    I tell you what, sir. I've been to your website, and if you could find a way to get these parts lazer cut and/or stamped out, whoa the $$$ you could make. I'd buy one in a heartbeat!

    Hi Gary,
    I have a question regarding the double-gaff plan: it says that it uses the same foremast as the original but also (later) that it omits spreaders. Should I omit spreaders on both masts, or just the mainmast?

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775  3 роки тому +1

      "Same foremast" refers to diameter, length & taper. Sorry about the confusion. Omit the spreaders on both masts for the all gaff version. This makes for a simpler rig, with 2 shrouds per side of each mast. Those 2 shrouds can be made up from 1 piece of twine which wraps around the mast sitting atop wooden "cheeks" glued to the mast. For a look at more rigging details of this schooner, see:

    Well, it looks like 1/8" luan door skins are no longer available at the local box stores. The closest I can find locally is 5mm (about 3/16") "three-ply" flooring underlayment, which is made to be flat and not bend. Looks like I'm going to have to make my own 1/8" skins for the boats. I will try re-sawing on my bandsaw to get close and I thiiiiink my 12" thickness planer can get close to 1/8". I hope it works! I've been looking forward to starting on Irene this winter.

      Hi Tony, don't give up too quickly on the search for 1/8" door skin. Finding it will depend somewhat on your location, that is , what part of the world you are in.
      You might find it under another name, Home Depot in California calls it "utility ply". Check also with a local door making company. It does exist and is used not only for doors, but also by cabinet makers. Full size boat builders use it for making patterns.
      Another source for 1/8" plywood, perhaps birch, is specialty (such as aircraft) wood suppliers or hobby supplier.
      Lastly, you might pose the question to other builders on this RC model forum:
      www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2550991-Bearospace-schooner-Irene/page162
      Hope this info helps,
      Cheers !

      @@sailtails2775 Thanks for your quick reply! I looked all over my local orange box store today and couldn't find it, but this evening, immediately after reading your response, I went online and searched for "1/8" utility plywood" and found it. I bought it online and was rewarded with a text indicating my order is ready for pickup....at the same store I was in this afternoon. On Monday we'll see if they really do have it. Fingers crossed! Thanks again.

    Dear Gary, I fall on the second category, those pursuing "other projects"! I loved what I got for the 15 bucks! I've already scaled your masts/ rudder placement to fit the 90 cm (about 35 inches) fiberglass hull I ordered. I love the looks of gaff rigs, so I thank you especially for the notes on alternate rigging methods. You are a proactive mind, and provided me with a wealth of information. Now let's see how well I put them into my novice practice! I will keep you posted on the developments of the Irene-bis.

    can irene be built with a gaff rigged mainsail

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775  6 років тому +1

      Yes indeed, the plans include a "Gaff option" sail plan with the gaff mainsail balanced by a longer bowsprit, giving her a total 1015 sq. in. of sail area, (165 sq. in. more than the original plan with the marconi main sail)

    what paint was used at the build around 3:42?

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775  6 років тому +1

      The bare wood was given 2 coats of penetrating epoxy, followed by multiple coats of oil based primer (sanded between coats to achieve a smooth surface), and finally 3 coats of oil based enamel (gloss colors as desired)

    • @chipScoD
      @chipScoD 6 років тому

      Very interesting! What primer are you using? I'm building my own sailboat at the moment hence the strangely specific questions :)

    • @sailtails2775
      @sailtails2775  6 років тому +1

      the primer I used is made by Zinsser, called Cover Stain Primer - Stain Blocker - Bond Coat, oil based, interior/exterior
