The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Calling on (Black Hollywood) Mr. Jackie Wilson story needs to be told. He was such an influence to so many artists from Elvis to Michael Jackson. There is a generation who don't even know about him. Mr.Jackie Wilson is a legend & he should never be forgotten.
Patti LaBelle said in her book that he sexually accosted her backstage, so I doubt he'll ever get a biopic.
@@ThatsJustMyBabyDaddy why not? Alfred Hitchcock did exactly the same thing with Tippi Hedren. But after she spurned his advances he effectively ruined her acting cat, but he still had a bio in his name
La Bamba, which is Valens movie, showcases Jackie a bit , but yes, a movie is warranted. Bruno Mars may be a good choice.
Yes and his son can portray him
@@FeloniusMonkInGSharp let his own spitting image of him play that part
That song. That artist. He was and remains an historical figure in the world of popular music. Once you saw and heard him, you knew you had witnessed something very special.
Others might have mentioned this already, but this was the song he was performing when he suffered the heart attack that would eventually end his life. He was performing at the Latin Casino in my home town of Cherry Hill NJ in September of 1975. On the line "My heart is crying, crying" he touched his heart, as he always did in this part of the song, and collapsed on stage. People at first thought it was part of his stage act. God rest his soul. We lost a great talent way too soon at age 49.
@Mac Fields Yes, he was quite a remarkable talent. What a voice! There are several books about his life and music out there. His life was somewhat unorthodox, to say the least. He left a trail of women and children-- this led to a battle over his estate and who was going to have the power of attorney to direct his medical decisions. I had always wondered why he was never transferred out of the NJ nursing home back to his home area of Detroit, and this is the reason. A lot of legal wrangling.
Beautifully told.
i just read that elvis helped pay for his medical bills after that heart attack because he regarded jackie as an equal.
That would be years later
Ohh, I never knew that. How sad, I have tears in my eyes. God bless him, he'll always be the best .
The person who voted thumbs down is shedding lonely teardrops.
@Ann Clark 7 idiots and counting...

Cuz he's alone!

Elvis, the best selling recording artist of all time!
The great Jackie Wilson
Every performance of his was spectacular. You can see how much artists from Sam Cooke to James Brown took from him.
@@sheilamacdougal9948
What did Sam Cooke take from Jackie Wilson ?
James Brown had his first #1 hit in 1956. This video is of 1962.

That’s why they call him Mr. entertainment.
Ohh, man, that was incredible. He did it faster than usual. This is totally live, no record here. The best performance of this song I ever saw and my favorite of all. I was wondering if he wasn't gonna do the split, but he did. He was a professional dancer. Only a pro or an athlete could get up from the floor with just the strength of his legs. Just incredible, a true performer.
He was a former boxer.
He was awesome, I always come back here to listen to this version because I personally think it’s way better than the original studio recording of the song.
I will say the same thing I said when I saw this on the Ed Sullivan Show. Where is the band? You know? Where is the band, not to mention the backup singers?
that spin, and signature knee drop then sliding back up to a stance was just epic!!! 👌🏻
NOBODY - can touch this guy's outrageous performance!
Without a shadow of a doubt!
Amen!
A legend! Pure excitement!
He is alright but nothing compared to Elvis Presley....
@@ethelcross3599 A. Butler is a superb actor...NOBODY anywhere can be ELVIS. all over again obviously.
Absolutely live, even the fingers snaps and footsteps was captured in the mic

like so many of that era! they were great. no smoke and mirrors just talent
Yeah at first I thought it was lip syncing until I heard all the claps! I guess the mics over his head :) lol such a great performance
That mic was definitely on lol
Quem sabe faz ao vivo....Sensacional !🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
Wow!!! What a performance, one of the true great performers in History, God bless you Jackie Wilson ❤
If I recall correctly, this was something of a comeback performance for Jackie in '62. Apparently, he received a near fatal knife stab from an ex-girlfriend about year earlier. He was on the mend for a few months, but man, did he rebound! Went on to do a great live album around the time this episode aired. This very performance was even featured in a BEST OF VHS collection back in the late 90's. I should know, I had that set from TIME-LIFE Home Video before switching to DVDs by 2003.
He was SHOT, not knifed, by one of his lovers. An important difference to note when you realize all of his dancing and active performances thereafter took place with a bullet lodged in his back, so close to his spine it couldn’t be removed.
JW was a huge influence on Elvis, James Brown and Michael Jackson.
He wasn't even sweating after his knee drops! When he collapsed onstage
in 1975, Elvis paid for all his medical bills.
Gone, never to be forgotten.
A very young Michael Jackson was watching this episode from his home in Gary, Indiana....who could have known what would happen just a few years later
Before they were 'known', Jackie put the Jacksons on his shows.
True. Those moves were taken by Michael
Jackie was one of the baddest dancer we have had just lost him to early due to the stroke rip the world lost a real showman Memphis
@@miltonmurray5871 Pure talent and class. No crotch grabbing or other sensationalism. Just Jackie. The best!
My youth, gone so fast, too fast! One of the best....
How can you not smile watching this? 😁😁😁 Gotta love Jackie Wilson
They don't make them like this anymore. Jackie Wilson will always be a classic.
Jackie Wilson was my favorite solo soul singer. When I was in the Marine Corps and deployed to Vietnam, I always had his voice and songs on my mind. Whenever we visited a night club in the Pacific, I imitated his dancing style and everybody else in the club would stop to watch me and the girl I with dance. Jackie Wilson was truly a great inspiration to me and many others. RIP Jackie.
A spectacular performer and a gentlemen, a humanitarian and a great soul. His music inspires me always. Love Jackie Wilson. Rest your soul in God's Kingdom
The control on his voice was amazing, those scales are beautifuly executed and very clean, a true musician. I love that song and his voice.
Executed to the 10th degree..
He was a true professional.
What I sight to see! He was overtly talented. Naturally. It doesn’t even look like he was trying. Not to mention, he was incredibly handsome my gosh🔥😮💨. I’m young, but I’ve always had an old soul. I know good music when I hear it.
Had it all, the voice, the moves and the looks. No artist today would even attempt singing and moving like that live on national TV. Class with a capital C.
Ahora la musica esta agonizando jamas se va comparar a esos tiempos dorados de esa epoca donde se veia talentos reales y no existia autotune
Sadly, 38 years ago today (January 21, 1984), the world lost the singing legend Mr. Jackie Leroy Wilson AKA "Mr. Excitement". RIP
It's incredible
marvelous!!
That singer is tha best in his time. 👌

Was the best and still is
2:42 he slid back up to his feet! My father showed me this performance back in the late 90s early 2000s and it still has the same magical effect on me today. Effortless entertaining. His eyes flutter as if he’s not even in the world.
Yeah, I hit rewind instantly...like, Hey! What just happened?
I can't help but think of the Nicholas Brothers when I see his dance moves. All 3 men just unbelievable talents.

Are you kidding me? The talent of this cat just blows my mind.
An absolutely incredible completely LIVE performance. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
Awesome singer and performer!
I first say Jackie on Bandstand I believe as a 11 or 12 year old white kid in Dallas Texas. He wowed me like no one else before. I was young and loved doo wop at the time, Dion/Belmonts, etc. But wow, this black guy just knocked my socks off. What I would have given to see him perform live at the Apollo.
Saw him in 1975 on what would be his final tour of the UK. It was a young crowd as he'd had some recent chart success over here with ' I Get the Sweetest Feeling'. He was a force of nature on stage and I'll always remember that night and shaking his hand. Sadly many of the young audience didn't know his earlier hits and didn't really respond to his performance. It wasn't many weeks after when he collapsed on stage back in the USA and we lost one of the greatest of all time. For me, as a 17 year old fan it was a privilege to have seen him perform and shake his hand.
Wigans?
I asked Jackie Wilson if I shake his hand as he walked up the steps to give a performance that some classmates from my high school danced on. I had enjoyed when I watched him on stage in NYC.
I miss Jackie Wilson. The greatest artist of all time. Never forgotten. ❤❤🙏RIP
His range not many can get close to it impeccable
Pound for pound the best male singer in popular music ever.
Completely in a class of his own
Hmmm...definitely not, but certainly one of the best all around male entertainers.
@@direfranchement how many popular male singers do you know that can sing opera on command?
@@travelinman Not sure how that is relevant to popular music. I don't think Jackie Wilson comes to mind for most people when reviewing greatest singers. It isn't anything against him, but he was a singer and a dancer. People rate him higher as an all around showman. His singing was almost secondary. Men like Sam Cooke, Ben E. King, Tony Williams, and David Ruffin would probably rank higher in terms of vocals.
He has two super high notes that are only in Justin Beiber's dreams still.
Rip Jackie,🇵🇷🇺🇸❤
First class talent .
One of the coolest, slickest, good looking singers.
Rest in heaven both Ed Sullivan and Jackie Wilson, two greatful legends forevermore.
What a voice. And live without a net
Grew up just blocks from Jackie in Highland Park, Michigan. He knew my brother real well. Our mothers were in the hospital together one year. Everyone knew Jackie. He was a great talent. God Bless you Jackie.
This brother was so smooth .
The father of MJ, for the movements i say, Jackie Wilson forever, hugs to heaven!

@@CDR807I wish more people were aware of JW and his greatness.
This Man is the Prototype. Period. 👑.
That’s the most exciting performance
How he stand from kneeing
ok I was 12 when this one came out !!! My brother and me used to dance to so many of the oldies in the basement...(I think its only where our Dad let us get a little loud) we also pretended we were singers, and used a lamp as our "spot light" and it doubled as our microphone hahahaha ....My brother could really dance great !
watching this guy in his prime makes you wonder where he got his vocal training......now this is real talent dude was fucking smoooooooth
You can’t train that, you got it or you don’t, and he had it
I believe most black singers up until about the 80s were mainly trained singing in church.
Jackie Wilson received vocal training from Billy Ward after he joined Billy Ward & the Dominoes. If you compare Jackie's earliest recordings to those he made after joining the Dominoes, you'll see the difference. Ward wasn't a great singer himself, but he was classically trained and knew how to get the most out of Jackie's immense talent.
My absolute favorite singer. I fell in love with song as a little girl and it still my favorite song ever. I can’t believe a little girl born in 92 fell in love with this song so much I cried when I realized he was dead. I like the slower version better. Where he dances and dropped down and levetates back up! But I love watching as many clips of him possible.
Damn!!! that man was hot!!!
You go Jackie.
Thank you!!!
One of the greatest songs ever. The arrangement was sensational. Jackie could belt it out.
Jackie Wilson was one of my favorites.
To call him great is an understatement. This man defies complimentary words.
He really was the best and this performance of Lonely Teardrops is the the finest on You Tube!!! No wonder Elvis looked on him as an inspiration and friend. Even paying for his hospital bills when he was in a coma for the last years of his life.
No wonder that jackie said that every black singer of the timw copied elvis. Elvis helped him at his begin in la by attending his show which was like an approval, after jackie hit it really
berry gordy pay his bills too.
Elvis did not "help" Jackie "at his beginning". Elvis saw Jackie in LA in 1966 at a club called "The Trip". By then, Jackie had already had 43 hits on Billboard Charts, including 5 number "1" R&B records. Jackie signed at Brunswick Records in 1957 with his first hit, "Reel Petite". Prior to that, he had hit recordings as the lead singer of "The Dominos".
@@PutOnASweater Elvis did me a nice favour once. I was in Hollywood, California, playing a club called The Trip and we were having a little difficulty getting people to come out at that particular time. So he came out twice for me and, well, you couldn't get in. They said if Elvis goes, well ... hey, let's go'
Btw elvis saw him first in 1956

Mr. Excitement!
Mr Sexy ..charisma
Excellent performer, he was uncomparable.
One of the best performances of Jackies Life!
ALL his perforates were "one of the best ofJackie's life"
Well! I thought James Brown had a pretty good stage act, but this man is classy, and in a class of his own.
I've seen the both of them live, and Jackie had James beat by a mile.
@@PutOnASweater I am a New Zealander of European descent born in the early Fifties. I don't recall learning of either of these artists at the time because they were just not on the radar for radio stations here then. My journey has been thru The Beatles & The Rolling Stones to finding Blues and 60's Black Pop, but it took me far longer to appreciate older R&B, Funk & Soul. I thus ask forgiveness for being innocent of Jackie's talent up until now.
@@PutOnASweater please explain why? I’ve always believed this but there is so much more live footage of James Brown than Jackie Wilson. Coming from someone who has seen them both live, I’d love to hear why / how Jackie beat him by a mile. Huge JW fan by the way. But JB is always hailed as the best dancer from that era.
