1 EC 2= Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker, EVH. I have been lucky enough to see them all play live. Peter Green and Paul Kossoff are two players that I am only now getting to appreciate fully the more I really listen to them - better late than never 👍 Seeing Fleetwood Mac on tv playing “Need Your Love So Bad” made me realise there was something very special about Greeny that was different from Eric Clapton, who was always my No.1. Seeing Free playing “Mr Big” at the Isle of White Festival on UA-cam has got me into Koss lately. Jeff Beck is a genius - “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” the track that turned my head. Gary Moore was a great writer as well as player - the Back On The Streets album his most versatile and always my favourite. Michael Schenker has a great sense of melody and is such a precise riff and rhythm player. Edward Van Halen - much looser but such a great sense of rhythm and seamless transitions between picked lines, riffs, harmonics, whammy bar and partial chords. And they all only needed to play one note and you know it’s them. Except for Eddie - I don’t know if he ever played just one note 🤣
We match for most: Leslie West for his simple, yet awesome phrasing and unique vibrato. Peter Green - of course - Paul Kossof, 2 legends, Eric Clapton - unavoidable - so is Hendrix, Michael Bloomfield and recently a Canadian I (re)discovered : Colin James ! :) Also, an outsider known for his demos on Peach's UA-cam demo channel: Jack Griffiths. Great player. Beck is amazing, but the thing I don't like about him is his tone: trebly, ear-piercing, which is a shame considering the capabilities of the guy... As to Johnny Depp, despite the cool looks and the vintage guitar collection... if he wasn't Johnny Depp, he wouldn't be admitted on stage to share performances with these huge guitarists. Only Keith can play a guitar down to his knees, sound good and not be ridiculous :)) Cheers guys

Mine are “boring:” Clapton, Green, Keaggy, Hendrix, Page. I mean 4 of those guys are on everyone’s list, but they are favorites (and is it any wonder?). However, there’s a place for “5 (or however many you want) guitarists you may not know so well who are awesome.“ Then you’d have a couple of videos instead of one.

Plus have to add another 5 shockingly missing (!) greats: Charlie Christian, Lonnie Johnson, Eddie Lang, Johnny Smith, Barney Kessel. Possible American counterparts to Davy Graham: Sandy Bull and John Fahey? And Ramon how could you leave off Oscar Aleman??? Lastly need to sneak in a couple of my favorite outside choices: Mary Halvorson and Miles Okazaki
I don't think it is possible to just cite 5 guitarists in this comment section so I'm going to pick another 5 under the assumed name of Englebert Snodgrass. The first electric guitar sound I ever noticed was 'Because They're Young' by Duane Eddy which Alan Freeman used as his theme tune on the radio. I just loved that magical 'twang' sound. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. Up until that moment, I quite liked the trumpet. Something else which 'got me' when I was growing up was Jeff Beck's playing on The Yardbirds 'Under, Over, Sideways Down... Next came Peter Green with The Supernatural, followed closely by Jeremy Spencer's slide playing...... F.....ing amazing. Saw them live quite a few times. Another pivotal moment for me after hearing Davey Graham's 'Leaving Blues' was Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield playing East West on a Paul Butterfield album. If you've never heard it, check it out out. I can't settle for just 5 players. It's just not possible. Gary Moore playing Parisienne Walkways has to be in anyone's top choices. Last but not least...... Mickey Jones and Deke Leonard playing 'Spunk Rock' with Man is amazing. Oh.... and Robert Fripp playing what ever it is he plays....... Sorry to go on...... Lol

Glad you mentioned Davey Graham because I heard him playing 'Leaving Blues' with a sitar-sounding solo in 1967 and immediately dropped the blues licks from my playing and replaced them with Ragas... For a while..... Lol.
I think somebody must've shown Johnny Depp how to play the occasional E or A chord on guitar with an Amp turned real loud matted to a distortion box. I can't stand seeing him pick up the thing. Thanks Bob.
Missed this. My very personal top 5 fav (electric) players in no particular order after Peter Green/Roy Buchanan joint first. Not just the notes, but the tones from all 5 masters. Peter Geen. (All day long) Mick Box. (Check out the Salisbury album, then check his wha) Roy Buchanan. (Check out Down by the River, live from Roy's Anthology. Roy was guitar.) Neil Schon. (Santana 3rd Album is where electric guitar reached utopia and screamed. Schon just stole it from Carlos-and so young, no guitarist can ignore Santana 3) Jeff Beck. ("I heard the sounds in my head, but they were coming first from Buchanan") Ok it has to be 5, but I can't leave this without mentioning Mick Taylor because of his cutting LP tones and ultimate blues solo on Mayall's "Marriage Madness". Also Buddy Whittington. I think it's got to be a perfect ten next time!

The jazz based guys are much more advanced than the rock guys. Joe Pass, George Benson, Pat Martino, Larry Carlton, and John McLaughlin. Then you have the true innovators versus everyone else. There are many, many others e.g. Tommy Emanuel, Doc Watson, Alan Holdsworth.. For rockers: Van Halen, SRV, Derek Trucks, Select Clapton, Hendrix. That’s a good start.
Ok the big winner here is Robben Ford - dear me Ford himself would not palce himself here in this company - Ford is a high quality Bay Area rock blues player & good as he is and blues lover that I am (thus I know ford from his 1973 recordings) the wrold aboslutley does not need more rock-blues. Many ould choose Bloomfield & some Bishop, over Ford. They & Harvey Madnel were the big news where Ford cut his teeth. And now wiith this smart video, McLaughlin, Holdwroth fans could feel querrisome. Querious? When JM tore up The Tongit Show with Cherokee, via wireles electric (the artist walked out & sat with band already playing, and his downbeat; show producer DeCordova whoops with exitement)) - that night in 1982 it was all over. Add the trio LP with deJohnette & deFrancesco - the Folloish Heart at friday Night in SF - Power Of Love by Mahavishnu, an actual meditation cut to tape - and simple solid length of career & collaborations - MCLAUHGHLIN stands far apart today from all others. Plus he actually carrie on Coltrane & hednrix ethos, furthest, and all by time of One Truth Band c ''78

Ok it has to be 5, but I can't leave this without mentioning Mick Taylor because of his cutting LP tones and ultimate blues solo on Mayall's "Marriage Madness". Also Buddy Whittington. I think it's got to be a perfect ten next time!

The jazz based guys are much more advanced than the rock guys. Joe Pass, George Benson, Pat Martino, Larry Carlton, and John McLaughlin. Then you have the true innovators versus everyone else. There are many, many others e.g. Tommy Emanuel, Doc Watson, Alan Holdsworth.. For rockers: Van Halen, SRV, Derek Trucks, Select Clapton, Hendrix. That’s a good start.

Ok the big winner here is Robben Ford - dear me Ford himself would not palce himself here in this company - Ford is a high quality Bay Area rock blues player & good as he is and blues lover that I am (thus I know ford from his 1973 recordings) the wrold aboslutley does not need more rock-blues.
Many ould choose Bloomfield & some Bishop, over Ford.
They & Harvey Madnel were the big news where Ford cut his teeth.
