Granddad groundlooped and wrecked a full-scale F4U while in the Navy. He did say that the rudder becomes effective "all at once", which your aircraft seems to have replicated that handling characteristic, faithfully. ;-)
Congrats on the Anniversary! Thanks for sharing this update on the plane. Yes, take your time with it. It's about your safety which should be top priority. Stay safe and God bless.
Hey Don , first of all , I can't believe anyone would bash any of these videos ! Your safety is number one and protecting that beautiful Corsair ! I really appreciate you explaining what your doing and how things work and function on the plane . I saw in the other video it actually left the ground and flew !! Keep on taking your time and correcting the little things . Even though I can't wait to see you fly it , I want it to be a celebration for you and something you can really enjoy !!
Mechanical fuel float should be fine. Great idea to do a gallon-by-gallon filling and know exactly how much fuel remains for each quarter tank. I had a friend get in trouble with a new plane that had a similar sump type tank and the gauge said 1/4 tank on a 20-gallon tank and it was less than 2 gallons not 5 gallons. He made it and refueled safely, but the gauge was sure going down fast. He then did the test of filling the tank 5 gallons at a time and discovered the issue with the sump and float gauge. He ended up with an ultrasonic fuel tank gauge that he electronically calibrated by refilling the tank one gallon at a time. I really enjoy your updates and I'm looking forward to seeing your continued, intentional, safe progress.
Totally agree with checking fluid levels in on ground configuration and verify gauges in flying config. by adding gal/qrts as needed. Thanks for the video update. Yeah..seems like 6 yrs. What a beauty thou.
I’ve been following you for a while now Don. Congratulations on a beautiful build. I had a friend many years ago that had a war p-47. He had a continental 0-200 on his and it was a great flying little plane. I just finished my RV-6a and first flight was a non event. I understand your approach to first flight in this plane. It’s going to be very different from anything you’ve flown before. As long as your weight and balance is good and you are under the recommended gross weight it should fly safely. Just fyi there is a school of thought that crow hoping is more likely to lead to an accident than just taking off, climbing to altitude, learning where the stall is and then returning to land with good numbers for the approach speed. At the end of the day it’s your decision and I know you have probably thought about this from every angle. I’m pulling for you and I’m excited to see the first flight when you and the plane are ready. There is only one person on the planet who gets to make that decision. I know you will do great and I’ll be praying for a great first flight.
Glad to see it coming along. In all seriousness, when do you expect your first flight? I know a lot of us are anxious to see this beautiful bird in the sky!

Great job my friend it's looking good can't wait to see your actual lift off video whenever you are ready no one can tell you when it is time only you know that😊
great series, and yes when you are ready to take the first flight it will happen. I do have a quick question however, are you the same DynoDon who did a DIY jet engine based around a automobile turbo charger?
History reveals that taking time to sort out every detail and not rushing a project is very wise. How long did it take to develop the original Corsair? How long did it take to work out all the bugs so that pilots were safer and competent in take-off and landing? You don't have a critical deadline to meet, so doing what you are doing is very wise.
YAWN......its been 12 years this guy has been working on this plane !.....we put man on the moon in less time !......If he is afraid to fly it....he should sell it !
Great progress report. Do you have a safety for the oil filter? Had a friend with sonex an his oil filter vibrated loose an losted oil pressure during test flight. His fix was a band clamp tight around the filter an then safety wire the clamp to hard point. The friction didn't allow filter to vibrate loose. Just keep eye out for little safety things to prevent a larger issue.
Can’t wait to see it lift off 🫡. Don’t let the comments get to ya, they’re obviously not pilots or anyone who’s built something that flies 😂…ok some may be pilots giving you crap but I’m sure you know the difference. There’s old pilots and bold pilots ….mad respect 🫡…also even according to the FARS the only time a fuel gauge is required to be accurate is when it says it’s empty
Looking forward to seeing you in your bird flying Don. BUT do take your time to make sure it's ready to go. It's your butt in the saddle, so until you have everything checked-double checked etc and YOU are satisfied, just ignore the armchair 'pilots' and their jabs. I've always found the tail/rudder on the corsair to be kind of odd. Compared to aircraft about the same size and the same engine, they seemed to have rudders twice the size of the Corsair. Any ways, your build is looking GREAT Don ;}>
The original F4-U was designed with a built -in offset on the vertical tail to help counteract torque, a solution that allowed the use of a smaller tail.
The things I did in this video, were for peace of mind. Taking advantage of the down time is all. The plane has run long enough, to prove it should be reliable. Not having any problems with the engine and it tracks well now. Shouldn't be long now.
I got it on Ebay. Almost all of these ones are coming from China. So the wait is long. www.ebay.com/itm/395447228720?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=cgulu6zqrvi&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=eF6m8p-3R8a&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY This is the type here.
If you think it will fly at 75 IAS (4,000 RPM) but be a bit marginal, at what engine speed do you think you'll cruise? Also, are you able to change/adjust the pitch of the prop blades if necessary? Thanks for the update!
Not fly at 75, but just lift off and pull power to set back down. It of course will need more than 75 to climb out. Climb out will be @120. 4500 rpm will be cruise. Prop is ground adjustable.
Thanks for the report and future intentions towards flight brother, do you aim to get above and break any ground effect or settle on and utilise it with power on ? : )
Regarding Multi-Viscosity Oils, like 10W-30, 10W-40. 10W-40 is a 40 Weight that flows like 10 in the Winter, hence the W after the 10 (but lubricates like 40). Before multi-viscosity oils, people would prepare their cars for winter by draining the 40 weight and refilling it with 30 weight. You shouldn't have any flow issues running a multi-viscosity oil, even at altitude; unless the temp drops below 10 Degrees Fahrenheit (if it does, you'll be a popsicle anyway). Regarding your comment about "1/2 Way runway markers"... I don't see any, looking at the satellite view of Meadville, on Google Maps. You may want to take that orange cone from the hangar and place it at the halfway point, near the runway.
Why are people just don't understand you're flying in the darn thing you have to test and test over again that's right take your time before you fly in that I built a cozy I know how long it takes

Dynodon, re oil level. You should position the aircraft in its proper flying position and Check Oil Dip Stick. Once you confirm Oil level is correct, then position aircraft in its proper parked position. Check Oil Dip Stick and mark that oil level. Now you will know Indicated full oil level at parked position.

What's wrong with making everything better, when you have down time? I can't fly it in this weather. So work on the little things, so they don't become bigger things.

And, once I realised how very deeply I'd dug myself into the Hole..., I decided to avoid damaging my Children any further, and I haven't inflicted any "Dad's new Girlfriend" fantasies onto them...; so (perhaps therefore) my two of my wife's kids have turned out a lot happier and more functional than did the two kids whom she stuck with having me for a Stepfather (that's too sad a story to go into here - this side of the tale has been almost light-hearted by comparison...{!} ).
So, yeah, if you can be happy together after 17 years, on Wife number 2, then cherish her and enjoy the fruits of your good sense...; and if you know anyone sufficiently young & dumb as to be "carving notches on their Belt, adding conquests to their Tally-board of Foolishness - then do feel free to use me, and my tale of matrimonial misery to warn them of the phenomenon, and consequences, of
Acquired Shit-Magnet Effect being the lingering sequalae following a selfishly, promiscuously, mis-spent Youth !
If some of us old Fools can bear to pass on such learnings, without "embarrassment", then think of how many children may be spared having to put up with their Biological Parents' lousy taste in "New Partners" and endlessly recombinant Brady Bunches, screaming and fighting, and staging Street Theatre for their Neighbours - taking turns, in every Street in the Suburbs...(!).
And, if that works, then me taking my "Lumps" from my bad decisions hasn't been a total disaster (?) !
Whatever happened to all the people who made money from making
"The Brady Bunch" TV Show..., as their due Karma for inspiring so very many millions of people to believe in what amounts to being "Serial Monogamy", as a functionally acceptable Lifestyle - and thereby confusing and confounding all their Children ; then it may not have been quite sufficiently harsh, perhaps...?
I know them to be very lucky that I'm not in charge of distributing Just(ifiable ?) Deserts to the naughty and the selfish ; because I might well make an even bigger mess of things than what's happening now, all around us (!).
Such is life,
Have a good one.
Stay safe.
;-p
Ciao !
That tail wheel looks like it belongs there
It's working great. I am very pleased with it. Just needed a larger bolt.
Go fly this thing’
When it's ready, it will tell me.
Just started watching your video I have not seen everyone but question do you or are you running a dry sump PS did you ever decide tow or tow out lol. Calibrate the tank knowing where the gauge is very important good thing to do. do not worry about the haters you couldn't make a statement in this world or in public without somebody hating it just remember if they hate it they had to watch it it helps you I'm only 153 subscribers and a Marty starting to get haters it is what it is and you guys block their comments to where they cannot be seen and they don't know it. PS what do you think cruise speed will be
No room for a dry sump, and it's too complicated and will only add weight. Cruise in these planes is @150 mph.
Fixing wheels instead of flying? Safety first!
"Happy 17TH Wedding Aniversary, Don!"
I know you drive for UBER. Hey, Don? Guess what? I got my Diamond status back with UBER! $250.00 bonus, Baby!" 4.94 star rating!
I can't believe it's been 6 years since you started building SuesyBell and still haven't flown her.😟
Thanks Richard. I've been Diamond for @ 5 years. Just got my star back up to 4.99 a few months ago. Congrats on the bonus. I got one in Feburary.
Oops! I stopped your video just before you described the oil level solution I gave you below. Guess we're on the same page anyway?
It's not about flying, it's all about the build. If it can be engineered, it can be over engineered. It will be time to retire it soon. It's getting worn out from being taken apart repeatedly.
What's wrong with making everything better, when you have down time? I can't fly it in this weather. So work on the little things, so they don't become bigger things.
Don, you keep the pace that works for you. Testing a new airplane is serious business and should be taken in planned and measured steps. If people bitch about it, boot their asses off so they have plenty of time to build and test their own airplanes!
Thank you for that.
@@Dynodon64 Have you gotten a tailwheel endorsement yet?
CASTROL Power1 4T Full Syn10w-40 GL-5 $11/qt
I'll see where it falls on the list of good oil.
Prettiest hangar queen ever!
If that's all it will ever be, I'm fine with that too.
Look, there's many restaurants that would love to have it on a pedestal on their roof. Sometimes it's just the best decision. Nothing wrong with that. I'd hate to see that tail wheel be the end of you. Think it over,
Whatever😂😂😂
There's nothing wrong with the tailwheel. With me in the plane, there is only @60 pounds on it.
Get a set of metric drills and, or reamers!
I've never taken off a tail drager, in one, not the pilot!
I'm curious how much torque affects once you take off.
Have you any calculations on estimated take off/stall speeds are?
Take your time! I wanna see more episodes!
Torque is always an issue, even in flight. That's why you use trim tabs. It should take off @70 mph. Stalls are only a guess @50-70.
@@Dynodon64 I bet it'll float with the flaps extended! Good job on everything!
not much of a weather update , your tail wheel is not good
One more time and you're out of here.
Terrible click-bait delays. Only 9 years 360 days to go.
This is your only warning, next one and your gone.
he'll starve before he flies this.
Your brain seems a bit malnourished if you really think that.
R u ever going to fly this thing or r u just going to run it up and down the runway.this is being dragged out way too long.
Brother he is building an airplane, if you rush it you die. shut tf up lmaoo
@@snipereliete Well said. It's just click-bait.
You've probably built a lot of planes. So I guess you would know when a homebuilt plane is ready.
@Chuck-se5hh please explain how this video is click bait
No, is that what you want to hear? So there is no need for you to come back, bye.
