In this video I'll be sharing with you some photos I took at an office building built in 1987. Sounds exciting, right? But this place is no ordinary building from 1987. It's a time capsule from 1987. It's oozing 1987. It's a John Hughes movie in building form. It wasn't just built in 1987...it was designed by the architectural firm "Genesis, Hughes, and Astley".
Alright that last joke is a stretch, but you get what I'm saying.
I've recently become a bit enthralled with the late-80's early-90's era. I used to hate its style, fashion, and music, but as they say "time makes fools of us all." Now I love it. I have Stranger Things, Ready Player One, and Poolside FM to thank for that.
With my newfound appreciation for this era, I set out to photograph this time capsule of a building to hopefully capture a slice of that bygone time.
These pictures are either going to be up your alley, or they won't be. And that's fine, that's a risk I'm willing to take. The photos I took of the vacant suite will hopefully be part of a much larger series of photos I'll be calling "Dead Inside" - images of apocalyptic corporate life. Maybe I'll never stumble upon a gem of a building like this ever again, but I sure hope this isn't the last time I can put my Mamiya 645 Pro TL to use and capture some haunting images of dying buildings.
All of the images were shot on Fuji Pro 400H medium format film using a Mamiya 645 Pro TL and a Fujifilm GA645zi. I pushed the film to achieve increased contrast and grain, so as to better harken back to that retro feeling.
And if you want a fun drinking game...take a shot every time I say "vibe" in this video. Just don't drive for a couple days after.

You know you're a true photographer when you make statements like: "I went back, excitedly, to shoot some crappy old carpet."
By the way, the Japanese have a concept for what you're describing in these photos: Wabi Sabi. It means perfection in imperfection--a kind of melancholy, real-world, weathered, broken-and-repaired, dying, suffering...kind-of-thing.
I think another good description would be liminal spaces. A feeling of distant nostalgia, but also emptiness for some reason

Edit: Now that I've also seen the pictures I wish there'd be a double like-button. A few years ago I probably wouldn't have cared for them, but today I think they are more interesting than most other photos I've seen in a long time. Your and your family/friends description of the feelings evoked is spot on I think.

I almost choked on my xray specs! That opening is hilarious and I love the fact you seem shy at admitting you like this incredible shots. If someone can't see how good these are they aren't worth listening too. Not many folk can muster up such tight comps and atmosphere from anything let alone an old 80's mall. In awe, just great.

Your videos only get better, your passion is contagious, and I fully understand you going back to shoot the carpet. Whenever I see one of this videos I want to grab my camera and shoot.
So many of those shots are stunning, the staircase at 10.41 is compelling and a beautiful composition, film has done something digital couldn't with that, makes me feel weird but I keep looking at it, it's like deja vu, an emotional overload. And you and your friend nailed it Nick. I worked dressed in a suit in a place not unlike like that until 1999. Quit and got in to construction, outside a lot of the time and my soul has thanked me! Man your work's good.

I love it! My era of corporate reality was 1983-1994 and these pictures really hit the nail on the head with me. "Dead Inside", reminded me of corporate headquarters in Livermore CA, now long gone.
You were right in the thick of this era. I bet you saw more than your share of shoulder pads.

that poolside site has waken something in me, something so radically hip-horrible yet unstoppably cool. Amazing photos as usual, just when it seems like it might be a rehash, you keep going and doing something different. Inspiring work!
This reminded me of an engineering building at nuclear plant I visited a few years ago. One Friday in the late 80s, they sent everyone home and canceled construction of the plant. It looked like they had left the day before I arrived. Old half-read newpapers and magazines were at people's desks along with mugs that still contained coffee and daily calendars that hadn't been changed in 25 years. It truly looked like a zombie apocalypse or that I had stepped back in time. Sadly, I was unable to take pictures, but it was such an odd experience that I'll never forget it.

There’s nothing like the smell of a public library that hasn’t changed the carpet or curtains since 95’. The look, the smells, the or the ambiance give you a funny feeling inside. Maybe nostalgia, or trauma from the late book fees - I don’t know but it takes you back to simpler times!

Alright, these images really capture the time and the explanation is good. Please keep them coming. I enjoyed the outdoor images just as much as the carpet images. There is a risk of getting lost in the nostalgia trend that I feel is ongoing still but I trust in your unique style and skill to make this consistent enough to not just be a trend and to mean something beyond 'cool, pastel colors'. Excited to see more images like these.
Love the photos. Keep them coming. Because making them has meaning for you they have meaning for us. It is far harder to derive meaning from a Joshua Tree - unless you have as visceral a reaction to a tree as you do to the thought of wasting your whole life in an 1980s office!

@@nickcarverphoto Haha, it is. I worked at a company like that man. It even had almost the same name. No joke. We used to kick and beat the print machine. And the coffee machine. And my boss only cared about his forms, time punch cards and excel sheets. Total madness haha.

Liked all the pics...love the "suite" series; especially the vertical blinds and the carpeted/soft side partition walls. Reminds me SO much of the various offices I inhabited during that timeframe. Makes me think...Man, I'm glad I'm retired now!

All my film shooting was done during the '80s because well, that's all there was. I actually shot Velvia 50 mostly because it was the '80s and it was just vibrant saturated goodness and I loved it. The nostalgia is strong with this one. Those were some excellent shots sir.

The era I started in photography at an advertising agency photo dept. We used the early Mamiya 645's, Nikon F (the battery pack for the motor drive you wore over your shoulder)and an old Calumet 5x4 camera. New subscriber, great videos.

I love the 80’s & 90’s and that building is deep fried gold. Great series and series title! Architectural photography is probably what I get most excited about these days, but it’s gotta be old buildings with character. Potted palm plants are one of my most favorite compositional elements. Great find!

I loved this video and your photos on Instagram. I photograph on film (mostly) the old and/or abandoned places around Tucson and Southern Arizona. I want to record them before they are gone.

I was born in 75 in ireland and this really gets me .Every thing seemed to have three dimensional geometric(al) shapes printed in primary colours back then.very Miami vice .We had nothing like this around here but it loooks so familiar to me . American culture just seeps in from movies music and tv I guess . If photography is there to stir emotions you have definitely done that here Nick great job man. This is definitely up there with your best work for me .

Love this stuff to bits! I have a passion for aged works of human kind and the shelter from nature it represents, like a sun bleached railway sleeper giving a hint of long past oil stains or buildings like these. Seems to touch the soul of many people. Thank you, really great images, they touched my soul.

Very interesting video. I loved the late 80, the best time in my life. I was 35-40 young and really enjoyed life. It was also that time I got my first real Camera, a Hasselblad. Still have it today and using it.
Ready Player One was fantastic for those who lived through the 80s. Thank you for going out on a limb and sharing them. I actually like them quite a bit. I also think that as the 80s "get older" that these photos will only become more interesting. Thanks!

Wow we are getting spoiled lately! What a break from the norm. I was born in 1981 so I know this architecture all too well. Reminds me of a private elementary school I attended in San Dimas in 1990 that I kid you not, looks JUST like this. I’m sure it’s still there.
Pasadena city college also maintains a building from this era.

Great video! There are some unbelievable 50's and 60's era Miami buildings that have this "La Cubana" aura about them. Similar concept, different era.

Wow that is some good stuff. It's amazing how that era just stamps itself. I'm from the East Coast but a corporate building from 1987 would look exactly the same in New England as it does in California minus the palm trees.

'Dead Inside' great title and for somebody like me who is a photographer and a natural outdoor person, but has had to get the corporate job to pay the bills, can totally understand where you're coming from!!
Really love the abstract interior shots and that Fuji Pro 400 was the perfect choice of film.

Great work! I rediscovered film photography earlier this year, and one of the first cameras I bought was the camera I dreamed of owning when I was 15 years old back in 1987. The Mamiya 645 Super with an AE-prism finder and an electric winder. I thought it looked so cool and modern in the ads in the photo magazines back then. I have a couple of lenses, but the 55mm f2.8 gets the most use. But I can't decide if I love or hate the sound of that power winder, though.

I know exactly what you mean as I’ve been doing a similar project! Also since building a darkroom again after years away from traditional printing it’s given me a real boost to get out there again! I had forgotten how good things look shot on film! Digital is wonderful but it’s never given me the same buzz as processing my own start to finish! I’m just about to load my RB67 with Portra and the other back with ilford FP4 ahhhh! Life is good, 😎😎👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🍻

Absolutely fantastic! The time machine effect has a strong effect on the psyche.
It's kind of amazing that late 80's architecture has already become archeology matter! This building was a paradigm of what once was called "post-modern" architecture (not the most significant example of it, though) and 30+ years later only, this is considered kitsch as it could be, but a photographer comes to immortalize it, and that is a good thing, because it is very likely that next tenant will probably completely transform it or just level it to the ground and build something else on it. So your work - and I very much like that you're doing it on film - is more like archeology. A testament of what was once and soon be gone. Music of that time remains (you can use a short excerpt as long as you quote the copyright owners) but this office building will probably soon be gone and it will only live in the memory of the people that once worked there and... your pictures. Keep on doing that. It's important that someone does it.
