    Jackie led a tumultuous life. He was shot and lost a kidney. Some of his children died young. At his peak the avg American was earning 5k per year. He was making 265k per year which led him to IRS problems. He charted over 50 hit singles and 6 reached the top ten. One of the great early soul singers to emerge on the scene.

    That's why he was called "Mr. Excitement"! My man wasn't dancing he was FLOATING and FLYING!. All that, while his singing was vibrating, swirling, comin' down ...almost landing ... skimmin' the ground ... then back up towards the heavens! Jackie was Golden Gloves boxer. And used to play the chitterling circuit along with a lot of black artists. one night the cops took a bus load of performers into the woods or some lonely spot robbed them all , Jackie was the only one who had anything to say about it and got a real good beating for his troubles . Not long after this Ray Charles refused to play to segragated audiences, and couldn't play in Georgia for years. Until Georgia apologised and made Rays song their state song. Other songs from Jackie you would love are . I get the sweetest feeling, to be loved , the up tempo song I think you are talking about is Reet Petite. If you review Elvis return to sender (the movie clip) Elvis is singing in a bar and Jackie is in the audience with his back to the camera. Also there was a dance called the jerk which was also called do the Jackie Wilson, he had a four octave range and was known as mr excitement.

      Thank you for posting this comment. This was the real life experience of many black Americans and for many black Americans, it still is. American Bandstand gave us a controlled view of black American vocalists. I really appreciate hearing the back story that pull back the curtain on how Jim Crow and the recording industry kept black Americans in their place.

    Watching this again reminds me that Jackie Wilson was (is) FANTASTIC! Check him out as lead
    singer of Billy Ward & the Dominoes on "Stardust" (1957), or his greatest hits LP on Coral.
    And yes, Elvis LOVED Jackie's voice. Almost operatic. Barry Gordy wrote "Lonely Teardrops",
    took the money and started Motown Records! God bless you Tye.....

    Jackie Wilson was one of Elvis' biggest influences, check out "Reet Petite". Along with the great Roy Hamilton, influenced Elvis' whole style.

    • @RobinMarkowitzcoolmedia
      @RobinMarkowitzcoolmedia 5 років тому +3

      It was mutual. His first record was given an Elvis-style treatment. Later that year, Elvis saw him as a member of Billy Ward's Dominoes. Elvis already knew Billy Ward personally. Elvis went crazy for this guy! Well, they met and it was a mutual admiration society for the rest of their lives. When Jackie had his eventual fatal circulatory collapse about a year before Elvis died, Elvis paid Jackie's medical bills.
      After that, Michael Jackson did so. Jackie Wilson meant a lot to Michael when he was a little kid. He idolized him.
      I don't know what song you're thinking of because they were all wonderful. Berry Gordy wrote Jackie's material, but did not sign him to Motown. I don't know what went wrong there, but it was terrible for Jackie's career. He should have been a much bigger star and Motown would have provided that opportunity.

      @@jrh1118 He very much enjoyed Jackie's version. And he did try to put on what he called a "Yankee" accent on the Ed Sullivan show. He thought Wilson cut him on "Don't Be Cruel," but not on Hound Dog. And he LOVED what he saw in "them feets were going in and out." And Elvis became, in 1957, more of a dancer than a wiggler. Much later, they both could do each other.

  • @RichZFishes
    @RichZFishes 4 роки тому

    Before setting out on a solo career, Jackie Wilson was the 2nd GREAT lead singer of the Billy Ward's Dominos, following Clyde McPhatter and preceding Gene Mumford. (actually, 17 different voices sang lead on at least one Dominoes release over the group's lifespan, but the three listed were the truly memorable ones). "Lonely Teardrops" was his biggest selling record and became his signature song for the rest of his career. It's the song that Wilson was singing when he had a heart attack on stage, while performing in a Dick Clark concert in 1975. He fell to the floor directly after singing the line, "My heart is crying." Since he was known for his on stage theatrics, the audience thought it part of the show and applauded. Cornell Gunter (a veteran of many West Coast vocal groups of the 50s and 60s) was with the Coasters at the time, and was watching from back stage. He was the first to realize that Wilson wasn't breathing, and rushed out to give him CPR. He was revived, but spent most of the next nine years drifting between comatose and "concious but unresponsive" states, until passing at the age of 49 in early 1984.

      (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher was probably his most popular song and it was used beautifully in Ghostbusters 2. In Coming to America, Eddie Murphy sings another of Jackie Wilson's hits, To Be Loved, which has the most amazing vocals in it. While people certainly know and remember Jackie Wilson, I do think he gets overlooked when people think about great male vocalists of the era.

    Jackie Wilson was in a class by himself! This man could do unheard of things with his voice, he could flip, and put on a show that would make the women swoon! And his cousin Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops was no joke either! (Another cousin was with The Contours and Levi's brother was the lead voice of 100 Proof Aged in Soul) !And many of his early hits were written by Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records. You MUST hear "To Be Loved", "Higher and Higher", "That's Why I Love You So" and "Whispers (Getting Louder)!

    He was known as MR EXCITEMENT in his time 1956-1975. He had a stroke while performing on stage in 1975 and died 10 years later after being in a prolonged coma. He was only 49 when he passed away. The man is a legend. Check out Baby Workout.

    One of Rocks greatest voices....was appearing at a club in South Jersey and suffered a stroke during his performance....was buried in an unmarked grave....I believe Stevie Wonder paid for a headstone for this brilliant performer....

    Elvis was talking about Jackie (in The Million Dollar Quartet) how he saw this guy singing Don't Be Cruel and phrased the word "tel-e-phone". Elvis when he was on Ed Sullivan show, used Jackie's phrasing as he sung don't be cruel.

    He's a little-known treasure from the 1950s. They used to call him "Mr. Excitement." Eddie Murphy used his ballad, "To Be Loved" in a scene in "Trading Places" or "Coming To America" I forget which.

    I was thinking the movie was "Dirty Dancing" but it's not listed on the soundtrack. If it was in the movie it was only a portion. Now I have to watch the movie for the zillionth time to find out. I am loving these classics so please keep them coming.

    The best thing to come out of the 60's is the music and the cars. I am so glad I was around to see/hear both. Do you remember MAMA's family? Vicki Lawrence (MAMA) sang a song called "that's the night that the lights went out in georgia". I would love your reaction to that song.

      @@jojosewist8921 No she didn't
      She sang Ode to Billie Joe a d Fancy but Vicki recorded the demo and her husband couldn't sell it so he had her record it. Years later Reba McEntire recorded it. I just saw this story on a video with Reba and Vicki singing the song together. That's where the entire story came out about why Vicki Lawrence recorded it to begin with.
