  • Did my first annual condition inspection today. Because I built the plane, I was able to get a Repairman License for this plane only. It allows me to repair and inspect this plane myself. If you don't have one, you would need an A&P mechanic to do the annual inspections. You can still do any work on it yourself though.

    Nice, Don. Going over everything is top notch! Suggestion: Since the floorboard is inaccessible, ya might consider cutting a keyhole slot to accept an attachment that backs up a seatbelt rig, like a washer would backing up an eye bolt to suspend an object.. it's a thought...
    Good to hear you're tackling the tail wheel as you stated, the less vibration, the less chances of fatigue on the airframe and bolts, etc., breaking, loosing or coming off! Stay safe!

    I'm sure you know this better than I do but for the sake of thoroughness: If you have an O2 sensor on each side of the engine, I recommend checking the fuel trims to see if that exhaust leak at the head is affecting your mixture. I'm currently dealing with such a leak on an LS engine which is causing a very high fuel trim and fouling plugs on that side. Anyway, thanks for the update!

    • @Dynodon64

    For the log entry, just reference your operating limitations that are in the plane (you do keep the originals in the plane, right?) Hi Don, looking good. I have one suggestion, I did a ground up restoration of a Hiller helicopter and we have those style worm clamps all over the scat hose for the induction, oil cooler , carb heat and cabin heat. I put a little .032 safety wire on every one of the screws just for added security. You might consider that for your engine. Be safe and best of luck on your first flight !

    You should do the oil change and cut open the oil filter as part of the condition inspection.. read the “engine” group and you are supposed to check screens ect for metal. Appendix D to part 43 (d) (3) “Internal engine-for cylinder compression and for metal particles or foreign matter on screens and sump drain plugs. If there is weak cylinder compression, for improper internal condition and improper internal tolerances.”

    • @Dynodon64
      @Dynodon64  2 місяці тому +1

      When I do the oil change, I can check the filter. I'm not pulling the oil pan to check that screen for a condition inspection. This isn't a certified aircraft engine. But I do see your point.
      I completely forgot about the leak down test. I do have a gauge set, that needs a few fixes to be useable. I haven't signed it off yet, so I will do one this coming weekend. I may go ahead and change the oil as well. There isn't any timing to check or set, because it is fuel injected and fixed. Thanks for the heads up.

    • @thomasaltruda
      @thomasaltruda 2 місяці тому +1

      @@Dynodon64 you don’t have to pull the pan and check the oil pickup screen.. just cut open the filter. When they talk about “checking screens” this is because lots of engines have checkable screens in place of a filter.

    • @Dynodon64
      @Dynodon64  2 місяці тому

      Yes a wet sump. A lot of times, you would go 50 hours. It boils down to the engine and how dirty it gets. The newest way is to send a sample to a lab and have it tested. They will recommend a time frame based on how many hours were on the oil when tested.
