- The GT2RS and 959 represent the top of Porsche's line-up, 30 years apart. We had the rare opportunity to drive them back to back in a comparison we've never seen and never thought we'd get to do.
It's not our usual subjects... but we like to dream as well!

959 every day all day. It's a piece of history, one of the coolest classics ever.
I must say, this is the first time I've seen these guys, and I can honestly say that these guys are one of the best presenters I've seen in so long. They are true car guys. Very enthusiastic and relatable. No stupid jokes, no robotic speech, just talking about the cars! Love it. Oh, and the 959 is my dream.
You should check out Auto Europa Naples. That channel is pretty good too. The guy talks a lot of history on the cars and tours the car with enthusiasm.
Glad you found us, and enjoyed what we do. Thanks for watching!
Agree. I am going to work hard now. I just need the GT2
Agree review was brilliant
You need to get a reality check and fast.
I'd take the murdered out GT2RS. I don't need the anxiety of owning a museum piece.
Well will the GT2RS not become a museum piece?
Joe H galaxy brain spotted
@Lawrence L. The GT2 RS will definitely become a museum piece, 997 GT2 RS's are already going for $400k+.
I'd take both n call it a day. Yes the 918 is beautiful jus sitting there n even tho the new Taycan is round the corner n looks real nice still cant accept the fact thats its ev ( my personal opinion ). The 959 is a fragile gem but i would drive it tho if money wasn't a problem
Chris Valiente you can remove the 918 from that list. Haven’t seen one under 1.2
I still have my 959 Revell model kit from the 80s. I dreamed of having a Porsche. I love my 928 S4.
I grow up in the former GDR (east germany). My uncle from west germany give me a christmas Gift in 1988 a model from a 959. And i still have this model.
the fastest i ever drove in a car was a 928 s4. in weschester NY. on the hutchingson river parkway. 168mph. on the speedo. so maybe 155 im quessing.
You could get a used one now.
Search the internet. Make that dream a reality. You only live once.
@@x...CrankyOldMan...x The fastest car I ever drove was a SL500. I went 135- 140mph racing a La Ferrari and he toasted me. The fastest car I was ever in was a Jaguar X 12. We were doing 160mph. All of thee above was done on public roads.
...Hey Edwin, interested in a first class Getty series 7 959 conversion - flat bottom,. Internal roll cage, convertible, silver 8 & 10 OZ rims, Porsche 2-step epoxy original porsche white body, all on an 79 Targa frame and 3.2 L 89 Carrera engine...all fabricated at Protosport...let me know
A Porsche dealer a little ways down the road from me has a White 959S on display in their showroom, and it's an absolute treat every single time I see it.
As a past owner of a 3.2 Carrera, it's nice to hear the 959 comparisons.
Brilliant Paul and Todd & crew! Thank you!
The Gelände gear is not for off-roading. What happened in Germany when this car was released was that it was too loud to pass noise emission tests at the time, and so Porsche came up with a loophole to pass the test. They renamed the first gear as the "country side" gear (Gelände) so as to be able to pass the noise test, which was done by accelerating away from a dB meter at the exhaust at full speed from a standstill in first gear. Since they renamed the gears, they were actually passing the test accelerating from a standstill in second gear. Accelerating from a standstill in Gelände gear was technically only allowed on roads in the countryside where the noise restrictions were lower.
A perspective on the insane performance of the GT2RS: A friend of mine does the Virginia City hillclimb most years, usually in his Nissan GTR (heavily tweaked, making about 1000 HP). He previously set the course record in that car with a 3:11. He bought a GT2RS Weissach this year, and brought that instead. Bone stock, including stock tires, he ran a 3:09.
Your friend and anyone who brought GT2RS including the testing journalists here should tanks to Mr. Walter Rohrl who perfected all Porsche extreme cars (718 GT4, GT3, GT3RS, GT2RS) being involved as Chief Test driver.. ;0)
Porsche is dope.
Best looking and aging well (imo), one of if not the best perfs and drivable everyday even 30 years later?
The GT2RS is a pretty insane achievement. On paper, it shouldn't stand a chance against the more hardcore stuff like a Ford GT or a Ferrari 488 Pista, but it is indeed faster around most tracks, without being anywhere as punishing.
So glad you brought up Bruce Canepa. I grew up in Santa Cruz right down the street from Bruce Canepa dealership. This was the wonderful 1980s. I think it was called Bruce Canepa Motorsport. Anyway, he had exotics all over the lot. I would marvel every time I rode my skateboard by there. Also, my house was on the corner of Poplar and Fairmount. For whatever reason his cars would often pass right in front of my house. There’s a stop sign and many times they’d lay into the throttle a bit and row through the gears. It was a marvelous sound of precision moving parts and a delight to my ears. That’s when my love of the automobile started. Ah...the memories.
Canepa Motorsport. Still an amazing place. Every year I visit and just drop my jaw to the floor.
The 959 is simply beautiful and was ahead of its time.
It literally was at least 20 years ahead of the 911 turbo. They wanted to prove the 911 had a long life in front of it and they did.
If I was could have any car, it would be this one, even in 2021.
@@jolness1 since I saw the very first one in a magazine. THE pinnacle of German design of my favourite sports car. I remember reading that it idled at like 800 rpm and they could put it in 6th and smoothly take off. After hearing about the terrain mode, that’s probably how it was done. lol
Still so so cool 😎
@@missesmew such an incredible car. I'm sure you know that in the US the "show and display" law was passed largely because of this car. Bill Gates wanted his and Canepa helped. As a 911 fan, arguably one of the most important cars ever. The adjustable suspension and incredibly advanced AWD system still feel modern today. It's also the only supercar that was ever designed primarily for rally. The Rothman's livery is beautiful as well. It looks every bit a 911 but is unmistakably 959.
@@jolness1 yes, I was in awe (lol, was, still am) of all the innovations in this car. AWD, in 87, I mean come on. Even my power saw is German, lol. At least I can afford that.
Porsche should come out with a throwback model, just make it with all the latest and see if it can or how much better it could be? Maybe an electric ⚡️ fuel hybrid. Would be interesting 🤔
Light-years ahead!
oil change $30,000 yeah thats going to be a problem long term for me.
A video break down as to why, would be an interesting video.
long term..?
remember that you are actually changing the oil on a "detuned" 956racing car, Le Mans winning engine, if you do not like history, well, you wont understand shit
Vash Spiegel There's not a chance that it requires even a tenth of $30,000 in labor costs. They just charge that much for a 959 oil change because of how expensive the car is, it's just a scummy upsell. It's likely that $30k is Porsche's charge for an oil change, because I doubt many 959 owners want to take their prized possession anywhere for maintenance other than Porsche.
When you can afford the $million dollar + price tag, for a 959, $30k for an oil change is routine.
I was never a huge fan of the 959's looks but I was awe of Porsche when they released it. I truly can't tell you which I think is cooler? The best shot you guys gave us in my opinion is at 28 minutes 16 seconds. It's like a dad who's done extremely well raising a child.
The fact that this video doesn't have 100K views yet is a crime! Beautiful work guys, may not be everyday cars but this is next level!
RUF CTR versions are crazy as well.
Relative to its era, is the 959 the greatest single leap in super car history? Seems it was 5 sigmas ahead of anything else on the market at the time.
I remember reading the stats and performance figures when the 959 was new and feeling like there had to be some kind of mistake. Like maybe those wacky Europeans had accidentally let Porsche register a race car for street use. (Which in a way, I guess, they did, but not in the way I first suspected.)
Every Day Driver is by far my favorite source of auto media these days. These guys are the best! This episode in particular was captivating!!! What astonishingly cool sports cars.
First time I've seen these guys. 959 was always a dream car. But I want the Paris-Dakar edition. LOL
959 one of the greatest cars ever!
Shaiyan Hossain Agreed
Top three.
Definately a groundbreaker
@@veedee4860 Top 3 now in 1988 groundbreaking.
Absolutely.
Fantastic piece again guys. Love the match up, which is a refreshingly different perspective on both cars.
The 959 is the most genius car ever made
I've always heard that the 959 is one of the most daily drivable and easy to live with supercars ever made.
Funny how people compare it to an f40. I guess they were both the best each company had to offer, but 2 diff animals. Kind of like 918. It was made to show how electricity will be used in future sports cars, not to be fastest thing ever made. Even though it was for a while. It even had regen braking to help mpg or whatever it's called. LA Ferrari and P1 didn't
Epic... absolutely epic. Thanks for showing us what these amazing cars are like to those of us lucky to even see one let alone drive. Keep up the great work gents, cheers!
959, f40, countach are the 3 dream cars for me growing up.
+ mclaren f1
The 959 F1 n the Countach were mine frm that time
benjamin le McLaren F1 from different era. 959 and F40 were from mid 80 to early 90. f1 was from mid 90. They didn’t complete with each other.
Eddie Leung the last 959 was in 93 the first F1 was in 93. No they did not compete wit each other but were in the same year the last F40 was in 92 basically the same era.
I'd rather a Diablo SV the countach seems too chintzy and 80s boxy for me.
This is a ridiculously, radical awesome video!! -🍻
4:30 that clock though😂
You guys soothe the soul. Thank you for the amazing videos and your amazing podcast! ❤️
I’m never going to have that kind of money for a car, but that looks like a lot of fun. I love the GT2RS.
Hey bro, never say never? You never know what you're future may hold. I am 52 years old and love cars. My wife and I have a 15 Civic SI and an 18 SI. They are both fun but we love the 18. You don't need to spend $300 grand to have something enjoyable. I wish you much success.
You can always go to a track event and rent one. I live in LA and Porsche has a driving experience here where you pay to get driving lessons in a Porsche racetrack with one of their cars
I’m 29 and just bought a 997 turbo. Work your ass off and get what you want. It’s hard but it works
My nephew bought himself a GT2RS and it is a very very nice vehicle but really it is suited more to the race track than everyday use but it is quite OK to drive it to the track.
You don't need money to drive one. You just need to want to really really bad.
I like the way these two narrate the show. It feels very organic. Almost like you're having a conversation with one of your friends. Kudos.
Love it! Great job guys! Great insight, technical, and artistically shot. You two are awesome and the reason I ventured into my 2004 C4S. Life is good! Thank you!
Great review guys, appreciate the detail and effort you've gone to with the dialogue and cinematic shots. Have to say it's leagues ahead of the other review I watched on these earlier in the week. Hope you dont mind me taking some of your angles for my own channel. 👍
38 seconds in and I love the editing. Great work.
Fantastic video, guys! Especially loved the music; could really feel Todd's background in the movie industry with how well it fit the mood of the piece, especially in the opening shots.
Amazing cars!! Great review and great editing. Thanks
I love the fact that you started talking with a smile!!!! That means a lot!!! Keep on going guys!!! Your channel is awesome!!!
Old cars and retro music, sublime
Im not a Porsche guy but dang this video made we want a GT2RS real bad! Awesome video, superb quality. Anyone that bags on this video needs to stop trolling on youtube and get a life. I consume all EverydayDriver content and am never disappointed.
Another great comparison. Been a fan since the E90 v E46 M3 video
These cars are way too precious but I’d love to have the money to whip these every weekend. Amazing cars. Amazing mini-movie as usual.
Wow what a video! Beautifully shot, cars driven properly and some really interesting history. Well done!
So much of what you said about the GT2RS rings true. I drove, and rode in, one for about 3 days last fall. The car was amazing. Ridiculous speed in that car. But very manageable.
One of the most entertaining car reviews I have yet seen. There are just two things I don't understand: (1) Why it took this long for me to discover your channel; (2) Why your subscriber base is not at least ten times its current size.
Well done guys!
This video is a gem.. nothing more iconic than the 959.. then add in a gt2 rs in the mix? Wow!
Absolutely, one of your best pieces to hit YT!!!
Not at all sure on how you guys have any dislikes on this video. Very well done. Awesome video. Thank you for posting it to UA-cam!!
I have seen one 959 in real life. Up close. In Aspen Colorado. And I can say, they are truly remarkable cars. Definitely a top 10 on my list of cars I’d own
I saw one up there also, 80s, thinking it was Danny Sullivan’s, not a prototype! But wow, I was excited to see it parked in downtown aspen, near the Ute city bank building.
Wow, this production is absolutely amazing!
I recall reading about the 959 back when it came out. I owned a 78 thunderbird, so..Anyway,. I so wanted to just pull up next to someone in that car that had something, and then push the suspension button that lowered it, right there at the stoplight. That sounded so cool.
Excellent video guys. This has got to be one of my favorites.
Thank you guys. That was straight up amazing!
I really enjoyed this video:) Great work ED.
From the commentary, the landscape and the choice of cars, this video is the most soothing to my soul.
Thank you, thank you , thank you.
Can we take a second to talk about that trailer/hauler?! Good lord even that is a thing of beauty...
Incredible cars, great presenting and knowledge, but absolutely breathtaking footage! Can’t believe I’ve just discovered these guys after watching thousands of car videos!
Discovered your channel today lol.. Brilliant episode, stunning scenery...
The ocean current vs smacked by a wave is an excellent analogy, readily obtainable to people. Very well done!
The 'best friends with the world greatest assassin' is also a good one.
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you!
Great video guys. I am definitely a Porsche fan boy and both of these cars are so lust worthy. That GT2 RS looks incredible going down the road with all that carbon fiber and aero. Just menacing.
That was truly fantastic, and I'm not given to hyperbole.
I was in my teens when the 959 came out. It was jaw-dropping in its advancement. Your comment about the Ferrari F40 is what I always thought. Yes, the Ferrari is exciting and quick, all the things you expect from Ferrari. But it was nothing like the 959 in terms of innovation, nor was it anything like as liveable. Saying the 959 feels like it's 10-12 years old is a great summary, and a measure of how remarkable it is. A friend of mine's father had a 911 3.3 turbo in 1988, the original 4 speed. He used to let me drive it (yes, sounds crazy). That thing was amazing compared with any 'normal' car, so the 959 was next level dreamland stuff.
As for the GT2RS? Surely one of the greatest cars able to be bought by the general public ever built. I'm not sure what, if anything, effectively rivals it. I thought the comment about being friends with the world's greatest assassin was funny and apt; the more you think about that, the more it works.
It's why I've always loved Porsches from the moment I had my first ride in that friend's 3.3 Turbo. Amazingly quick (for its time) yet ridiculously easy to drive around town.
Great video on two of my favourite cars ever built, and wonderful discussion of all the important aspects.
Great video and commentary as always. You guys don't get enough credit.
Great camera work. Beautiful cars and scenery.
I would take the 959 over the GT2 any day of the week. it's a legend, and paved the way for ALL SUPERCARS... yes, ALL. it's performance stats if converted today would be what Bugatti is today.
The Wedge yes however you couldn’t drive it that’s the problem unless you’re making over £1000000 a year
Love the way the 959 still looks totally current like it was unveiled yesterday.
I loved my Porsche but still prefer the Lambo
I feel like it looks somewhat dated. But maybe that's just because I thought it was so amazing looking at the time when it was new.
Amazing video guys. The fact the 959 is still competitive to the GT2 shows how bad ass it still is.
Everything is beautifully explained and told. What I miss is driving both cars on the race track. Then you could have seen nice handling. The way it is, it's like a Sunday afternoon drive with the family.
The analogies never end....and I like it.
This car floats my boat. It may not be a motorcycle, but in the right hands, it will generate as much adrenaline.
The 911 body style is absolutely timeless.
Absolutely incredible, guys. Loved it.
Yr so very lucky, remember to try and enjoy every moment.
A 959! Congrats guys!
The 959 was my poster car. An incredible vehicle.
I had to stop watching halfway through. I had the sudden urge to sell everything I own and buy the GT2RS. I do not think the GT2RS would be comfortable to sleep in.
One of my favorite bumper stickers said “You can’t race your house, but you can sleep in your car.”
I know right. All I kept saying is "I need to drive a GT2RS......NOW!"
You can sleep in your car - you can't race your house! Start selling stuff...
Sleep is overrated. You only live once. Do it and tell your grandkids awesome Porsche stories.
I can't believe you guys pulled this off! Original idea, and well done!
I'm not a fan of the intro and the soundtrack at the beginning of the video, but from that point, all is good. I like the talking with no BS or showing off. I like there's lots of internal and external sounds with a proper emphasis on them. I like the shots, both the close following, and the distant. Cockpit shots are also good, from various angles. Great stuff guys!
Briliant comparison - love the 2 driver reviews seamlessly edited together - congratulations
Thank you! We’ve been using this format for our big comparisons since the show started and it’s mainly reserved for our TV episodes now. Glad you enjoy it and a big thanks for watching!
959 is a all time legend! Love it❤️❤️❤️
That's all very nice, but you have forgotten something important to say about the 959 "race history": the Porsche 961, which was the 959 LeMans racing version, was immediately successful at its first 24 hours of LeMans race in 1986, with a class victory in "GTX class" and an overall 7. place of course, behind six other Porsche 962, 956 and 936!
Of course at this unbelievably successful time in motorsport for Porsche during the whole 1980' at LeMans 24 with totally dominance, when sometimes only Porsche 956 and 962 were in the top ten result lists, there was no purpose for an AWD "unicorn" car like the Porsche 959/961. But if there would have been only a little bit of rain in the 1986 LeMans race, the Porsche 961 would have been the winner, thanks to its AWD system, which was exclusively allowed for the 961 in this race!
The manageable comment you made is really true about all 911s. My first Porsche is a 997.2 C4S and it's the fastest car I've been in, personally. It puts the power down so effectively that I always feel confident and in control. I couldn't say that about my LS3 Camaro. I think that's why we all fall in love with 911s. They provide performance that inspires confidence - even if you're a noob
Nice guys have done a nice review in a nice surrounding! 👍
Thank's for that and nice Greetings from Germany! ✋
As an old racekid of the '70's, I remember seeing Peter Gregg, Al Holbert and Hurley Haywood kick ass in carrera RSR's of the day. Heck Mr. Gregg even won a championship in a BMW if memory serves me.
Guys, you absolutely killed it! This is far and away one of the finest reviews I have viewed on UA-cam. You did your homework and it shows. Outstanding work!!!
Good friends with someone who had a 959 years ago. He still groans about how expensive it was to keep on the road, and he’s owned some heavy hitters.
Both cars are the best of their time, this is my conclusion. The 959 was a sort of laboratoy of all the technologies who became standard for lots of following supercars and the 991.2 GT2 is the best 911 ever produced
Well... The gt2rs is the most powerful, but the gt3rs n/a sound is better.
What a master piece video! Truly inspiring. Congrats!
I remember drooling over the 959 when it came out. It still looks stunning. And more importantly, still holds its own in the road.
My pick here as well. But a close call.
Todd on the black beast: 'like being in love with the world's greatest assassin.'
Any given car may thrill or disappoint- but Everyday Driver's Paul and Todd always deliver.
Great video guys keep up the great work. Well done to even get someone to lend you that 959. Don’t wanna think about insurance!
As always, guys, you were amazing. And as always, Porsche showed they are the greatest.
Thanks for not putting this film behind a paywall guys
Excellent job guys. What a cool video. And only $30k for an oil change!
I seriously loved the 959 when it came out! Great video! Well done.
Wrapped c pillars.... Porsche knows how to make interiors good lord
959 one of my favorites
Marvellous! Excellent story. Thanks for sharing. If I could only have 1 ultimate car, it would still be a 959. Of course, I might ask Canepa to breathe on it a little also.
"I wouldn't drive my 1.2 million dollar 959 offroad". Somebody get in touch with that Eat the Rich channel and tell em to get a 959.....
Hot damn gents... what a video.
Just discovered your channel, and plenty glad that I did. Subbed!
Just discovered your video. Great work. It took me a while to figure it was 2 guys. My only concern is that you speak too fast sometimes. So I watched it back with subtitles. Loved it.
Gorgeous video, I throughly enjoying watching this even a few years after your filming. Where is this amazing roads ?
I used to think the 959 was mid engined back when I was little. That stretched rear gives it a unique look.
I am happy a lot of people have forgotten about the joys of owning a sports car. I can have the feeling all to myself :)
Even thou I'm not a Porsche enthusiast, the 911 GT2 RS,
YES, PLEASE, AND THANK YOU.
The legend and saviour of Porsche. I’ve been lucky enough to drive a 959. Sadly , not over 4500 revs but it was/is incredible
One of the best car videos, EVER, you did it, Porsche legends!
Awesome episode guys!!!
