@DJ L33 I agree. It's funny cause in Jamaica where I'm from there are many races and we mostly all talk and sound the same because so a Chinese or White Jamaican artist sounds like what we would consider a typical Jamaican artist (i.e. Black). Now with Bobby Caldwell his sound is not typical of a white American artist because Black and White people in the US generally had such distinct music genres, speak different and just sound different when they sing. The entirety of that recording is on point. Arrangement, Groove, and that sweet sweet funky thang. He made Black music, in a way that had sincerity, integrity and true respect, reverence, and understanding of Black music and the style of the 70’s. 🤘🏾
@@madmonkmedicine , I don't disagree, and I love the track as he performed it. It's really good on vinyl and high quality sound systems, but I find Go West's production to be a bit better. It's little things, but for me GW is a better track. I also think that while 70s studio production methods were very good, when the 80s rolled around, especially mid 80s, you had more dynamic range available to play with. You could get more punchy bass tones , bass drums, low Hrz synths, and had more head room for high to expand without distortion or having to artificially cancel noise. You had better microphone tech for recording. I think that if Caldwell had cut that same track in the same period that GW did, it would be as good or better. There was just so much more available to sound board engineers and producers, not just in equipment, but in techniques. Little things like mic placement, things learned by experimentation along the way. Finally, each person's ear is tuned differently, and not everyone gets the same vibe. So, I'm not saying one is right and one is wrong, just that my personal opinion is that the GW version is better, at least to my ears. The main thing is both are fantastic and we can enjoy them both, and GW thought enough of the track to cover it.
Moses, I think you'd like a lot of GW's originals as well. Here's their live version of this song though, I think you'll enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/AEYXLZ6oO9M/v-deo.html
I am a child of the sixties and seventies. I have also been a musician for over 30 years. I have lived through the rise of American rock and roll, the British invasion, the Motown sound, American folk singers. As a performer I have played thousands of classical and jazz standards, and music from the Great American Songbook. I have seen disco come and go. I witnessed the birth of punk rock, new wave, rap and hip hop, 80's hair bands, heavy metal music, grunge rock, boy bands and girl groups, the country music explosion, techno music and the music we listen to today. With all that being said Bobby Caldwell is by far my favorite Male vocal of all time and you can see I have a huge list that I can choose from. He may not have the hits like some of my other favorites but he sure can sing. I have had the privilege to see him perform live twice. Great Voice.
1978 is when this song came out . I was 17 in high school - a totally white high school ! Everyone loved this song . I remember hearing it play on every radio station , every party and school dance ! Good times 🤗
Got to see the man in person. Gave a 100% of his soul when he sang. He was labeled as a " modern" jazz singer back when he was popular. Glad he has popped up again after so many years. Hope he's in singer's heaven smiling down at his new fans.
My entire 48 years on this earth and only a month ago I found out he was not black. I was amazed!!!!! One of my favorite songs from back in the day. Now I can't stop listening to this.
Me too! I thought he was black too! Way back when Rick Astley first released “never gonna give you up” everyone thought he was black too! Then they saw this pale ginger guy from the north of England! lololol On a side note, always loved this song, I first heard this in a DJ’s set in Ibiza in the summer of 97’, Bobby Caldwell was so underrated and deserved much bigger success.
I'm from L.A. and back in 1993, a radio station 92.3 the Beat, there was a dj named Theo who everyone thought was black for the past 4 or 5 years. He ended up being Japanese.
Big fan of Bobby Caldwell here, great voice. You need to check out Boz Scaggs, maybe the quintessential blue eyed soul artist, Lowdown, Silk Degrees and the list is just starting.

In the UK, in the 80s, was born the Rare Groove movement and this song is a staple of that movement. Funny watching your reaction when you realised he was white. And you know the video was purposely shot with that reveal in the beginning, playing on the fact that EVERYONE at the time thought the singer was black!
Yep. He said in an interview the record company weren't sure how to market him, so he came up with the idea of using a silhouette on the album cover, and they used the same set for the promo clip.

Hi Just heard this old skool tune at a festival 2 weeks ago in the UK. I knew this song from back in the day and thought let me look up that tune. I was a bit surprised as I only ever heard it on black pirate/underground radio stations here. He has a cool voice and our souls have no colour. One love, unity consciousness! 💜
I just came across your channel... while searching Bobby Caldwell. What you said in the beginning about " don't subscribe until you have watched some of my content first, etc. I appreciate your honesty in giving the viewers an option.. 👍God bless you
See the setup for the video with the bench and him sitting there in shadow? They did the same thing for the cover of his debut album. They wanted people to buy his album for the music first, because they understood that people would have been weirded out at the time by seeing a white guy on the cover. Black listeners didn't know Bobby was white when he released this album and didn't know he was white when they went to see him perform for the first time. They basically had your reaction when he went out on stage, but immediately approved, because, well, just listen to him! It must have been interesting to be a fly on the wall during that first reveal back in the day.
The amazing Jeff Porcaro on those drums, who also played with Michael McDonald (another Blue Eyed Soul). This is such a beautiful track. When I was growing up in Little Rock, AR they played lots of Bobby on mostly Jazz and Soul radio stations, and my mother and I had no idea he has white until she saw him perform. He's still performing to this day.
As a massive soul fan since the 80's, and on buying this song when it was released back then, I have always thought he was black, until I watched this video. I am just as surprised!! It's an amazing song!!!
This song goes way back for me and every time I heard this song I thought wow this brother has a great voice then when I found out he wasn't a brother it shocked me but it showed me that just because you sound like a brother doesn't mean you are. This dude has more of a brother voice than some brothers out there. Enjoy the great song and you're right you're reaction was spot-on predictable. LOL

Charles B. Bobby Caldwell is the only “Blue Eyed Soul” performer to precisely and unpretentiously nail that sweet, funky, soul, thang like a real Black Soul Sanger!
The song: excellent. Ty’s reaction: PRICELESS!
1978 is when this song came out . I was 17 in high school - a totally white high school ! Everyone loved this song . I remember hearing it play on every radio station , every party and school dance ! Good times 🤗
same here
i thought he was black the first time I heard him too. Great performer.
I thought it was a black group for years when I used to hear it.
Rip Bobby. This the first thing I thought of when he passed
Got to see the man in person. Gave a 100% of his soul when he sang. He was labeled as a " modern" jazz singer back when he was popular. Glad he has popped up again after so many years. Hope he's in singer's heaven smiling down at his new fans.
*strong squint* Is that a white dude....*epic reveal* Nah, he can't be white. He still has a plate from last night family cookout in his hands.
RIP Bobby.
He sounds black. And that's fine. Not a THING wrong with recognizing that.
Rest in Peace Bobby Caldwell!!
then and now, my love for this music has not change..i soo love this bobby caldwell..
I've spent the day laughing at your facial and body movements. You aren't angry you are happy and surprised., It makes me happy.
That dude had a Barry White voice looking like Mr Miagi lol. I remember the girls were shook when they saw Theo
I am 63.I have listened to this song for years and didn't know not that it matters.great song
Tavis Smiley interviewed him, and he said he refused to believe it for a while.
Im 46 and i never saw what Bobbycaldwell
looked like until recently.l heard this song when I was a kid and i just knew he was black
Big fan of Bobby Caldwell here, great voice.
You need to check out Boz Scaggs, maybe the quintessential blue eyed soul artist, Lowdown, Silk Degrees and the list is just starting.
Big big Boz Skaggs fan for decades.
I LOVE BOZ SCAGGS !
Terry Esrom Lowdown is MY FRICKIN’ JAM!!!
@@jasmineduran6731 WHERE ARE YOU FROM? 🤗
Barbara Colon I live in Arizona. I heard of the song on old school radio stations and I just love it! ❤️💖 Excuse the enthusiasm; I just really dig the song. ☺️
In the UK, in the 80s, was born the Rare Groove movement and this song is a staple of that movement. Funny watching your reaction when you realised he was white. And you know the video was purposely shot with that reveal in the beginning, playing on the fact that EVERYONE at the time thought the singer was black!
Indeed. On the album he’s got his hat brim down in the shadows, so folks would assume he was Black.🤘🏾
Yep. He said in an interview the record company weren't sure how to market him, so he came up with the idea of using a silhouette on the album cover, and they used the same set for the promo clip.
Solar and jfm wicked stations
1:48 the lean in killed me. “Brighten the light”
The mix of horns and bass plus his wonderful voice could make anyone's jaw drop!
The hidden silhouette of him at the beginning of his music video made your reaction even more priceless omg lol 😂👌🏼
No we can't get away from it. I have always thought this was a black man singing it! Just like I can't get away from people thinking I'm black just because of my name!!! Alot of times I just go along with it. I guess I'm not PC! But I am a MRMI!!! LOL 🤣
@@Septima68 like I never heard that before. And before everyone starts with all the other Italian names. Let me give you something else to have fun with.... If all y'all think you can handle it.... For almost 37 year's my last name was one all will recognize from the movies hint 007 is my Daddy!!!! Still want to make fun of my name? LOL 🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol as soon as i read "because of my name" i looked at your name and was like hell nah LaSanja is black
@@notgaybear5544 believe it or not no one in my hometown ever associated my name as black. As a matter of fact the first black child was named after me. I worked with her mother who thought my name was beautiful. It wasn't until the late 80's early'90's that people started associating my name with a black person. Before that it was just all the Italian food names and then with Bond for a last name came "I bet James is you Dad". Now that was fun for me because I got to say "as a matter of fact he is.". Ever now and then I would get and your uncle is James Bond so I would have to correct them! LOL 🤣 🤣🤣🤣 My mama want my sister and I to have unique names she did a great job with mine!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of my favorites. Tupacs Do for Love was good to sample this. Love both versions. Keep up the great work.
And Tatyana Ali's Boy You Knock Me Out.
Bobby is our brother from another mother. He is amazing! Nothing but amazing!
When this song first broke in the 70s EVERYBODY in the hood swore this kat was black. He was confused with Mr. Pebo Bryson constantly.
Am I the only one who thinks this guy reacting to the video is really attractive .. love from India
This never gets old! Your reactions are priceless 🤣🤣🤣
Glad you enjoyed
My whole childhood, I heard this song so much as a kid. I even thought he was black. I was so shocked when I heard he was white 😂
He does sound Black. I grew up thinking he was. This was my mom’s jam and subsequently mine. The video still trips me out. Great soulful voice 😍
It truly is soul night. I'm liking this 💘
I'm white and I didn't take it that way. I heard it as you were saying it was a white guy doing soul for soul's sake. No crossover just true soul. That's the reverse of In Living Color. I love that song too because it's a TRUE rock song coming from black guys. I get where you're coming from. That's how I took it anyway.
I love how you can just see his wheels spinning when Bobby steps into the light - LMAAOO
RIP, Bobby Caldwell.
r.i.p. Bobby.
One of the best songs.....EVER.
Dude had SOUL thou
Wats more surprising is so many rappers sampled his songs
"Cammon's" light is also a classis sample frm this dude
I always thought he was a black dude, too.
Bobby Caldwell actually won “Bilboard’s Best new Black Artist” in 1979. Fact.
I remember when this song was on the radio. 🫢
Hahaha, that's my jam and again I love all of your facial reactions. You are so fun & comical.
Don’t feel bad- I thought the same thing
Your profile picture though rotf
1:49 and 1:58 was the moments we all waited for LMAO
Hi Just heard this old skool tune at a festival 2 weeks ago in the UK. I knew this song from back in the day and thought let me look up that tune. I was a bit surprised as I only ever heard it on black pirate/underground radio stations here. He has a cool voice and our souls have no colour. One love, unity consciousness! 💜
I just came across your channel... while searching Bobby Caldwell. What you said in the beginning about " don't subscribe until you have watched some of my content first, etc. I appreciate your honesty in giving the viewers an option.. 👍God bless you
Haha!! It's a white dude!!
I take your comment "he sounds like a black man singing" as a compliment. Thank you for your honesty and I appreciate your true perspective
Bobby Caldwell is a true classic. Great reaction. 💗
LOL
Indiana Jones can get it. 🤣🤣
No i cant
Ryan 😂😂😂😂 Bruh, golden comment!
😂😂😂
I absolutely LOVE your reaction man. Priceless!
I'm 55, it's nice to hear young ones not know grove from my time. Enjoy!
I totally understand where your coming from MRM., he sounds really soulful. I'm Puerto Rican and I even thought it was a black artist.
1:49 You could literally see what he was thinking: "Is that a white guy?"
His reactions all throughout this video after he learned about Bobby Caldwell had me sobbing😃
I really enjoy watching you young cats hearing these classic jams for the first time.
You don't have to EXPLAIN YOURSELF, he does sound black , this is a Soulful Sound. one great sound., I rolled off my chair from your expression, I loved this SONG alot, great times.
