That last variant sounds almost exactly like a riff in one of my favorite solo conga tumbao intros except the palm is first and then the flam - Cal Tjader’s “Cuban Fantasy”.

Good afternoon teacher! Maestro, could you make a video lesson of the Majao rhythm and its variations?
Unfortunately I don't know the Majao rhythm. So I need examples of how it is played, so I can analyze it.
Hi Michael - Your music notation is a bit confusing here because, as you state, the Guanguanco pattern conga melody normally starts at the end of measure 1 (on 4 ) and continues into the second measure ( when a 3-2 clave is being used) but here your music notation shows the melody starting on the 4 of the second measure and continuing into the first measure - leading into the variation that occurs in the second measure.
Yes, that's how I see it as well, when he first counted off on this clip I went "uh oh", now I see the notation in the image there and that could have the same problem as you mentioned. It certainly would have been more clear if he noted the clave in relation to the notation, he does that pretty quickly on inside the video so anyone not just taking the first moments as the end all and be all should figure it out if not immediately, eventually. That could be misleading to some people who are not familiar with modern Cuban Rumba. (Of course some pretty old Rumbas are done the notated way. I wonder who started doing it the way we do it now and why, if you know I certainly would love to know!)
