TPE Class 185 'Desiro' Review - The North's Diesel Express Trains

- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.
In this video I will be travelling on-board a TransPennine Express Class 185 from Hull to Leeds.
These trains used to to form the backbone of the North's longer distance railway lines, now they've been supplemented with a new fleet of longer trains, but still continue providing service on some routes. I wanted to find out what the experience on one of these regional diesel units is like!
Enjoy the video. :)

The reason why the departure was so slow is because platform 5 and 6 are sinking, Network set this limit until colas come around with theyre 56s to fix it
Thanks for that, I just knew somebody would have the answer! 👍
@@SuperalbsTravels np!
What does it mean? sinking?
@@PanosSkarp into the ground
@@PanosSkarp The tracks are going down into the ground.
Brilliant video! I think TPE’s product may be one of the best in the north.
It's pretty solid, right? Thanks for watching. :)
I went on one of these recently between Leeds and Manchester - my only complaint there was that it was super busy but other than that it was smooth sailing. Loved the seats and interior design
Ah, still busy then? 😬
@@SuperalbsTravels 3 carriage train (1 of which is mostly first class) has always been ridiculous on that route. But even the new 5 carriage trains aren't enough... Last week I traveled from Liverpool to Leeds on the 5 carriage Transpennine unit and there was people having to stand because they couldn't find a seat! And that's with passenger numbers still lower than normal due to Covid!!
@@ianap That's surprising! Perhaps they should have ordered them longer...again. 😳
@@SuperalbsTravels yeah but it’s a shame because they’re really nice and I would love to travel on them more
Good job the class 185 transpennine expresses are usually connected to another class 185 making 6 coaches, much more coaches now, similar thing happened with the class 220 and 221 as well
Travel tip for others; I went on one recently from Scarborough to Leeds, and if you’re ever travelling late evening, it is much cheaper. E.g. the 20:34 train would’ve cost me about £20 one way, yet the 21:34 cost me less than half that amount!!
Good tip, you can get some bargains if you're flexible with your times!
3:58 To answer your question, on top of what UK Transport has said, there is s a 5mph temperoary speed board, so your train basically had to go slow.
Thanks for that, should have paid more attention shouldn't I, haha?
@@SuperalbsTravelsIf it helps, I watched the video 1st time and I missed it, it was only the 2nd time that I realised it was there.
Burneside has a 5mph sign
Superalbs, just wondering could you do a Northern “Sprinter” Review on the Settle - Carlisle Line,It would make a Great Video and Scenery!
Perhaps in the future, I always like scenic routes.
TPE have probably some the best trains in the UK.
I agree they have currently got, and historically had, a pretty good allocation, with the odd outlier here and there! 😁
Definitely the services to Scarborough are my favourite (nova 3)
I was forced to take a TPE 185 from York to Manchester to then return to London due to the wires being down on the ECML. From what I remember it was a good ride
You were forced!? 😲
@@SuperalbsTravels yes to get back to London Euston the TPE service was the only option for me to get to a Manchester due to ticket acceptance too.
There appeared to be a 5mph speed restriction in the platform looking at the yellow sign
I should have paid more attention then, haha.
I remember doing Manchester Piccadilly to Glasgow on a 185 and it was horrendously overcrowded, hopefully that's fixed now though with the 397s (the single best looking train on the entire UK network and no one will ever change my mind) which I've yet to take a ride on
The 397s are incredibly smart looking things!
A Hull of a video! Leeds 1 to a desire to travel...
Oh the puns! 😅
Excellent trains and now that they mostly run in multiple and the overcrowding isn't such an issue they're a pleasure to travel on. I'd love to see them on the Liverpool - Nottingham route too if that every does get split with a TPE takeover. That route would be a great one for the extra capacity 6 carriages would provide and a first class option on that route wouldn't go amiss either
If TPE takes over, my thought is that they could run the services past Nottingham via Grantham to Skegness, since most TPE North Route and South Rouge services do end at cities by the coast. EMR services from Norwich could then terminate at Nottingham.
I have been Patientley Waiting for this superalbs,Greetings From Lanzarote!
Thank you! :)
You on a holiday out there then, or do you live there?
Nah I’m on a holiday, live in Halifax and am obsessed about trains :-)
@@huddersfieldtrains Awesome! 😁
It is some time since I travelled on a 185 but I always liked them, as DMUs they haven't been bettered, Siemans seem to have the edge where quality is concerned.
I seldom have issues with Siemens stock, they're generally solidly made trains.
These units are great following their refurbishment and with the majority of them being run as two units coupled together, it makes them a more of a viable option to travel on at peak times.
Also, a video in 1st class would be great please, those seats look so comfortable
Okay, I will think about it next time I am in the area!
I love Class 185. It's my favourite train. But the refurbishment part is the only place I dig on. I like the new livery, yes, very much. But, I will still miss the 'Dynamic Lines' livery with the colourful stripes rang along the exterior of the train --- that was a beauty in a nutshell!
At (3:58) there is a 5 MPH TSR board that's probably the reason for the slow departure.
I should have been paying more attention, thanks! 🙄😅
Haven’t you already Done a Standard Class review for Tpe desiro to Scarborough?
Yeah, but the video was veeeeery old.
True lol, that one was much better quality
The 185s really are a great regional train.......just what the 195s should have been.
I got a TPE ad before this 😅😅
I think the 185s are decent. I wouldn't say they're outstanding as I found one part of the seat to be a little hard but it was a very relaxing journey. The best train I've probs been on is maybe an IC225. Never ridden a HST before 😭
What a coincidence! 😂😂
Great video mate. I like the 185s and 397s actually they're both my favourite
Fair enough, you must love TPE then!
Yes, nice enough trains, but not enough seats! The layout is rather commuter like with big doors and standing areas, compared to the old 158s which were crammed with seats! And having 1st class makes things worse. Don't forget you might want to use these for quite long journeys - up to 3 hours, say from the NE to Manchester and you want a seat!! I read somewhere that the operators wanted 4 carriage sets, but the Treasury decreed that 3 were enough for Northerners....
I have also heard that about set lengths.
I love these trains, I’ve been on them like 4 times in my lifetime, I wish Bachman made a model kit of them, I would totally buy one!
a new train company have started today operating london to edinburgh journeys at low cost of around £25 and 4 hour journeys, would love to see you do a video on those
Thanks for the info! :)
Great video! The class 185 is my favourite train along with the other trains of the Desiro family!
Thanks! They're pretty nice little machines, huh? :)
I also like the look of the Desiro Verve, but sadly none were ordered...
A large station, so many trains, nothing electrified … the UK is so far behind …
It's embarassing isn't it.
When I hear Desiro a different train picture is in my mind :) At least on this one, the seats looks much more comfortable.
What I don't like, it seems that the space is narrow on 2nd class. 2:29
It does look rather narrow, but I had no problems. And I think I'd prefer this to one of yours! 😅
@@SuperalbsTravels I guess that I'd prefer the same :). I really need to make some plans to finally ride some brittish trains. It would be a first for me.
4:59 my favourite part
A fan of these seats, then?
Actually just like when you review the seat
Showing their age now, I used them a lot and the amount of times it's been cancelled due to electrical problems with doors not opening etc isn't funny
I've enjoyed travelling on the 185's from Malton to York. I agree with your assessment.
Thanks!
Ayyyy the class 185 I like that train very much because of the smart interior and motor sound
😀😀
I like the Nova trains, but we all know these ones have good seats
They are actually surprisingly good seats, never complaining about them.
Overall I think the 185 is my favorite train they are very comfy and provide good leg room and accessories 😀
They're pretty decent, aren't they!
Theres a TSR leaving Hull, due to the platform issues.
The 185s have never operated all TPE services, they had the 350s on the Anglo Scots prior to the new fleet and the 170s on the South route (and the Hull route too about 10 years ago) :)
True!
Think they got rid of the 170s on the south route a while ago now
Yeah, the 170s are long gone...
@@SuperalbsTravels Only trains we have from tpexpress where I live are the 185s (other TOC is East Midlands Trains)
A tip on why this train is so slow in 89% of operation is because the axle applies too much weight, and the train can not move as fast. Basically, the axles are too heavy to reach the speed limit
10:05 Video's final score: 9.8
Wow, thank you, such a good score this time! ☺
The rattling sound you mentioned is an air compressor. It turns on and off randomly. Overall though these are fantastic trains with amazing sounding engines. Plus as you mentioned the seats are very comfy. Although the old 2006 interior was far superior in my opinion with the dynamic lines livery.
Very smart looking train indeed. I'm amazed at how much the price can change depending on when you travel and when you book. For an overseas visitor who wants flexibility I suspect a Rail Pass would be the way to go?
It depends on what your plans are, if looking for flexibility then a country-wide or even Europe-wide pass is probably the best way to go.
The only place you can't go to from Leeds is Wales.
Can if you change at Bristol Parkway.
@@stevesmith9602 That's not direct through...
You could ask CrossCountry to introduce a new service to Wales from Leeds, Hull and York.
@@Andrewjg_89 Idk whether they'll do it, but they could do with operating a West Wales - Manchester service that could have more capacity and be faster than the current TfW services
nice video
Thanks! :)
The reason for the impressive station in Hull is George ‘The Railway King’ Hudson.
Well, that actually makes a lot of sense! 👍
@@SuperalbsTravels
It was known as ’Hudson’s Folly’ because it was thought that the scale of the station & hotel was too large for Hull . Eventually, Hudson’s fraudulent dealings were uncovered.
I’d imagine the train would’ve been held by a signal
hey albie, great video! i'd recommend trying the new 'lumo' operator, i'm really interested to see what their service and trains are like..
DONE! 😁
I was on them a few months ago, they were the best DMUs I have ever been on 😃
Pretty good!
Nice trip! Also since Lumo has entered service with the new class 803s, you should try them out! They look pretty good.
Will see what I can do! 😉
@@SuperalbsTravels I’ve heard the seats are an improvement to the 800s, 801s and 802s. And the shape is different.
@@TEBEnthusiast the seats on 800s and 802s are very uncomfortable.
@@maimadha I know! The 800 and 802s are rubbish! I’m local to them.
LNER Also Operate To Hull With One Of Their Azuma Trains
Yeah, but I didn't see one.
If the train revs too fast wheelslip will occur
I’ve been on the TransPennine Express Class 185 Desiro that Siemens have built and manufactured them. Maybe Siemens could of continued on manufacturing the Desiro DMUs for South Western Railway, Great Western Railway, Northern, ScotRail, Transport for Wales and East Midlands Railway. Plus the Northern Class 170 Turbostars and Hull Trains Class 802 Paragon IETs are amazing trains.
Wow, think that's a bit much, they're definitely not needed on the South Western. But I think it would be good if a few more were ordered...
@@SuperalbsTravels Totally agree
I think the 185s are the best trains about, however I have experienced a couple of them having engine rev slippages? 🤣 That was 185 119 & 185 127 but coupled with other units
Do A Review On The New 803 Lumo Trains. They Are Built By Hitachi And They Dont Have The Fansia Sofa Design Seats!!
Will see what I can do! 😉
@@SuperalbsTravels Ok! 😃
6:21 I've noticed this rattling noise on the similar class 450s, but only above around 60mph
I don't think Hull Trains have enough services tho. From Hull to London is about every 3 hours with considering the size of the place, I don't think that is good enough. Also why did that map not mention Redcar Central or St Helens Central? And why do more services stop at Dewsbury than Batley? Despite Batley being signifcantly bigger...
It's quite an old map, also doesn't mention the Saltburn extensions.
We need a lumo review Albs!
Will see what I can do! 😉
@@SuperalbsTravels lumo review will be great
@@maimadha It's already available on my channel! :)
Yay hull my local!
Awesome! I guess you use this route a lot then?
@@SuperalbsTravels yup!
Do it in 1st Class as well
Ooh, maybe I will! 😃
Can You Do First Class On These Trains?
I will consider it. :)
@@SuperalbsTravels Ok
Just to be "that person" - Hull's in the East Riding of Yorkshire, so not the North East :)
Well it depends on what you mean by the north east generally it's used to mean Northumberland,Co Durham and the very top of the North Riding of Yorkshire.I'd say all of Yorkshire is the north of England and therefore the east.I'd use the pre 1974 boundaries of Yorkshire and Lancashire to say where the north begins, north of the boundary is the north and south the midlands.Sorry Cheshire!
Controversial choice of words, clearly! 🙄
@@kevanhubbard9673 Fab reply, Kevan! On the east coast the generally accepted thing is that the Midlands end at the south shore of Humber and Yorkshire (so "the North" more generally) begins on the north shore. So lots of considerations either way. That said, the regional list of England suggests that the North East includes: Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and bits of North Yorkshire (including Middlesbrough and bits of Stokesley Parish). So I'd say anything in the East Riding is "Northern England" but not the North East - also, there's a definite shift in accents at Darlington (97 miles north by road from Hull through County Durham, North Yorkshire and the East Riding) from Geordie/Maccam variants to Yorkshire and even the East Yorkshire accent is different to North Yorkshire
@@SuperalbsTravels not in the least! Just geographical acceptance of them
The Northumbrian accent begins around Whitby as my grandfather was from there and southerners thought that he was a Geordie!Whitby is about 50/50 between Northumbrian and Yorkshire accent wise, Middlesbrough is predominantly Northumbrian, what's known as a South Durham accent and it's exactly the same accent as people north of the Tees speak with places like Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington, etc. At the Durham coal field the accent become even closer to Geordie and in Newcastle 100 percent Geordie! Regarding the rural Northumberland accent I'd say Geordieish but at Berwick you get the Whitby 50/50 position except it's 50/50 between Northumbrian and Scottish!
I did this train from Manchester to Glasgow and I had to stand for alot of the way as the train I should of got had broke down.
This also frequently happend to me.
Oh god, that sounds awful!
Diesel chuggers
True, but they do have eco-mode? :)
There’s a 5mph speed limit into and out of the platform, which is captured on you video.
Good spot, guess I missed that, hahaha.
The Mostly Used Trains On Transpennine Express
Yep!
Best DMU in Britain? Would struggle to think of anything that tops them, wonderful units
Ooh, maybe! How about a lovely 159? 😃
@@SuperalbsTravels Agreed. As diesel trains go, the 159s on SW Railways are a good quality match for the 185s.
I agree, have spent many weeks on the 159s, and really cannot complain at all.
“Troubled trains”🙄😂
Goodness they are flawed! 😅
