It's an expensive lesson to learn. But thanks to you learning it you were able to teach so many others so they do not make the same mistakes. You're amazing Rob, don't let it get you down brother. Luckily for you my father is an operational coordinator at FWC and I showed him this video. He said he will try his best to at least reduce the fine since he's also a big fan of you and of course he does not agree with the exaggerated punishment he gave you. You're a good guy Rob, keep it up!

Lucas FFF Yesss. Anyone whose spent time watching these videos can see Robert isn't out here intentionally breaking the law. He genuinely loves what he does and is trying to inspire others to get out here and be active. He is very knowledgeable about the rules and regulations on so many aspects of what he does. His traps meet all of the standards except the address- I don't think that warrants $400!

htown blow You can see the tags in the beginning of the video..."most likely" is speculation and incorrect speculation at that. Of course he should have known but it happens. Regulations change all the time. They should have let him add his address or given him a warning. He was right there with the traps and met all other requirements.
Immediately after this happens he made a video educating thousands of viewers on the regulations, why it's important to know them, and then cleaned up other people's trash.
He's not a bad guy, or a criminal. It's an honest mistake. That's the kind of thing these officers are supposed to use their judgment on. In this case, this situation was mismanaged.

THEY/FWC were giving out tickets for something trivial and did no harm to the environment. WTF!
I've been a police officer for 17 years now. I remember before I became a police officer my friends and I were near a canal looking at a fishing spot some people had stopped at. Our rods were in my jeep, not even on us and FWC cited us for fishing with out a license. Hadn't even cast or held the dam rod since I put it in my jeep when i left my house.
Total bullshit shows up as a misdemeanor arrest on my record even though I paid the fine by mail.
Didn't even know that it showed up as an a arrest. Total bullshit should have gone to court didn't know any better back then.
When I give citations now I'm more mindful, I also give lots of warnings.
Good man! And ya know the thing is, that's how we lose kids just getting into the out doors! It hardly enough to get them off their buts these days! Thanks for being mindful.

I fill half a dozen trash bags with crap I find on the shore every week. I also don't violate FWC regulations. We have laws for a reason. I remember when you couldn't go into the water without tripping over crabs. Now you actually have to hunt for a good spot. 40 years ago all of Florida was a good spot. Only by strictly enforcing regulations will one day Florida be returned to it's bountiful past.
Having laws and regulations are great and I'm all for them. However, the people enforcing them are stuck up egotistical dicks with no empathy and just try to make money and/or write tickets to make themselves feel powerful. You have a man that cares about the environment hanging out with kids trying to teach them about the outdoors, keeping them off the streets, teaching them skills, and giving them a positive experience that they'll probably remember the rest of their lives. This same man preaches and passionately supports laws and regulations that help the outdoors. He obviously had the legal sized buoys, which he marked, was following the regulations for the keeping of the target species, and had the proper tag on the trap with his name and phone number. He obviously wasn't leaving the traps overnight or anything and like he said for the most part he was STANDING THERE LOOKING AT THEM!!! Alright, legally you are also suppose to have your address on the tag and your buoys must be clearly marked(which they WERE marked, just not very clearly). It was obviously an honest small mistake and NO ONE WAS HURT NOR THE ENVIROMENT DAMAGED NOR ANYONE AFFECTED NEGATIVELY!!! Give the man a warning and halt his crab fishing for the day until the tags are updated and the buoys are re-marked clearly. Boom, problem solved. Giving the man a $400 citation is heartless and an abuse of power. I mean, come on. I know you have a job to do, but he literally had everything right except for 2 minor irrelevant details. The regulations were also written for a different reason, for crabbers who set traps over night or spread through different areas of the waterways so they can be identified, not for a guy walking up and down the shore with a bunch of kids and tossing a few out for 2-3 hours. Those details were irrelevant as to what they were doing in relation to why the regulation was created. Those officers are on a power trip and looking for ANYTHING to cite him for and steal his money. This is so messed up. This is why I HATE FWC. They use protecting the environment as an excuse to excessively use all of the power given to them to take advantage of whoever they can. It would of been easier for them to halt the crab fishing for the day(which was probably a bummer for Rob and the kids anyway) and just given them a warning. But I guess they really need to make money somehow. Very sad to watch.
Nunya, there is common sense involved here. Those regulations were created for a different reason. There is no need to put identifying marks on a crab trap your standing next to. It was an honest mistake that affected no one and the only real violation was one of "paperwork" that was irrelevant in the way that they were using the traps. In this situation, they could've just stopped their crab fishing for the day and educate them. That would've solved the "problem" and I guarantee it would have never happened again. But no, they're going to fine him $400 for illegal crab fishing because of a BS irrelevant reason. That's a crime. If you understand why the regulation was created, you would understand how much BS it was to fine the man hundreds of dollars in this specific situation. No one was affected negatively nor the environment damaged. What's the importance of having your address on the tag in this situation? "Well, it's the law!" Have a little common sense and decency. People are so selfish and have such big egos. The OPPOSITE of what this man was doing by trying to reach out to kids.
If they would have halted the fishing for the day and not given a fine most of you would still be complaining
@nasty piglousy Yes actually it will so they can be identified so FWC can verify that they have a license when not present. Poaching is a huge problem. The only way the FWC can know how many you are taking is to know which traps are yours. This is why you can't put traps in the water that are not correctly tagged. If you don't want to follow the rules then don't fish in our waters period! No tag means you are a poacher.

The name and phone number being displayed on a " publicly viewed item" could lead to harassment from anti types.
FWC needs to issue a conservation number to every outdoors person that buys a permit or license. That can be used as an identifier for the FWC

When I was a kid in South Carolina, we use to go every weekend to catch crabs. The best bait we used was raw chicken. We even caught an octopus one time

1. If you are writing to say the audio is off and he needs a better camera shut up. Unless you want to buy him a camera or post videos of how you live your life please leave.
2. I've encountered FWC many times and have never had a pleasant times. Always trying to find the smallest hiccup in your activities. Sucks having to worry about being outdoors and living life.

This is a very unfortunate example of a local law agency taking advantage of the community they are supposed to protect. Clearly a person who is video taping their every step to post on a public forum accessible to everyone to see is not going to intentionally break the law. Your camera man even had the courtesy to ask if they minded being filmed. What a shame. These officers should have taken the opportunity to educate the public on the correct identification of traps. Instead, they fined someone who is otherwise a fantastic ambassador of the outdoors. Rob, you did the right thing by using this experience to educate everyone. These tyrants should be ashamed of themselves. They have forgotten what it means to protect and serve. Shame on them but good on you for passing on the lesson. Props from the SC.
responsible hunters, fisherman,and trappers know and follow regs. i mean he did bring a trailer full of crab traps when all you need is a couple of hand lines for recreational crabbing.

But he did in fact intentionally break the law. Law states 5 traps per person and must be identified with name address and phone number of the trap owner fishing them. Bouy must be minimum 6" and marked with a R for recreational. Dude was running many more than 5 traps. He even says he borrowed traps from friends. Unless they were tagged with names and addresses of others fishing with him he was breaking the law.
If he's out trapping in the middle of nowhere nobody is going to question his invalid tagging. But in a known popular public spot. FWC is definitely passing by to see who's breaking the rules because people are always breaking the rules in those places.
This isn't secret info it's easy to find on the FWC website. There's no excuse for doing it wrong unless it was intentional thinking he would get away with it.

In the mid to late 60s, my dad and I would go off in a small outboard boat crabbing. Had the traps like you have, plus we used hand lines with a fish head tied to it. We never had to have any of those markings or tags. We'd drop the traps over the side, sit there for half hour, and haul up a dozen of so. Biggest catch we had in one day was over 100 blue shell crabs off the coast of New Jersey.
Robert - another great video! I think FWC overstepped as well - hope you went to court over that fine! Anyway, God bless you in all your efforts to educate the youth about all that is out there for all our enjoyment IF we use it RESPONSIBLY!

Rob I think this a very positive message sent from something negative. A lot of hunting and fishing videos never show the miss attempts at anything they go for. They for sure never show anything that draws a fine. How many people will watch this that are going crabbing. How many people you saved from the same mistake could save thousands of dollars in fines. I also love your attitude in the face of your own set back.

@Jeff Schwab oh I'm sure there is a pamphlet in any bait shop that is very clear what the law is. He just decided to ignore the law so he received a ticket. Very few game wardens just let people off the hook. I'm curious how much the total fine would be if they wrote every infraction.

FWC should have used some discretion and had a learning moment and educated all of you that you missed (accidentally not intentionally) putting your address on your tags. Poor judgement on the FWC's part IMHO. This is why the law abiding citizens have reduced their support of law enforcement over the years. SMH
