    This Bible may be next on my list. I recently got myself the Turquoise in Red Letter and I really love that Bible! The one thing and most important thing to me is the font size. Nowadays I usually shy away from anything under a LG Print . But the Cambridge Bibles usually have bolder type fonts . Been looking for a good top quality take to church Bible and this Concord looks perfect. So my question is what’s your take on the font size on the Concord? The Thompson Chain Lg Print is a 9 pt and it’s about right I think. How do these two compare? Thanks for the review.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  6 років тому +2

      The font in this Concord is roughly equivalent to 9.5 pts in Times New Roman. At about the 18:20 point, I show the Concord font and Times New Roman side-by-side. I don't have a large print Thompson, so I can't comment on that. But if you want to see how the Concord compares to the Turquoise, scroll forward to 35:39.

    My Personal Concord published by TBS, and my new goatskin Cambridge Concord exhibits the same print irregularity you showed in 2 Kings. I think this is related to the facsimile process and is not a printing issue, rather it's a source issue.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  5 років тому +2

      That sounds plausible, and unfortunate.

    • @RoastBeefSandwich

      @@RGrantJones it is unfortunate, it's a wonderful bible. Unless I find a worse page than your example of 2 kings in mine, I'm going to keep it. I like the rest of it too much to do a return. I recently bought an Oxford old Scofield with a page that might as well have been left intentionally blank it was so light - it got sent back.

    Your concord has the same two bands in the gilding as my goatskin cameo. You can see them clearly at 1:57.

    My goatskin had glue also, that synthetic liner is very good. I like them I just was gentle and picked it off and rubbed tell it was gone.
    I was disappointed with the Concord ink fading esp in John chapter 3 I'm curious because all the red letters have the same fading there.I think its because of the facsimile they chose for this edition and the red ink fades there because the actual plates were worn there.
    Is your black text broken up through Ch3 in the Gospel of John?
    Thanks for sharing this one.....I'm breaking the rule I haven't finished watching yet cause this is a long one brother LOL.😉
    Gotta grab the popcorn with this one.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  6 років тому +1

      Any longer and I'll have to start inserting an intermission, like in "The Ten Commandments" or "Lawrence of Arabia." No, in John 3 it's deep and bold. I think you're right about the fading. It's not the fault of the modern reproduction/printing technology: It's likely because they've chosen a weakly printed original to reproduce.

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles 6 років тому +2

      R. Grant Jones Agreed, Cambridge makes some of the best prints. This reminds me of the wide margin Clerandon, I know they have better prints of that text because my 7c is really nice. I've become a fan of the little Clerandon my self and the new Cambridge Turquoise, its disappointing they didn't release a black text edition😒 What is so difficult by just printing black text, I'm sure its not a money issue? I actually feel bad now when this happens because I know brothers and sisters like yourself are losing out.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  6 років тому +1

      I think there has to be an additional cost from making two different print runs. A publisher also has to print boxes that say "black letter" instead of "red letter" -- and sort the Bibles so they don't go into the wrong boxes. Sellers like evangelicalbible.com have to make up two web pages instead of one. But it is difficult to see how the cost of a black letter edition would be much more than the cost of carrying both goatskin and calf split. Is it possible that black letter Bibles get returned more often -- by people who thought they were buying a red letter edition? That would drive costs up. It's also possible that black letter sales are slower, which leaves stock on the shelves and stock rooms. The publishers could reason, "If we'd printed those in red letters, they'd have sold by now. And the merchants would have room to stock our newer Bibles." So it could be a turnover issue.
      Too bad Bible Buying Guide didn't get a chance to ask that question of Cambridge in one of his interviews of industry reps: "So, just what does Cambridge have against black letter Bibles anyway? Will you ever print another black letter Cameo, Concord, or Turquoise?"

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles 6 років тому +2

      R. Grant Jones LOL.maybe Randy should ask us about what we would like to hear😁
      That just opened my eyes brother, I didn't consider all the extra cost involved with making another text.

  • @AdamVine

    As usual, another amazing review! No one reviews like R. Grant Jones 👍 Quick question for you sir....I understand that the layout between the Concord and the Cameo are obviously different, however, my question is...are the actual cross references and footnotes different too? I’m looking to do Bible study with my family. I want us to all be reading from the same text and able to review the same cross references and footnotes....this is the reason why.
    Some family members like the Concord, some the Cameo... of course, lol. Thank you again...

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for those kind words, Adam. I have both the Cameo and Concord in front of me -- and if I had to vote, I think I'd chose the Cameo, even though I have old eyes. I prefer the in-verse superscripts for references, and the typeface, even though the font is too small and the lines are spaced too closely. But they're both excellent. As to your question, the translation notes seem to be the same. For instance, at John 1.12, both provide "Or, the right, or, privilege" as alternates to the word "power" in the text. As best I can tell, the references are also the same. Looking at John 1.4, the Concord cites ch. 11.25, 1 Jn 5.11, and Ch. 8.12. The Cameo cites ch. 11.25 and 1 Jn 5.11 at superscript j, and ch. 8.12 at superscript k. I spot-checked Acts 6.1 also, and the references are the same there also -- but easier to sort out in the Cameo, in my opinion, because in the Concord they break across lines. For instance, a reference to 5.14 in the Concord can have the "5." on one line and the "14" on the next.

    • @AdamVine
      @AdamVine 6 років тому +2

      Gotcha! I agree with you actually. I find the Cameo more of a 'traditional' expression...more my style. One more question if you don't mind...the Turquoise? This is another option I'm looking at after I watched your video. Are they the same f/n and c/r with the Turquoise as the Cameo by chance? Thank you again sir.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  6 років тому +3

      Yes, as far as I can tell. The Turquoise is like a large-font edition of the Cameo, but with better line spacing. The Cameo, on the other hand, is more portable.

    Bro what's best, goatskin or calfskin? Please respond. Thank you.

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  6 років тому +2

      First, let me say I'm not an animal hide kind of person. I'm more focused on print, paper and layout. That said, goatskin is tougher, so if you're rough on your Bibles, it's what I recommend. For myself, however, if I have a choice between a calfskin and a goatskin binding for a Bible, and both bindings are edge-lined, I'll generally pick the calfskin. I'm very gentle and careful with my Bibles, so I don't need the toughness of goatskin, and I prefer the feel of calfskin. But it's easier to find an edge-lined Bible in goatskin these days. There aren't as many edge-lined calfskins out there.

    I really like my cambridge. But the inking is inconsistent. There is some pages where it loses the boldness. And even quite a few spots where the letters are quite messed up. For the price, they should be able to do better I would think.
    Whats outside, is not as important as whats inside. The Scripture is the star of the show, not the binding. But sadly, they have kind of become complacent on that. Mine even has words that run on. And for a book that costs 250 dollars roundabout. I find that pretty unacceptable.

      David Clark, I picked up a new Nelson large print center-column ref KJV, in “comfort print”, bonded leather, for $16. The paper, print uniformity, font, and readability all blow away any of my Cambridge bibles. Sad but true.

      I own this Bible and it imparts a little history and character of it’s own in terms of the facsimile of the letterpress original. Whether you interpret it’s imperfections as interesting, or charming, or annoying comes down to individual opinion. As for myself, I recoil from perfect, modern, digital fonts (particularly for the KJV). So-called ‘Comfort Print’ and Schuyler’s ‘Milo’ fonts leave me cold. They belong in a corporate annual report to shareholders not the Word Of God. I partly agree about hardbacks (and there ought to be more choices) but I am prepared to pay for the hand skills of bookbinders to be kept valid in this world. (Edge lining especially is a difficult and mostly manual skill.)
