    Our buses here in Bloomington, IN have not yet reached this level of technology. Hopefully one day, but until then, "BACK DOOR!".

    Another issue with the rear door that wasn't talked about in the video is fare evasion, which happens a lot in New York City. By far, that's caused bus operators to no longer automatically open the rear doors, which passengers hate since they have no clue how to use the rear doors when there's literally instructions on how to. I definitely feel the heat inside of operators having to deal with rear door fare evasion so they won't get in trouble by their supervisors and bosses, but having like 3 people scream at you "BACK DOOR" for something they can do themselves is another. Thanks for covering this topic.

      I honestly feel like places like New York City should frankly adopt all door boarding to alleviate crowd levels though that fare issue could be annoying. Still the entire US manual back door concept is baffling to me as a European.

      In fact in NYC. The door actually announces “Touch yellow tape to open doors”. NYC hasn’t had automatic doors for a while. Their new payment system was supposed to allow all door boarding but it’s slow to roll out.

    In New York City, MTA bus operators have the option to unlock the rear doors, and open the rear doors fully. They also have a audio that when the rear doors are open, it says " Touch yellow tape to open doors ". But people still get confused on why they don't open.

    Even on the old RTS buses with the same feature when the green light comes on, the passenger walks to the rear door and will scream out, "Back Door!" I'm like, "Come on, there's instructions right there!" The sticker clearly says "wait for light then open door." On the bars it reads, "Push bar to open door."

  • @thebronybusfan4740

    Happens everytime. Our backdoors don't have that type of feature. They just work when the operator turns the door switch position. The door is opening, some with delays or you don't noticed and get hit with the "BACK DOOR." Or they won't request a stop even when approaching a major transit stop then they get mad at you for giving them the next stop.
    Also, Happy Birthday!! Thank you for sharing us the bus driving moments ad an operator. It certainly entertains us all!

    So true. Some drivers open rear doors and some don't. I ride buses everyday and when the light comes on and doors don't open passengers yell back door when theres a button that says open like they don't know what to do. It's so annoying when they don't look for the button to open the rear door.. In the state I'm in there's 2 buttons by the rear door. 1 for stop request and 1 for open the doors. It's quite simple.

    In London usually you press the bell and wait till you get to your stop and then the bus driver will open the rear door for you but if the bus driver refuses or forgots, you can tell the bus driver nicely to open the door and the bus driver should open the rear doors or there's the emergency door open button that you can use to open the rear door yourself.

We recently had to stop the new route masters with 3 doors due to fair bunkers. The bus was suppose to replace bendy buses which had the same problem but didnt rly help. Now you can only enter threw the front door on any bus.

    Buses where I live, even our brand new order of 2022’s, omit this feature. I’m really not sure why either. Servicing the door yourself when the driver is taking fare or giving someone directions saves them the added time of reaching over to flip a door switch when you could open it yourself.
    It’s insignificant, sure, but the seconds add up and eventually you’re behind when you encompass traffic and traffic lights into the situation.
    Great video as always, my man.

    Hey there Kiwan, I hope I spelled your name right, I love your videos, and as a frequent bus commuter here in the city of Orlando with Lynx, I have a couple of cents to add to the whole back door debate on why some passengers call out to the driver to open the back door. I am not sure how big the route network is for Sacramento's bus system, but with Lynx here in Orlando, the network is MASSIVE covering across three counties and roughly around a hundred different bus routes. From taking the Lynx buses for over 5 years now, upon further observation, a lot of drivers that do arrive to stops we have requested, and have passengers trying to board the bus at the same time, the majority of the time is that drivers will forget to unlock the back door for us trying to exit the bus. If I ever am in that scenario when I have no choice but to exit through the back door, and the back door is still locked, of course I'm gonna give a shout to the driver, but on a friendlier tone and thank them upon stepping off of the bus, as I do understand that being a bus driver isn't an easy job. That's probably most likely the case of why passengers shout to the driver about the back door is because some other drivers forget to unlock the back door upon arriving at a bus stop that was requested. Hope you have a great day & drive safely!

    • @BusDriverLife
      @BusDriverLife  2 роки тому

    My company still has buses with the push out type doors. The trick is to push outwards on the yellow handle and keep pushing to open the door. There are at least two signs with instructions on how to open the door. As this type of bus is being withdrawn (only five left) it's been amusing watching passengers forget how to open the door. Frequently I have to instruct "push yellow handle outwards"... As an aside, if passengers would use the expression "back door please", its much nicer for the driver.

    Hi folks, many thanks for your interesting and very entertaining clip! I don't understand the complexity with doors in the US! When I went to NYC 20 years ago, I encountered the same problematic! Here in Europe you just open the door with a button next to the door which is also used to request a stop!It is also worth mentioning that if the driver gives the door free, it is fully passenger operated. There is a button next to the door as well as outside .Once nobody uses the door for, say 10 seconds, it closes automatically. If the doors needs to be reopened again, either button in or outside needs to be pushed Most buses have two rear doors! Sometimes there is even information which says to push the button to open doors. A remark to ticketing: in Switzerland there is mainly self-service on buses that means you enter by any door, if need be, you can buy the ticket from the driver, paying even with credit cards! Sometimes there will be a ticketing machine onboard the bus. There are random ticket controls, the fine for the first time caught without ticket is a 100.-- Swiss-Francs, equivalent to Dollars. In recidive cases the fine is augmented. The system seems to be working! Greetings from Switzerland!

    On SEPTA, we gotta shout for the back door. They always open the front door, but never the back. And as far as I've seen, we don't have the light to push.

    The interlock on most of these buses is made to open these doors completely without having to have them shout at you, completely engage the interlock,most of these Mta buses have that feature,also when doing the night bus runs,you do not want to engage it all the way to allow homeless people sneaking in.

    Here in Cleveland, OH, our back doors have always been controlled by the driver. The door opener has Back, Closed, Front & Front & Back labels. Right now in Cleveland we have Gillig BRT Plus (both Diesel & CNG), and NABI buses (which are being phased out now that Triskett Garage finally got their CNG tanks), and New Flyer 60ft (both Diesel & CNG Hybrid). Some cities do have push to open, but we never have here in Cleveland. I see someone in the comments talk about fare evasion, you are not allowed to enter thru the back doors here, Our Cleveland RTA is enter the front, exit the rear. But we still have old school fareboxes or the app you must show the driver since the buses don't have scanners. Currently only our Heavy Rail trains are on the trust system (which you can literally take anywhere without paying unless you go Downtown where they check). Our Light Rail trains you still have to pay when you enter eastbound or pay when you get off westbound. Our Healthline BRT was on the trust system but they pout fareboxes back on because of fare evasion.

    New York City is not allowing rear doors to open right now because of fare jumpers. I wonder how long that's going to last. They said they're losing 12 million dollars a week to fare jumping on the buses as well as the subways.

  • @NoJusticeNoPeace

    The problem is the driver controls when the rear door is active, and doesn't always activate it. By the time I've waited for the door to open, pushed on it once to try to get it to open and had nothing happen, then looked to the front of the bus to see whether the driver has noticed and _now_ activated the door to allow it to open, enough time has passed that I've missed my stop and the bus is already in motion. If it's just a block or two to the next stop it's not a problem, but when it's a ten minute ride to the next stop it and you're on a schedule or trying to transfer, it becomes something much bigger.
    Being an introvert I don't generally shout at the driver and just avoid transit whenever I can, but I can understand why people _do_ shout to make sure it doesn't happen to them.

    As a European this stuff is just really alien and weird as every time a stop is requested, the driver will open the back door. Heck over here buses with 3 doors are extremely common as it helps with getting people off the bus faster, spending less time at stops and being able to more closely stick to the timetable. Heck in my own local area we have a ton of Iveco Crossway LE models, some with 2 doors a front and middle, and others with 3, a front middle and smaller back door behind the rear axle. The difference on deboarding a full bus at the train station from a 2 door and a 3 door bus can be as much as 30 seconds, as I've often found 3 doors buses emptied in just 12 or so seconds while a 2 door bus would take upwards of 40 seconds to do the same. Plus the driver is often trained to close the door as soon as the last exiting passenger is out, leaving no time for people to rush in through the back as the doorway the entire time will be blocked by people exiting the bus. Simple ebb and flow.
    And thats not mentioning stuff like how some cities or routes allow for all door boarding.

    Most passengers can't even read the giant destination signs on the buses and you expect them to be able to read the "push to exit" signs on the doors. You have clearly set your standards way too high.

    That door has 10 signs on it and the most important ones are not at the sight level. Not sure how are you expecting people to visually process 10 signs on a split second.

    • @BusDriverLife
      @BusDriverLife  2 роки тому

      I never said I expect someone to process 10 signs in a split second. Normally people approach the door before the bus even stops so that leaves enough time to scan the door for info. Honestly in most cases regular passengers already understand how it works but they still give drivers a difficult time. I understand though..I’m just a bus driver so I should just shut up and drive. 😎

      @@BusDriverLife This is just my honest opinion as someone that lives in Europe. If I would have been in that bus I would have not seen or understood how to get off it. Here all I have to do is press a button that says "Stop" and the buss driver will stop at the next buss stop and open the rear door. It cannot be any easier than that.

    On go Raleigh buses they don’t have the option to do that. Only thing that has on the door “do not lean on door” and “caution stand back from door” on top of door it says “exit door” it’s also in Spanish. I even asked the bus driver he said unfortunately it doesn’t have anything like that. I always was a person that would exit the back of the bus but if the driver didn’t open it I would say back door and they didn’t here me I would jest go to the front door instead of jest standing back there because after you keep saying back door. You probably could have jest went out of the front door a couple of times over again.

    These buses are pr*stitutes bcuz they are used by random ppl everyday so the touchpad area is worn & doesn't always respond as it should, which is how "BACK DOOR!" occurs 💯
    The old buses are classic memories, where the doors used to flop around & you can hear the outside air seeping in & even sometimes, Pop goes the Wiesel! The doors randomly fly/pop open at red lighs and back closed..😭 Let's not forget when the doors didn't shut bcuz they got stuck in the snow bank bcuz the driver pulled too close & usually it was a brave passenger that pulled the doors to get it unstuck! 💪😂😂😂 ,💯
