that nowadays would surely get some looks or concerned citizens calling the police xD.

Super intelligent dog they said.

I just saw this on the news, Two dogs locked inside a home, mauled an intruder (who broke into the home) to death. The dogs were taken away initially. After numerous calls and messages to the sheriff’s office, the sheriff had announced that the two dogs will be released to their owners after ten days quarantine. Without the calls of good people, these two would probably be put to death. The family thinks they are heroes ♥️

      @hanadr 2 роки тому +52

@@cynthiajose7787 I've been in rescue for awhile now and the most important thing to do is match the breed and the individual dog's temperament to your lifestyle.
Breeds are known for specific characteristics and it will vary from dog to dog, but there's a lot you can glean just from watching the dog and talking to either the reputable breeder or an experienced rescue handler.
Some breeders and rescue volunteers will say what you want to hear. Be wary of their agenda and put YOUR needs first, because that's the best way to get a dog that suits your family. And I understand it's tempting but DON'T buy a dog based on how cute it is. It's not cute when the dog ends up being too much to handle and destroys your furniture, relationships, and/or becomes a burden.
A well matched dog will bring you countless hours of joy, not to mention the things you learn about yourself.

To me this can be done with,or should, all breeds, usually from being a puppy.

I looked him up and down and said “did you do any research about them?” Because I was searching for the right family dog and knew our lifestyle wouldn’t be good for a malinois. He said “no, I think they’re so cute.” I looked him up and down again and said “research the breed and then come back to me.” Not even thirty minutes later, he came back and said, “Yeah, scratch what I said about having a malinois.” We got German shepherd and training him has been one of the easiest, yet hardest things I’ve done. The whole point of this story is research what breed of dog you’re gonna adopt because even with the extensive research, it’s still hard and you’re locked in. Don’t get a dog just because they’re cute and don’t get a puppy, if you aren’t suited to handle them as adult.

While I'll concede there are bad dogs (hard headed, bad attitude), a whole breed can't be considered bad, due to a few cases of bad training. The Belgian is best treated like a aussie shepherd and similar dogs, give them a job, keep them busy and keep them working to burn the energy off

Now in my 70’s I am aware of my limitations and prefer older and smaller rescues. You can help your audience match their lifestyle and abilities with their pets. Fewer surrendered and abandoned pets. I love watching the grooming and all the hair flying.

Their athleticism is otherworldly. They are absolute fur missiles on the ground and can jump into the ionosphere. I would never want to end up on the business end of a Maligator, either. I've seen training events in which full grown men in heavy bite suits were knocked into the air and barrel rolled by the sheer force of the impact from a locked-on Malinois.

Instead of rehoming they chose the crate &/or chain life. Thankfully, an older couple with a nice active farm adopted all 3. They are alive & thriving. One is best mates with the goat herd... For a belgian malinois being a vicious guard dog and "doing a good job" is frequently the same thing if you've given it socialization training. It will happily chew someone up while at the same time wagging its tail if it believes that's what its owner wants. Which is why belgian malinois are favored for police dog work.
Never equate a dog displaying "happy&interested" behavior with that dog being harmless, because it will literally come back to bite you if you encounter feral street dogs on the prowl.

These are EXCELLENT dogs for people who can give them work and those who live in fairly isolated places or in areas where police response time or reliability isn't good. My great aunt was handicapped and she and her husband lived quite far from the nearest town...plus their farm, where they raised chickens to produce eggs, was a tempting target in a region where economic problems were severe. From people wanting to steal a couple of chickens for dinner to those after money or other things, they really needed working dogs there and though most of theirs were strays dumped by city people on the lonely country roads (who they then usually had to train), they valued each one. The Belgian Malinois was a surprise. I was terrified of it the first time I came over. Young, thin but fast and already getting stronger with good food and care, still nervous but trying SO HARD to act tough and protect these kind new people who had given it a real, loving home. At first he was aggressive with everyone but my aunt and her husband...but he eventually learned to recognize family and friends, to give a little affection and play with them, and to tolerate the postman. But even so...he always watched everyone carefully, just to make sure WE were on our best behavior. We all felt glad he was there.

There are tons of Malinois working as service dogs and working dogs IN THE CITY. And they have no problem with it since their owners socialized them and they were well bred.

She's a beauty. I've done shelter work, and in my experience you have to be extremely careful how you present a breed like this, as there are way too many people (usually men) who want a "tough" dog, and breeds like this (or the rottie, akita, pit, dobie, etc.) are unfortunately often obtained by people looking for a cool factor who are inadequate to the task of caring for them properly.

Agreed. Many people underestimate the time and energy most of the working breeds need. The ones you see on TV acting well are because someone has spent many hours (*cough* months) training and exercising them. I have a GSD mix (whole lotta mix), and though she is more sedate now at almost 10, she was a wild child the first few years and we would spend hours a day exercising.

Those guys are fantastic dogs! I go to a vet school that has support from the local police department, they let us do all their dog's exams and vaccines and all their Malinois are incredibly smart and well trained. We've seen their training sessions and it's beautiful, they're really fast, strong and don't get easily distracted. As soon as their handler gives a command they follow it no matter how entertained they are.
On the other hand i've seen a few from not-so-dedicated handlers and they are the hardest dogs to deal with. Just imagine a big, strong and incredibly smart dog fighting you with all of it's strength and not being afraid to bite. We needed 3 people to deal with one once. It was not pretty and even with all the training that our staff has, one of us still got bitten.
Amazing dogs, but boy do they need an experienced and dedicated owner.

Belgian Shepherds in fact come in four varieties: the Malinois as you see here, the Tervueren (or Tervuren if you're American), the Gronendael (or the "Belgian Sheepdog" if you're American I guess, but that's a gross name for them imo) and the Laekenois. Each variety shares common ancestors but come from different places within Belgium, and they were originally bred to act as both herding dogs and solo guard dogs, where shepherds would leave them on the hills with the sheep and expect them to protect the herd. The Tervueren and Gronendael were also used as messenger dogs in World War II and were so good at their jobs that the Germans would go out their way to target the dogs if they saw them, which nearly resulted in the loss of both varieties of the breed. It took careful crossbreeding to keep both of them around.
Of the four varieties, Malinois are the most demanding, though ALL four Belgian Shepherds need to have owners who are prepared to put in the work training extremely intelligent dogs with fairly extensive physical needs. All four breeds are also double coated, including the short-coated Malinois, and it should be noted that as the Malinois becomes more popular for military grade work (while Tervueren and Gronendael are very popular for search and rescue based work) that their structure is slowly changing (for the worse, I might add.) This particular Malinois is an absolutely lovely little girl who's clearly had all the love she deserves and more, and has a bright future ahead of her thanks to loving and caring owners. She isn't likely to get any larger than she already is, but that's partly why Malinois can be terrifying; a dog her size and her weight can easily floor a 6ft grown man thanks to the zeal with which this breed loves to work.
Glad that you make it very clear this breed of dog is not for everybody. I've lived with Belgians my entire life and been a part of the breed's Association of Great Britain since I was tiny, with the pleasure of owning, training and showing Tervs for two decades and also helping people within the Association with their Maligators, their Gronies and their Laeks. They're easily one of my favourite breeds of all time, but there are far too many people who see them used in police work and think "Oh, they look like a German Shepherd but cuter and smaller and more manageable!" or, even worse, people who see them and think "These would be great to crossbreed with X or Y!" and it's... really bad. We have problems at the moment especially with people having gotten this breed over the pandemic lockdown who now have problem dogs that need really, really special care and attention to effectively "fix" and our rescues are being inundated with dogs who deserved better than the neglect they deserved.
Please, please, please, people: DO YOUR RESEARCH. Call up breeders and ask them for information about their breed! ANY breeder who gives a shit will happily tell you about their breed, about their potential health conditions (epilepsy isn't common in Belgians for example, but is something we warn about) and about the amount of work they'll demand from you as an owner to live a fulfilling life.

I find it fascinating, especially when learning how a breed´s history intertwines with man´s. There are so many breeds I love but have ruled out from owning due to their requirements. It surprises me how ignorant people remain when it comes to dog ownership. This pup is rocking the grooming. My shepherd mix who's personally is that of a lazy Malinois (parvo as a pup before we got her lowered her energy lvls quite a bit) was 3 years old before she was this chill with us grooming her. She is the best dog I've ever had as far as training, didn't even have to house train her she just copied the other dog. She had her basic commands in a few days from watching the other dog in the house. She is the best watch dog I've ever had. She has different barks for different threat lvls, animals, and people. I know who and what is outside by her bark. It was 3 months of sitting next to her while she looked out the window to train her but so worth it. She comes off a bit gruff with folks coming in the house but after she has been reassured they are ok she will go between ignoring them if she dislikes them to bringing them toys as gifts if she likes them. Not the right kind dog for everyone but I love my slightly aloof watch dog.
