Morsecode is genuinely so God damn good at this game. He took his first set from Cody in part because Cody had no idea how to handle ledge drop fair, but this time Cody just had no idea how to approach horizontally or vertically. Unbelievably great set.
Surgical play from Morse. Keeping calm against 2024’s Best Player In the World as SAMUS is not a feat to be understated. A few costly tech flubs from Cody, but it comes with the territory playing such a demanding character. Excellent matches. The Downward-angled Forward Smash to secure game 4 is a very precise input + timing and showcases morse’s mastery over Samus in a very quiet way. Fellow Samuses, study this! There’s so much to learn from both players here.

edge guarding fox is extremely difficult and essentially relies on callouts to "convert". Uptilt looks like a move that can swat fox up b, but in reality it trades at best in most situations. Fox upb snaps to ledge in more situations than samus can handle. Rising firefox is also extremely hard to beat. Downtilt CAN hit a rising upb but it doesn't usually convert to anything significant if the fox DIs hard behind. TLDR There isn't a great flowchart and Samus has to either commit to an option or just hold stage.

Zoning characters have always been polarizing in fighting games, especially in the toxic Smash community. Cody plays a very zone focused Fox and Samus is all zone control by default. I agree with you, this is a very fun matchup to watch

He did a good job of punishing up smash on shields. Cody was trying to abuse up smash so much in these games. He would just spam jab+up smash, waveshine up smash, and down throw tech chase up smash. So happy to see MC win it.

The frame data on multihit moves are abysmal in Melee compared to Ultimate. There isn't a dragdown effect in melee, and you're often negative on hit, so you're just relying on Foxes not pressing any buttons. I looked at Melee Calculator, and it looks like the multihits put Fox in 17 frames of hitstun, but since you have to land uair to interrupt it, Fox hits the ground several frames sooner (more like 12-14 frames of hitstun). Samus has 7 frames of landing lag, so you would realistically have 5-7 frames to punish, which is just enough to get out a downsmash. Looks really tight, and it might not even be possible to get a true punish in scenarios where Fox hits the ground before 12 frames of hitstun. Would be nice if Samus could get a grab out of it, but...
Not many know the matchup at a top tier level, because there's only a few top tier Samus players these days. Modecode, TheSWOOPER, and Wevans are it in the top 100 (could maybe count Plup, even though he doesn't play Samus any more)
If this was the Magic: the Gathering community, Morsecode would have been grilled for not conceding to Cody since he was capable of going further in the bracket.

I feel like if I went back to melee I would pick up a character other then samus. The things she has to overcome in this current meta don’t seem fun. Just everything feels wrong and like nothing leads into nothing. Getting charge shot is basically reserved for in between stocks which is not guaranteed. Like if samus was able to charge in the air and had a little less lag on charge cancel then I feel like the rest would be worth it. I wouldn’t mind the rest of her issues. I wouldn’t ask her to be overpowered. Just to function more like a zoner I would rather learn captain falcon if I had to fight good players now

The man plays a very rare and obscure character, is the best with this obscure character, and significantly better than the other top 100 ranked Samus, and on top of that plays a unique style that differentiates himself than the other Samus mains with Samus, and he barely shows up to majors. Like how do you prep for MC cause barely anyone plays Samus anymore? You just gotta always keep an eye out if Morse is showing up or not. I don’t think Samus is a good character at all. But with the right bracket and element of surprise you can fuck shit up.
