#Porsche #959 #911
From the snowy banks of Sweden to the scorching blacktops of circuits around the globe, in the mid 1980's Porsche was on top, and couldn’t fail.
But behind those colorful race cars, In the shadows of those podium celebrations, Porsche, at its core, was rotting. Years of bad decisions had left the business side of Sttugart’s finest in shambles. Gearheads who won races had no idea how to be profitable in the modern world.
The future of the worlds must stuffy and successful sports car brand was on a razors edge.
In that darkest moment, a few brave minds at Porsche decided to take a risk and build an out of this world machine so powerful; so complex, so far ahead of its time, that it would change the future of fast cars forever,
And nearly kill Porsche itself, in the process.
This is the story of the greatest car Porsche ever made…
The 959.

"I know Hammond and May think my 928 Porsche is a bit dull. But for one very good reason, it isn't dull to me. Back in 1994, I was living in London and I got a call one evening from my mum to say that my dad was desperately ill in a hospital in Sheffield, and I needed to get there as quickly as possible. And I had just taken the chicken out of the oven and I thought, "Well, I'll take that for my mum because she won't have eaten". I ran outside and I had a 928 on test that week, and when I arrived in Sheffield, the chicken was still warm and my dad was still alive. In fact, he died half an hour later. And the truth is, if I hadn't been driving a car that can sit quite happily at 170 miles per hour, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to say goodbye to my dad. So as far as I'm concerned, the 928 is alright."
-Jeremey Clarkson, *Top Gear*
I'll never forget Clarkson's story about driving that 928 to the hospital to see his dying father one last time. Thanks for sharing.
Very powerful scene and quote. Thank you for sharing it. This brought tears to my eyes. This perhaps was Jeremey Clarkson's most real moment in my opinion. It hit hard.
I love that story
Yes, a pertinent quote from one of the real Top Gear folks, good times!
@@the.squidd and I love roast chicken.
Clarkson - IIRC - was, overall, NOT a Porsche lover (I believe he destroyed a 911 during one episode of Top Gear.). That story about being able to hotfoot it to Sheffield to see his Dad was the exception.
You are UA-cam supremacy.
It's crazy. Every single upload is worlds better than the last one. It's absolutely mind boggling how everything you do is just right. I'm still not watching your videos on my phone. Still only commenting on it. I'm a member for almost 6 months now and I've never regretted it. I adore your videos. I hope you'll keep doing what you're doing for a very long time.

@@hamza.991 He is correct though. "You are the Documentaries" @The Squidd . He does make the best documentaries.
@DanielFrost79 He himself is not a documentary. The documentaries are his.
I'm a Corvette guy, so I'll always see Porsche as a chief rival. But as with sports rivalries, there can be mutual respect. The 959 is one of the most beautiful feats of mechanical engineering I've ever seen.
Yes. Unlike the Corvette the Porsche has engineering.
Watch it Sucker!
Corvette and Porsche aren’t even competition let alone rivals
Corvette?🤢
😂😂😂😂
The 959 is amazing because of how it was so ahead of its time. So much stuff that it introduced we still use today like adjustable dampers, height adjustable suspension, ABS, TPMS, traction and stability control...it's puffy looking but I think it's beautiful, it's like a 911 with some armor.
Best analogy I've read. It's like someone took the automobile version of a warrior ready for their final fight, and told them what was said in the video, "Win, win everything, and win at any FUCKING cost."
@THE SQUIDD
6:36 Because (I'm assuming) you felt passionate enough to tell this amazing story about a gear-head with an equally amazing passion for speed, and the machine built to fulfill that passion.
What documentaries you make should never be judged by how profitable they are, but the quality of the story they tell, and I stand *firm* in my previous statement that your "motorcycle video" is *the* *best* documentary you've ever made. And thank you for making it.
I kid. I don’t care about this channel making money as long as it makes enough to pay my people well. I have a day job.
I too think the Britten piece is one of our best and I regret nothing.
🤜🤛
A sentiment I resonate with. I love motorcycle and didn't know about that legendary man like at all. The video did exactly what it was set out to do. Bring these insane incredible stories to the mass. And yes, it was the best video to date. It was not about saving a company - or anything absurd. Just about man dreaming to be best. A story as old as mankind. Nothing new. But rawest form of passion, inspiration and epicness.
I'm not much into motorbikes, but I really loved that video! Keep telling stories you're passionate about, I'm sure I'm not the only one appreciating that so much about this channel.
"The 911 is forever"... The chills i get in all your videos. ❤️
never forget
It's so sad, that a company with that sort of engineering excellence, had to propagate the nonsense that a car with the engine hanging out the back of the car in back of the rear axle, was a safe way to have an average driver to enjoy pushing the limits of handling on public roads. The insanity of using men's insecurity over their masculinity, to sell more cars, when they could instead have shown the world what great cars that they COULD make, is indefensible.
The 911 rear engine design killed more drivers than any other engineering farce. More than exploding Pintos, more than swing axle Corvairs. And it continues to this day. The only selling point of a rear engine 911, is to try to prove to the world what a manly man you are, able to 'tame the beast' of a truly lousy handling car. Case in point; Porsche 911 fans actually deride Boxters and Caymans for being 'sweet handling cars', as if it's not a car 'that a REAL man would choose to drive'. Think about that for a moment; choosing to drive a lesser capable car, because it's 'more manly'.
That is just insane, but huge numbers of men truly believe that they need to prove their manhood by doing stupid things.
@@d.e.b.b5788 You know jack shit. It was never about ego or "proving how much of a manly man you are", and that wouldn't be porsche's fault even if it was. Some people just do it because of the excitement. The 930 is still one of my dream cars purely for those reasons. I mostly ride bikes when it comes to performance oriented stuff and the first thing I do is turn off all the aids, not because I need to prove to myself, much less to anyone else, how much my cock smells, but because having a superduke attempt to throw you off while at the same time lifting the front out of a corner is peak fun.
Also, I've never seen someone in a porsche space tell someone else he's not a real guy for not getting a 911. McLarens also kill TikTokers like Porsches kill doctors. You literally pulled that whole thing out of your ass just to whine about people having fun.
Looks like you're part of the huge number of women who need to prove their womanwhood by complaining over nothing.
The Porsche 959 is an engineering marvel. And thanks to it, I was able to buy a Slyline GT-R R32 back in early 2000’s. Nissan fully bought and used the 959 to develop many of its system. So never would I be able to buy a 959 but I do enjoy a very poor man’s version. lol. Not even a close car but so glad those guys pushed to get this ever so sweet 959 into existence 🙏
Ive always said everything you did about the 959. It created the greatness we see today. It was THE reason we have things today in our vehicles we take for granted and think it was someone else. Nobody looks at the 959 for what it really is, and its sad. It deserves so much more respect and love.
The 959 was fantastic, no doubt. And it certainly had many firsts on a production road car. But saying it is THE reason we have those things today is a tad bit silly. That suggests nobody else would have thought up things like ABS or TPMS on their own eventually. Maybe the 959 sped things up, but the odds that nobody else would have ever had any of those ideas is unlikely.
I think your videos deserve an actual series on t.v. or streaming apps. They are better then most car documentaries that have professional budgets. Thank you for putting in such an effort to make them because its so rare to find car videos that are both educational and entertaining at the same time.
I appreciate that! I kinda prefer them here because tv and streaming apps require someone to pay for them. They’d be restricted to certain regions or financial situations and I believe history should be free for everyone

Squidd is far to humble - he's a brilliant leader in the truest sense. A person who has grand visions and is able to share, or rather force an infection of, those visions onto others. We are merely swept up in the tide.
My biggest takeaway from this video is just how incredible Porsche's marketing was. Those intercut ads are stunning.
Great work as always, Squidd!
The greatest car channel on UA-cam and it’s not even close. Savage geese, throttle house and others do amazing reviews and create good content but there’s not a channel on UA-cam that matches the quality, editing, voice over audio, writing or beauty of execution of this channel. I’ve never seen a bad video here (the motorcycle one may not have gotten the views but well worth the time spent) and this one is a show of growth and commitment to quality that will keep me watching everything you make for decades. You could make the next one about matchbox cars and I’d watch it.
Agreed, the history The Squidd throws at us to tell a complete story is among the best!

Thanks Alex, DJ, and Ken for making this video possible. The 959 was the summation of my car enthusiasm as a teenager in highschool. This brings it all back and the history and insight of the 959 shared in this video makes it all the more special to me.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The wheels and tires on the 959 are even more special than "just" hollow spokes and TPMS. They featured Dunlop's Denloc system that secured the tire to the wheel by a special design. So those Bridgestone tires ended up with some runflat capabilities aswell. It's a similar, discontinued technology like Michelin's TRX approach.
There are few other brands that champion their motorsports program and privateer support quite like Porsche (Hyundai is probably the best student of Porsche's dedication). Thanks for showing their history warts and all!

@@the.squidd Being a huge Nismo guy (my trackday toy is an h-shift G35 with all the SPL Parts and Z1 bits with some Öhlins dampers/Swift coils), you rung my bell with the Nissan GT-R (Godzilla) video, doing a Hyundai (and Kia) video showing how they went from a brand where '90s kids wanted their mom to drop them off two blocks away from school to avoid bullying for being poor, to being one of the few brands to push the limits with their N brand track support and soccer moms getting into fist fights in show rooms over the last CUV in inventory would be amazing!

@@the.squidd merry chrismas and for in Germany WE say "gute Vorsätze" means good targets for the new year 1mio my friend
I have been watching your videos since your first and honestly you guys are the reason my interest in cars skyrocketed. The quality and effort of everyone shines through the pieces you guys make and I am so glad I found this channel. I know you guys will last for years to come and I will make sure to always be there rooting for ya.
Thank you my friend, and bonus points for the F-16 profile pic. makes me wanna boot up DCS and do some sorties.
@@the.squidd nothing stopping you from doing so
Thank you and your whole team for making those videos. Every one of them makes me sit on the edge of my sit. Happy holidays!
One of the best summaries of my Dad's time at Porsche. He and Bott were quite a team. Thanks so much!
Once again I am baffled about how 3 of you can make a video that rivals, or exceeds the quality and the enthusiasm of the car shows that are in tv. You fuel my passion for the car industry and give me knowledge that I Cheris!
Thank you for this high quality!
Sometimes, with a smaller crew or a smaller machine, things are simpler and you can just do the thing you want to do without a lot getting in the way.
@@the.squidd Keep up the good work, and keep the excellent content coming!
Research, hocking the attention, packaging and presentation. All of it looks like a perfectly planned masterpiece.
Good Job. This channel has my heart!
I first saw the 959 in the Summer of '86; my friend Andy had a magazine article framed on his wall. I fell in love instantly, and it's been my absolute favorite car ever since. It would be my lotto car for sure. So, I'll likely never own one, but I can watch & enjoy your great video. Thanks.
Here’s hoping you one day at least can sit in one! I’ll likely never own my dream cars either but it is nice to know they exist
And kudos to your crew for the seamless flow of word and visual.....safe and prosperous Xmas and new year............
Man I love how you aren't biased on any brand, you just straight speak facts
I am definitely biased on some things, but that doesn't mean I don't respect what matters. I honestly could never see myself owning a Porsche, but I am so glad they exist.
Thank you to you and your team for the amazing productions. They're not just videos but historic documentaries. Looking forward to more in 2024!
Our pleasure!
To Alex, DJ and Ken... thank you so much for such great content!

Great stuff as always mate, truly brilliantly narrated.
This dude makes THE best automobile documentaries - hands down.👏
Thank you very much Alex, DJ and Ken. The content is really great and more... It's not just entertainment, it's a history lesson. It's fuel for our love and passion for cars. It's everything... ❤❤❤
All of your Documentaries are awesome the writing the music the montage the speaking they gave tears to my eyes every time
I can no longer keep track of how many times this man's story telling has brought me to tears. F**king god-tier.
Squidd you & your team are evolving exponentially ! Progressing with quality of the content with every new video, but this one is special - like the 959 itself. Kudos
