Since Mark grew up in Cincinnati, he will definitely be familiar with Hamilton and Fairfield, the places I grew up in. Let’s not forget Cincinnati chili!
When the man interviewed went to the land of K-Pop in 2009, I was already teaching ESL in the land of anime. I visited Seoul by flying over the Sea of Japan in March 2010. The work environment he described is very similar to what I had experienced in Japan.
As for affordability in Japan, you can make things more affordable by moving away from places like Tokyo and Osaka.

The yen is down around 40% against the dollar, makes it cheap there these days.

I remember the housing crisis all to well. It was devastating for me. I lost my job and then lost 4 duplex properties as the renters could not pay rent and I was unable to cover the mortgage. My wife at that time divorced me and I ended up broke and homeless. It was another "Great Depression" for Americans in my mind. I relocated for work making less than half of what I was used to and had to pull from savings and 401K. Things got better but it took many years for me to recover. It was a horrible time. I hope we never go through that again.

I remember losing my job in 09 , it was due to companies cutting back due to the Obamacare mandate increasing premiums to skyrocket which caused companies to trim the fat , luckily i had my contacts and started being a subcontractor for the Gov housing authority contracting 4800 units a year , gov housing was the only thing growing and progressing back then because people were losing everything .
