I’m a cop and I haven’t ever worked with a K-9 unit but I’ve always thought it’s sketchy. A dog feels like a lethal force option because it can cause “serious bodily injury” yet for some reason a K-9 can be deployed in a situation where lethal force would not be justified. I have known a guy who was K-9 officer at one point and had been pretty seriously bitten by his own dog. I can understand dogs for bomb or drug sniffing, but a dog specifically trained to bite people outside of a lethal force scenario just doesn’t feel right to me. Maybe some people would say it’s because I’m too soft, but I still don’t like it. It feels like an old tradition that needs to die.

Dogs are beautiful creatures... but when trained in a certain manner they can become vicious. The whole point of a K-9 originally was that their sense of smell could track down suspects and then let the cops do the arresting. They should not be used as a method of violence. A few cops in this video did nothing, in fact they were gleeful when the suspects were bitten and being eating alive.

Any cop that might handle their dog that way is using it as an excuse to take out their anger, and in turn the dog will turn more aggressive and only learn to bite harder the next time. If that didn't turn out to be the case: congrats. That office now has a mistrustful or possible fearful dog on his hands that cops won't be able to train out of it, no longer suitable for police work. Bottom line, it is never acceptable to hit a dog under the guise of 'correction', and the consequences could be lifelong on the canine.

Back in the 1980s, I worked with a man who used to train German shepherd dogs for the police departments and security companies. It takes a lot of time to train dogs . One thing I learned is that dogs have different personalities like most animals, I remember he used to tell right away which dogs were good training material, and sometimes a dog would learn very fast. Other times, it takes longer,I remember ( he was a Vietnam veteran, and that's where he learned to train military dogs) he told me that German shepherd dogs are the best for that kind of work but that dog breed takes longer to mature, it's important to get the right temperament dog or things like this can happen, many people believe that by having a German shepherd dog it all it takes.

The dog had no reason to be sent in the suspect didn’t run, the suspect didn’t show aggression or any other reason to suspect he was a threat or passively aggressively assaulting anyone he was generally a victim now and even if he did commit the crime it’ll be lessor because of the dog handler.
