I made a similar comment on Owen’s page the other day. You guys, lifting folks up simply to help, spurring people to be their best selves is a lesson we all should both admire and follow. I learned it at UVA. I followed the principle for 50 years as an appellate counsel and in my normal life. Salute.
Student pilot here!! Juggling United, or southwest. United because I come from a United family, and southwest because of the culture and because I am just a huge fan of 737’s. I’m going to the navy to be aircrew man or aviation maintenance, and to get a degree or two. And hopefully I’ll be in that office within the next 10years or so. Much love Ernie. Thanks for the inspiration!!!
I remember my interview in ‘99. It was the most difficult interview because Southwest interviewers are so disarming. You really had to stay on your professional toes. Definitely the most comfortable interview I ever had. I, regrettably, turned down the SWA offer and was hired with my Atlanta based airline. Big mistake. When we went bankrupt in 2006, it was mayhem. My wife, who accepted the SWA offer, has made more than me over our entire careers. She has a much better retirement than I do and I’m a heavy Captain. My 25 years in the airline industry has been complete turmoil. My wife? She smiles and enjoys her profession. Only now am I enjoying flying at my company. Great video Ern! I wish I would have accepted the offer years ago but once you made the choice of companies in this industry, you’re stuck.
I hardly feel sorry for you. Since 2008 you have experienced nothing but pay raises, bonus checks and Green Slips in addition to being put three years ahead of the company you merged with. Add to that the top 1800 retired early and you advanced not to mention when another large group took early retirement around 2004. I was hired in '85 and went through far more than you. A two income family making close to a million bucks/yr and you are complaining? Good grief. Who wants to fly a 737 their whole life.
@@jcheck6 Actually, a two income family making more than a million/year (1.4+). Frankly, I wasn’t looking for your sympathy. Who wants to fly a 737 for their whole life? Me! I would’ve made more in my career
Super competitive means that when you get on a plane, the best pilots are gonna be in that cockpit. A win for the industry I'd say! Keep up the good work Ern!
Its really a pleasure to see what you are doing clarifying, explaining and show how Aviation is, i thoroughly enjoy these vids even as a European F/O, its really helpful for alot of people.
Great, you’re giving me PTSD flashbacks to my 91’ interview with TWA. It turned out to be a great few years on the 727 than I started hauling boxes for a living . Last time I had an interview was when I started with UPS in 94. Really odd how I remember almost everything from both of those days, seems so long ago hard to believe that I am closer to getting my wings clipped by the government now for mandatory but I still have a few yrs left . Love your videos and the behind the scenes
Thanks Ern for video, even though I am too old, lost PPL years ago Health I find what you can show us what it’s like at Headquarters at SWA, and giving heads-up for pilots being interviewed how competitive all airlines are being. Good luck to all being interviewed for SWA, you are the future captain’s.-Kenny
Great vid Ern! I 100% agree with logbook accuracy. I can also add that candidates proof read their application 100x over. Grammar and punctuation has to be on point!
Ernie, I hope that when I apply on your next opening windows, I get you as an interviewer. You have all the characteristics that I show on a daily basis at Republic. Can't wait to come over to the airline with a bunch of Heart. Keep up the good work.... CYA
I prefer seeing a neatly hand written and well maintained hard copy logbook over a digital one. I really take pride in filling mine out neatly and it looks sweet. And yes it is 100% water tight.
Thank you for the great videos! I am enrolled in the destination 225 program and will be starting in June. I can't wait to start and to be a part of such a great airline.
Ernie , awesome video ! Truly enjoyed ! Thank you for taking the time to show this topic ! Truly informative and diligent ! You are a true and genuine professional ! 🙏🏻
This is awesome. Mil guy, I interviewed last year and now am in the deferred CJO pool - really enjoyed the process and felt like everyone at SWA did a great job of creating a professional and relaxed environment! Hoping everything works out
I'm 71, so I doubt an interview with an airline is in my future. X-Plane does not check log books or ask questions. 😄 Thanks for the peek inside the process. Hats off to the men and women who have prepared to excel under pressure both in the cockpit and the interview room. Makes me squirm just hearing you describe it.
Wow! I was nervous just watching this video! Great, Informative. Great cinematography, great audio. I'm not a pilot, but this was exciting. All the best Shaun 🦉of New York City🗽☕
Not so strict or competitive based on what I know, maybe SW is the only big carrier that is tightening things down. Here is why: 3 FOs from regionals (FO's and not captains, think about that alone) were recently interviewed at another major carrier, while waiting to be called back to be interviewed they were in a waiting room. Another pilot walked in and they began asking that pilot some questions to pass the time. What equipment are you on? "Huh". What airplane do you fly is what we mean by that question. "Oh". That pilot told them the model of a corporate jet that they were an FO in. So someone asked, What is the max altitude that plane flies at? "I don't know". Another pilot asked, How fast does it fly? "I don't know that either." Apparently you could hear a pin drop at that moment until that corporate FO said, "Well, I just handle the radios." One of the 3 FO's from the regionals asked, Just curious as to how many hours you have? "250." Ok, on that jet? "No, TT." That person was hired and is now in the right seat of a 757. That story is one of many.
I’m not a Pilot yet, need a little bit more money saved up. But this video was very informative for someone interested in being a commercial pilot in the future. Definitely going to book mark this video. This subject does not seem to be a popular one, thanks for making this video. Hopefully I’ll have my ATP by the time I’m 22 or 23:) Cheers, Ern
Hey Ernie can you imagine the poor nervous applicant waiting in the room and you walk out and call their name ,i think it's called a HOLLY sh*t moment 😅😅😅😅 Very interesting behind the scenes look at what goes on Thanks Mate Kym Adelaide
Hi Capt. Really good video and interview transparency IMO 👍 I'm a 12,000 hour ex captain on an expired IR EASA ticket who lost my job with COVID in Feb, 2020. since then, I haven't got a job in anything, despite over 1000 resume's and job application posted in just about every job in every industry I could find. My only excuse is I'm 52, COVID and a UK resident, stuck with BREXIT, but a US citizen with an old FAA commercial from the 90's and we were locked down for 2 years with COVID restrictions in the UK making keeping my IR and 90 day currency impossible to keep current. what chance with SW would I have if I got my FAA ticket back current after 4 and 1/2 years? Possible Interview or not?
Certainly! Here's a revised version of your paragraph for clarity and conciseness: Hey Erni, I'm a huge fan of your UA-cam channel. I just wanted to express my gratitude for your recent video. It provided valuable insights into the hiring process for airline pilots, particularly with Southwest Airlines. Your tips on maintaining a thorough and error-free logbook were especially helpful. I appreciate your suggestion about using a digital logbook for its professionalism and clarity. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind when I apply for airlines in the future. Thank you for your informative content, and keep up the great work!
For one of my classes at school, we get internships and hace to go through the interview process. I had an interview to be a ground handler at one of the Airports like 30 minutes away from me and I had two people interview me. One of which I knew previously and my uncle also knows. My uncle is a previous Private pilot. Anyway, I was as prepared as I could have gotten and I didn't get it. It's fine since KIKV is too far I would have loved to be out by aircraft tho. The internship I ended up getting, hate I love it it's another one of my passions and I've fallen in love with it. My name as it states CarsNJets. The interview this time was much more laid back and a whole lot less pressure on me. I ended up getting it. Could you give me some interview tips for Aviation-related interviews Ernie?
I’m glad to hear things are going to get more competitive… but how? There’s a massive pilot shortage. The airline I fly for has been hiring anyone for the last two years now and likely won’t stop anytime soon ……
I'm an old lady now (or getting there) but back when I was a little girl my dream job was to be an airline pilot. Now I watch your videos and imagine what might have been, and it's fun (and a little scary tbh). I hope you interview a few young ladies and that they knock it out of the park!
Found your channel a few months ago. I am hooked. I do, however, wonder how you are permitted by your airline to post such details. Other channels I have seen are much more vague.
I know this is off topic… And I also know that Southwest has an amazing safety record. But how do you feel about the Boeing 737 max issues? Are you confident in the safety precautions of southwest? Just curious because I fly them and has been in the back of my mind. Cheers!
Hi! I'm currently a ramp agent with Alaska and trying for flight attendant! I've been getting a few interviews but no offers yet. I'll keep trying! How often do you fly into SNA?
Should be lot's of pilots to interview, Lynx Airlines with a fleet of MAX's just closed down with at least one hundred pilots out of work, unfortunately.
I’m a little confused with what mgmt is seeing. Per TSA stats, boardings are exceeding last year (except for two days this year), and last year exceeded pre-pandemic levels. Are they seeing bookings start to slow? It doesn’t seem so when I booked summer travel. Full planes and full price. Just curious why it’s getting more competitive, as you say.
I’d love to work for Southwest some day. I’m currently still trying to get on with a regional at the moment. If I only have one check ride failure on my PRD from 2017, does that automatically disqualify me from working at Southwest?
Really appreciate Southwest's and your transparency about the realities of pilot hiring right now - it is motivation. Please keep it up!
Another awesome version of your ability to get the message out to help others..Thanks Ernie!!!!
My pleasure! I want to see you all get to your dream job.
Even an 89 year old ex pilot enjoyed this. Great job Ernie!

Ahhh man, the same room and look as back in 2006 during my interview 😁 It is mostly the same as back then, with some minor changes. Good luck yall!

My man Captain Phil H!! What a cool dude he is. He interviewed me at SWA. Living legend!
THanks for the vid. I put life on hold, and I'm working on career 2.0. I'm 52, and almost finished with my IR. Hope to have my CFI by the fall.

I have an interview coming soon, your video was just recommended. thanks Ern,
The grab-and-go breakfast burritos are great. They usually have a big spread of them out on the week day mornings at the TOPs building where I work :)

True but this is the best time to get yourself in position for the interview when they start up again. Progress is made in the off season. Good luck!

Would you still want my paper books, if I entered all my previous time into an electronic logbook, would pictures of checkrides etc count?
Interview: so what are these msfs hours in your book? Says you flew for PMDG? Tell me about that
Confused a bit, are you saying it’s more competitive than normal? I thought pilots were in high demand
