Bravo! The 43s should be inducted into the hall of fame.
I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..

Their absolutely amazing
Yes, it is a fantastic train, possibly the best in the world. Not the fastest diesel in the world but a great train.
All 125 group vehicles are mainline registered, there will be mainline tours in the near future.
The speed of 25 MPH has been imposed on all heritage railways and is the law whether or not you are traveling on an HST.
Unless your playing train sim world I got up to 110MPH on west Somerset railway.
Or around 125mph on the east coast mainline, London to Edinburgh.
The zenith of passenger comfort. Nothing since has come close.
Great video. There’s definitely a lot of nostalgia for the HSTs, and I am certainly a fan of them. I miss them on the MML.
Defo but I got the cross country 125!
At derby
I've never done a long journey on an HST. Just a quick one between Reading and Paddington where I was pretty much standing; or spent the journey talking to the bloke running the buffet car; scoring a free croque monsieur that would've gone in the bin.
Love the old HST ..what an icon. We all grew up.with them. Sad to see them.gone from long distance mainline passenger services . Great video .
Most professional video I've seen on these HST weekends.
They're still going strong in Australia, between Sydney and Brisbane/Melbourne/Dubbo

The 125 was probably the best Inter City train ever built. Done quite a few trips from Paddington to Penzance, and also Kings Cross to Edinburgh and beyond. Very comfortable seating, and the ride was always smooth. Probably the next best train, was the 225 class. But give me the 125 any day. Even on a busy train, you never felt uncomfortable, as there was always plenty of room in the carriages.
Thanks for this. I did Paddington to Penzance in 1996 when Great Western Trains took over as the first TOC on the GWR, first class was sumptuous then compared to the horrific Class 802 video you just posted. My longest HST ride was Aberdeen-King's Cross, 8hrs onboard a HST with at seat dining restaurant car and a la carte menu. Back in those GNER days members of the Excel loyalty programme would receive a free half bottle of wine with any meal. The dining was Pullman quality even though the Pullman brand was no longer used. Great video thanks
I do rather miss my daily HST commute in/out of London on MML in the never cramped 1st class .....
I loved seeing these screaming out of Manchester piccadilly in the late 1980s them screaming ear piercing valenta engines rattling my brains 🧠 lol I love these flying machines/flying bananas 🍌 whatever you wanna call them 🥰😍🤩
I’m surprised that power operated doors and toilet tanks weren’t fitted at half life overhaul. It was done to the Chiltern loco hauled Mk 3 sets which apart from couplings and electrical supply are pretty similar, so it should have been possible.
Features on this service not available on the Castle sets using these power cars: Shop/buffet, comfortable seats. At least the refurbished units didn't mess with the coach suspension...
I would love to see if 125 group could get different HST sets from different TOCs. It would be awesome if they could do a FGW dynamic lines set, or a VTEC set. Another cool thing they could do is form a train with mk3s from different operators, so each carriage is a different TOC/era in time. Starting with the original BR interior of course, and each coach having a little description of the interior design. Also, what ever happened to the LNER HST in the farewell livery? They should get their hands on that!
The problem with that is storage. Also, good luck finding original Mk3 light fittings and moquette. The LNER farewell set is still in storage and is apparently in very poor condition.
Amazing
Great video mate. Looks like you had fun.
Great video, really enjoyed it throughout.
nice to see the original slam doors!
I love HSTs
WHen I was young that so called " First Class" WAS second class and First Class was private for maybe 6 people with own sliding door as I recall
Nice of Class 117 (extra tailor make it becomes 4 car). It was used on another vintage railway called Ongar-Epping Railway (Essex) with Class 117 3-car in 15 years ago. Well done to Derby for saved HSTs! And also one of Pacers said "Made in Derby" - very good!
Nice work and thanks for this video. I am pleased that the best passenger train in the world is preserved. I grew up with these HST's from childhood until 2017 when I left England. Those Valenta's in the 1980's and 1990's used to sound like a bit like the older Boeing 707's on takeoff! But man I love these trains to this day. Although I have not been on a Class 800 series. From what I have seen on UA-cam is that the seating on those are hard and the seats look like Ironing boards to say it nicely. Anyway. I am appreciative that I was around to enjoy growing up with these iconic beasts and I hope to see one set in Intercity Executive livery in the future and I might come to England again to ride these on the Midland Railway. As for transport. I will just take an Uber from Alfreton station to the Midland Railway. Fun times ahead. I have subbed by the way and please do more videos.
This the HST that is now booked to run Manchester to London on Fridays
Also the instructions next to the door of HST. It said wait until unlocked door light on, pull window down and turn handle (outside) to open door. That reminded of Southern Railway's slam doors trains has similar (turn handle outside to open door) in 1990s except central locking system, unlike Essex's slam doors (Class 302, 310 and 312) can push tab behind the door to open.
Fantastic video and felt wonderfully nostalgic.
Thank you for sharing.
Super video! Nice train presentation and lovely places! Good work! Thumbs Up & Subscribe

Great video went on board 1 723 this year the best day ever fantastic went 1 class the best😊
We went to Butterly last year on 22nd October just before Halloween. We went on the class 141 spooky train and our last stop was Alfreton where we saw the 125 stationed there. It may have been most shortest train trip back fourth that we’ve been on regarding travelling on other heritage train routes we did enjoy it on the spooky train.
Sad part is we missed going on it just by few days but I heard it ran into problems so they stopped services. From what I’m hearing Butterly might be putting it back in service once fixed but not sure when. Still nice day trip out exploring what Butterly & parts around it had to offer.
Just a quick comment. Whilst not fully meeting todays regulations there is a wheelchair accessible toilet in Coach D.
Yep - but not on the formation used on the running day 👍
@@OMtheRails It was in the formation on the running days. I had to deploy the wheelchair ramp several times each day for our passengers to use the wheelchair space.
I was visiting on one of the running days. Coach D wasn't in the formation, not to mention Coach D isn't a disabled carriage, its Coach E (standard) and Coach G on the ex-emr stock.. The formations on running days was Coach B,H,F,G,F. B being standard, F being buffet cars, G being the disabled carriage, and H being 1st.
Unless you are referring to Coach D as the 4th carriage then you are technically correct.
When you said it went to Hammersmith, I thought you meant it went all the way to London 14:06
Great video the 125 train is the best of british train fantastic
Thanks for sharing, shared.
When they reinstall a Paxman Valenta, engine into a production, HST power car that will get me, excited.
I must give that a try. Butterly is my local preserved railway
It’s not the world’s fastest diesel train. It is however, the best train in the world IMO
U say affordable 🤔 yet u can get a gwr hst return from par to penzance witch is a 80 mile round trip with well maintained mark 3s for the same price
Yes, but not on classic HSTs as those have sliding doors - compare that to other offerings such as the Midland Pullman which are £300+!
Also, that £15 goes back to the heritage railway, looking after the rolling stock, station, tracks etc as well as the hst.
A bargain for £15 buff as what's £15 quid these days I would ride on there on a regular basis if they was running to a scheduled regular timetable 😎
Thats true I do miss the clunk and the bang but I still get a lot of enjoyment from the last hst's
Hopefully the 125 group will fit the brakes from the 80's, it has a unique smell though i can't remember what they was called
Asbestos lol
I went on it 2 days ago it has the new livery, the midland mainline livery and 43048 has some colour fade
Kinda curious in why didn’t why put the buffet/first class car to be on the middle of the train.
And will they ever change the livery on the MK3 coaches and HST? To something like BR intercity blue or intercity swallow?
I think the formation was changed to reflect the normal DMU service that runs on the line, with the provision of additional services by the 125group - not sure whether a repaint is on the cards, but can imagine it will be, especially as 43044 is now in IC Exec livery.
Great review! I wonder if they will relivery the rolling stock and refurbish the carriages? (Most likely not)
43056 is at Gwili railway near Carmarthen, west Wales.
We have 43060 in Peterborough at the moment
What is the app that you idee to track the speed of the Train ?
Speedmeter - available on the appstore, but not sure about Google Play 👍
south westwern railways have the same toilet signs! from south west trains!
'Enjoying retirement' some of who are sharing their retirement with the pacers
The DMU looks like a class 115 rather than a 117
Also Scotrail have them
3:08 43102 has the world record
Listen for like 5 more seconds. He literally says that
@@Luuthe674 ok
I think the standard class is more comfortable
Class 117 units never ran on the Midland main line but the Great Western. You're confusing them with the Class 127......
Are there any class 43s on the west Somerset railway?
It’s not that bad to take the bus form Darby station
3:99 you said Hammersmith but where is the"the Hammersmith"
Scotrail have got hst's
Slam doorss
Hello There Again it is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of you Class 313, Class 314 and that also is including those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 313's Class 314's including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 680 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Cummins M11 Engine, Gardner 6LXC Engine, Gardner 6LXB, Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314's and the Class 315's Diesel Train Fans out there Please Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Pretty Please?
I honestly wonder why these decades-old diesel nightmares aren't where they belong yet: ON THE SCRAPYARD. I guess the necessary rolling stock to replace them simply isn't there. But that's not a very good excuse. This locomotive/train type was a PR-lie from the very beginning. "The fastest diesel train in the world". COME ON!!!! No other advanced railway nation was building diesel high speed trains anymore at the time. It was all electric. It's easy to be the "fastest" when there's no competition in that category (simply because nobody even wanted to!!). This train which is so beloved by railway enthusiats (Yes, I know!!) is actually a symbol of failure and a reflection of Britain's economic crisis in the 1970s (no money for electrification). Fun fact (although not really funny): Back in the 1980s the electrification of the ENTIRE EAST COAST MAINLINE was done for about 380 million pounds. How many more electrification schemes could have been done without the HST or the failed ATP?? Mistakes that had a decades-long desasterous impact were made back then.
In 1955 France was running electric trains at 255mph. All my life i heard about mallard being the fastest steam train, repeat that with diesel hst. Those trains left the station long ago. Maglev leads nowadays
Shut up bruv 😂😂😂 always some kill joy in the comments
The worsest service in UK. Actually in a whole UK! OMG a what? A record holder???????😁😆😆😆😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂is this a joke???!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Yes, a record holder, the fastest diesel train in the world. A record it holds to this day, and when in service these were far from the worst trains.
Is this comment a joke???!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
@@cjmillsnun It isn't actually the fastest diesel train in the world. It is the best train in the world though IMO
Amazing 👍
